To me, it looks like Knight of Sidonia vibe. Mumei finds that she has to fight her mirror image. The core of a colony resembles Mumei. They both have same haircut and red riding hood. The blood vines running down the core's face that resembles Mumei's face.


In this episode, Mumei is afraid to become a kabane. She could be become kabane if not drinking blood.
Ikoma saved her by miraculously preserve blood. He is more than just a steam engine mechanic and a hobbyist gunsmith. So, the online joke could be real. The joke is Ayame can provide Ikoma monthly supply without cutting her arm. The preview shows Ayame finally gets a chance to eat a bun. Both fan artists and Wit Studio make fun about her.

Both fan artists and Wit Studio also make fun about that boxing zombie. That zombie has a lot of chances to crush Mumei, but it choose to be in an viewing angle of being kicked.


The music composer's interview states both 'icon' and 'ninelie' have same melody, except icon lyric is English and ninelie lyric is Japanese.

Nice episode. I liked the part where mumei jumped, hit the core, the colony exploded and then she flew through the air and then ikoma caught her. All they needed to do now was end it with a kiss.

Hopefully NOW this will be the end of the back-and-forth between with everyone on the train regarding whether they should trust Kabaneris or not. That card has been played enough already. Anyway good episode, yeah there was a bit of contrivance how some playout (the rescue and pushing scene mainly), but wasn't enough to detract from the episode as whole.

This series is literally a videogame. Ikoma grinding every episode is leaving Mumei, the tutorial carry party member, in the dust.

They even getting item drops with Ikoma adding that bayonetta to his gun, and sword guy getting the kabane sword.
Mumei about to turn into a kabane under the rocks, so Ikoma shoved an HP potion into her mouth. Its even red.

The last part of the episode with the dude shooting the raid boss in the heart, and Mumei flying to get the final hit was literally a QTE sequence.

Hmmm, when you put that way, this wouldn't out place in a Uncharted game.

Ikoma catching Mumei, which resulted in a twirling motion, was straight out of a Disney movie. Loved it.

That said, I'm glad Mumei got her much needed character development, albeit it done in a rather short space of time (not that I'm complaining about it, though).

From the PV itself, it looks like there will be a (much needed) shift of tone from the despair and suffering, to more SOL and light-hearted stuff. Looking forward to it.

I think that Mumei catch, and she is a great catch, showed how much she changed this episode, if she were still the same person who valued her strength, she would have straight up kicked Ikoma in the face for attempted that. At least that's what I was half expecting.

That ripped body of Yukina! Damn, this episode is still great but I'm worried about Mumei's master committing atrocities like killing humans as seen from her flashback.

Spoiler for Episode 2-6:

So far I've been loving this show. There are some inconsistent things for sure when it comes to the logic behind intense situations, but Ikoma was such a really great main character I felt like I relate to his struggles. Mumei is best girl and despite her stark age/appearance contrast, she always stays there being a cutie doing a lot of badass things. Most of the characters were likeable and despite their harsh actions towards the two Kabaneris initially (for some like Kurusu at least) they got a lot better even if the redeem factor is in a slow progress.

I actually quite like the world building even there are such things that left a lot to be desired, particularly what happened outside of Japan. Bihou did a pretty good job crafting Edo era steampunk background details and everything can be seen clearly. I'm looking forward to see more of it.

I'm surprised WIT did keep the production values that are not only high-tier but also consistent which is quite a feat for them. The whole deal involving make-up animation for occasional closeup shots were fantastically made and the action bursts are decently animated too. I'm also glad to see Hiroyuki Sawano showcasing his true skills with his most memorable soundtrack in a while after his kind of disappointing last few musical works (see Aldnoah.Zero and Seraph of the End).

And finally, I did enjoy how the story was written, it's like a good balance of cool factor and casual camp with legit relatable characterization and top notch narrative without relying too much on expository dialogue and I feel excited to keep watching each time.

Hopefully I can only hope everything goes well and dandy.

The funny thing is that both, alongside Attack on Titan, were all directed by Tetsuro Araki; adding to the fact they play the same zombipocalypse aspect somehow differently each other.

So the Colony Kabane looks like one of her former team members. That sort of makes sense that Kabaneri turns into the heart of the Colony Kabane. The Colony Kabane does not care for neither humans or Kabane, which can be the same attitude of a Kabaneri.

Also, since Mumei stated that all her teammates are gone, that could mean that there are no more Kabaneri that she knows of; although, I suspect that there might be new ones she'll see later.

I'm surprised that the train was able to stop, load the canon, and commence a heavy duty rescue of Mumei at the same time without being attacked by a mob of Kabane. Well, time is sort of ambivalent in this series, so we'll just have to take it as it is.

As for why Mumei might really hate the Bushi... the guy did start to kill people indiscriminately in the flashback because the guy was paranoid, and it ended up murdering her mom.

Also, I'm guessing Mumei will probably lean on Ikoma more now, since he does seem more reliable now to her, and she probably does enjoy the emotional support he provides. Not much is known, but I guess a supply of blood is needed in order for Kabaneri not to turn into Kabane. Also, it looks like over-exertion can also cause them to turn to Kabane, with each one having a different limitation time.

Speaking of that, I'm interested why Ikoma doesn't seem to need a limiter like Mumei. Is it because the method they used to become Kabaneri was different?

The theory that Mumei is Ikoma's sister can finally be put to rest after this episode. That should have already been the case after Ikoma's flashback, but people still clung to it for some reason.

We got confirmation that Kabaneri can turn into Kabane if they go past their limits and don't drink blood, meaning Ikoma's recklessness might get toned down. He should have already kicked the bucket a long time ago.
