Shawn? Since when has Shinn ever been referred to as Shawn? Even the dub never went near that...and no need to call Athrun "Alex" seeing as he was referred to by that name in maybe 5 episodes not counting flashbacks... Oh, and Deacon, I second that motion....posting in all bold is irritating as hell... |

When Luna mentions Shawn, that was another pilot that was killed. I know the scene you are talking about. I believe the other 2 pilots were in GUAiZ units. That was during the battle where the Minerva was running in that trench and Rey was still onboard the ship before they got trapped.
Shinn has ALWAYS been referred to as Shinn, dub or otherwise. |

Alright, enough fuss and arguing in this thread, lets get back to a more serious review of the full subbed 'special':
Firstly, good job on your first fully subbed release ZC. Translation, timing video quality and all did the job quite nicely. Just don't let your divergence into the anime sub world take you off course from some of the kickass Manga releases we have been discussing recently ;P Now, onto the actual Special/Compilation film itself... Overall, it was fairly well done. While this is admittedly the better part of the show, everything flowed nicely, made sense, and the pace never actually felt too fast or too slow. I was saddened by the loss of episode 4 (one of the series better action episodes IMHO), but I can understand why it was dropped since it added nothing to the plot. The entire 'film' can be summed up into 4 different stories, all of which reach an approapriate peak by the conclusion: 1. How Athrun Zala went from being an Orb bodyguard to being a ZAFT pilot again. 2. How the peace between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT was finally shattered, and how the new war began. 3. How Shinn rose from being a pissed off trainee to a determined and passionate ZAFT ace pilot. 4. How Kira Yamato went from being a lost relic of the previous war to the ressurected warrior with convictions he once was. When viewed from this perspective, the film accomplishes exactly what it needs to and manages to do so in a way that the average viewer can follow if they pay attention to what's happening. Naturally, a number of other sub-plots from the show are still in the film, while a few are either dropped or simply missing. Stellar's previous characterization and interaction with Shinn seems to be gone, and Muurue and Talia never get to meet face to face... which could change the way things turn out later on, or simply leave a blatent plothole in the future specials, but oh well. I also can't say I care for the fact that most of Shinn's dialogue is about his hatred for Orb, but I can let this shift slip since they said Athrun would be the focus (giving us a more definitive main character now), and since the slightly altered sequence where Shinn and Kira meet is actually a bit more touching and dramatic now that it's the FIRST time we see what happened to his family. There are a lot of small reanimated sequences, many of which are on-par with the best of the stuff that the series produced, but none that are quite as mind-blowingly cool as the new animation in the first Zeta film or something like that. They all mesh in well though, and serve their purpose to enhance certain scenes a bit. It's nothing you absolutely MUST watch the film just to see, though. Any new scenes only serve as small modifications/extensions to already existing ones or placeholders to help move the plot along in place of an older cut event. Overall, the film offers virtually nothing new to those who have seen the series but it manages to work suprisingly well as a piece that can be viewed and fully understood independent of the series. Unlike the first SEED specials, new viewers can watch this without having seen the actual television show and probably understand most of what's happenening... ESPECIALLY if they've already seen Gundam SEED. We'll see if the next 3 pieces can help to salvage some of the unorganized messes that Destiny and it's staff fell into during the production of the show. |
