It was some time ago that I read the few manga chapters of this series (3 or 4?), and yes - it is indeed quite a bit more "serious" than one might expect.
"Not in a good way" Black Bullet comparisons seem a bit off the mark in my opinion, but using the old "where there is smoke there is probably fire" analogy ... Yes. If I remember correctly this series has a very dark setting. I could easily see it getting quite gory and graphic. That being said the setting is also at the same time quite an interesting one, I thought. sort of a fantasy style setting (complete with monsters that regularly eat the abyss delvers) with technology from an advanced sci-fi'ish age being exceedingly rare, but found further and further one delves deeper. The orphanage the MC grows up in is also ... well, it is not a pleasant one. Still - gotta admit that it could turn into something good in the right hands. Will be keeping an eye out for it.

The base content is different of course (a dark semi fantasy/sci fi "lost civilization" setting as opposed to atechno occult/mahou shoujo'ish one), but there are general similarities in terms of the overall feel of the"sum result" the work produced on me. Maybe the adaptation choices of the Yume Tsukai series could be used as a general blueprint for adaptation choices shojkd the studio and staff decide not to go the strict/faithful route.... Hmm....I wonder if anyone else who has read the chapters had comparisons that struck them?
