Upgrade VCard now, or wait for June/July?

I'm thinking that it's time to retire my 280x as I suspect the damn thing's close to death, mostly from overuse, and that FFXIV started to lose nearly 10fps for the last month or so.

Another reason is that allegedly NVIDIA's 10xx series are releasing this June/July, and local prices of Vcards are actually starting to go down (which isn't saying much because they're kinda jacked up in price locally in the first place). The GTX 980 and AMD's 390x are much more affordable now, however I'm still town if I should wait and see if I should sit on my money and wait for the as of yet untested 10xx series, or go ahead and buy a 980 while prices and supplies last. Yes I'm migrating to NVIDIA as the 280x is seriously hot and eats a lot of power.

Any opinions?

If it were me I would get a high end current card that the prices are going down on that has been tested. More sure fire and cost friendly perhaps?

I'm more than willing to get the 980 if it's, and I hate using this term, "future proof." The 10xx series will likely be stupidly expensive when they hit here in the next few months, and it's likely that people will be snatching up the 980's when those cards hit, then prices will get jacked up again.

Yeah ... it's a tough thing regarding the timing to get a good deal on a nice piece of hardware, and often something comes along later resulting in a "If only I had waited!!!!!!" response.

Well the only reason I got the 280x 2 years ago was that it was only $250 locally for some reason, despite the fact that the Maxwell cards were supposed to be on the horizon. I've upgraded my case's other peripherals, most notably the PSU, which is the only reason I'm considering the 390x.

First world problems etc.

Well, sometimes for me I gather a lot of info and feedback to try and be better informed when that "moment of decision/inspiration" hits....

There are rare times when the "answer" becomes suddenly crystal clear while researching, though.

I don't know how it is for other people, but that is how I go about purchasing things that are related to comp tech in general.

Over all my only limitation is that I stick to 1080. 1440 monitors are horribly expensive right now where I live and my bad eyesight means I can't properly appreciate 1440, at least until I get work done on my eyes.

So for now the only thing important for me is that, for 2016 and the foreseeable future, is the best card I can get for sticking to 1080 gaming.

I'm looking at at upgrading my GPU as well, though not immediately.

I would suggest waiting at least till the end of the month, as AMD is supposed to have some kind of event at Macau concerning their new Polaris mid-range GPU. They've indicated that they would like to have VR available to a wider audience, which would point to Polaris being at least as fast as a GTX 970 of R9 380/390, at a lower price point.

But, yeah, timing is a b*tch. I always suffer from buyers remorse with these sort of things.

I have a GTX 750, and it's more than adequate for games like FF XIV or Witcher 3. I suspect if I had participated in large boss battles in XIV it might not have been able to keep up, but I cancelled my subscription long before I ever got that far.

If you're looking to spend $500+ on a GPU, according to Nvidia both the 1070 and 1080 will outperform a Titan X, which had MSRP for $999 a year ago. Pretty impressive if true. 1070 MSRP for $449 founders, $379 standard, but I doubt you'll be able to find one for that cheap.

Wait. Gtx 1070 is 90% percent the power of titan x for 370 USD. The current 970 is like 320 usd. The 1080 is 600 for power surpassing a titan x so that is a viable option as well.

Bought 970 by MSI since it was only 300 bucks. Will upgrade to current gen maybe next year when I upgrade my mobo.

Simple answer

Yes

Not so simple answer

PCI Express is both forward and backwards compatible, so you can put a PCIe 3.0 graphics card into a motherboard that has a PCIe 1.0 slot and it will still work (it also works the other ware around), however a high end graphics card is going to be bottlenecked by the hardware on that board (as in the processor) but in this case that is likely to be either minute or non existent.

Quick question guys, I've looked through the thread already but I just want to make sure.....

I currently have an MSI gaming m3 motherboard (forgot if it was an H or Z 170a) with a 970 mounted on it.

My mobo should still be compatible with the current gen GPUs with no issues right?

Also, I have an ATX case, does this mean I'm "future proof" as far as physical space in my PC case is concerned? I can't tell how large the current get video cards are from videos alone.

P.S. Sorry if I hijacked the thead a bit.
