I'm not someone who always needs the main character to win, but damn, he lost on originality?
On the overall concept of originality based on him forming it organically? lol I can't understand a dish that multi-layered and created through natural cognitive inspiration to attempt to surpass fresher-fish is less original? I'm cool with Hayama getting the gold, but parts of bare-chested explanation didn't jive with me...Anyways, it was still good eats...

I don't think he lost on originality. What he lost on was that special something that distinguishes the dish as his and his alone. It's like eating a dish, and instantly that flavor makes you think of a certain person who made it. It's individuality and specialty of that person. So it's like McDonald's french fries. One bite, and you'll instantly know it was McDonald's. Souma did not have that sense in his dish, that distinguishes it to be his and his style alone, which people will instantly recognize when they take a bite. In a way, Megumi is ahead of Souma in this regards. When people eat Megumi's food, I'm pretty sure they know that it is her style and that it is unique.

You know, the more I see Soma lost the final duels (while promise to constantly better himself), the more I see Satoshi in him. You know, back then when earlier Pokemon aired, it was quite surprising for me to see an MC in a kids show who (repeatedly) lost in the final duel(s) like Satoshi. Yet, it can still send good messages to its child/young audience to "give it your all" and "never stop improving yourself". So far, Soma seem to posses less champion-titles on his belt compared to his chef-MC predecessors (Youichi Ajiyoshi, Liu Mao Xing, Azuma Kazuma, etc) IIRC. I wonder if the mangaka took some notes from Pokemon as the approach of Soma's journey .

He probably wants Souma to discover things by himself. Teaching him various techniques may be good, but learning why they should be used it more important. Having Souma face off against opponents and either stealing their skills or improving on his own failures works much better...or, at least it would, if it could net him a victory!
While Souma doesn't really deserve winning this one, the reason for his loss was very vague; you can't expect freshmen to come up with friggin' specialties. Anyway, the part I disliked the most was Souma's own moment of reflection on what his own cooking is; albeit a single panel, it had a lot more depth in the manga. |

I think the point of deciding the winner by a specialty is recounted in Hayama's flashback: to be able to offer everything they have as a chef and become uniquely recognized for that. Though I think it is a pretty difficult criteria to succeed in to ask seventeen-year old chefs to come up with a specialty that's a mark of their identity as a chef.

LOL They are 1st years in High School, so probably around 15 years old. The issue with specialty was that it was the deciding factor when taste was around the same level between the 3. All Souma had to do was make something that tasted even better, and he would have won by that.
Also, the premise in this anime is absurd. 1st years of around 1000 students will be weeded down to around 100 students by the 2nd year. Then after that, they will be weeded down to around 20 students or so by the end of the 3rd year. Still, though, I have LOL every time i look at the stadium. It looks like there are a few thousand students there.

As for Souma making the best dish, I highly doubt he could pull one over Ryou when it comes to fish dishes. |

I can actually understand why Hayama won, but what was unexpected for me was Souma losing. I was expecting him to win (thinking that this is a shounen series) that I didn't even notice that they're focusing on Hayama instead when they showed the flashback (also I was expecting similar flashbacks for Kurokiba and Souma but that never happened)
Looks like the next episode will show why Yukihira's going to France.
