Ohhh... I cringed at that back-cracking. The time difference at the lower layers are good for explaining why her mother might look younger than she appears if they meet again. And if the paper is a relic that she can't rip apart, it had to come from the lower layers.

I feel teased knowing that there's only a few episodes left and what's left to cover.

Lyza is a lioness. She reminds me of Gon's father from Hunter x Hunter.

The manga has not ended yet.

Ayup - Ozen has a rotten personality, but she is still one of my fave characters in this series. ^^

Even so, for her to say that the other White Whistles living down lower were scary people (and esp I think it was Bondrewd of the Dawn being particularly despicable) while she was "very kind" ... uwah.

I wish, wish, wish this would be a two cour (or even a split cour?) series ... but I am not getting my hopes up ... or rather, I refuse to do so and get disappointed! XD

Would still love to see it be so, though.

Also ... surviving on Abyss hippo meat for five days. -_-

I guess it is better than starvation?

So we should expect either an anime-original ending or it simply leaving us hanging? Given my experience with shows in a similar position (*cough* Claymore *cough*), that's not very reassuring.

Tough, but there's no way they can possibly reach the point the manga has in 3 episodes. Not without skipping a lot of details.

So during Ozen's flashbacks with Lyza after the one where Lyza introduces her husband and then it cuts to Ozen's face with black holes for eyes and mouth, was that supposed to be funny?

I thought it reflected how it was unexpected and she did not approve ... not necessarily funny.

Yeah, the impression I got was that exaggerated face represented how hollow it made Ozen feel to have some guy kind of usurp her as Lyza's number one companion.

If by 'leave us hanging' you mean a read the manga stinger or a second cour announcement then I would expect that.

Claymore was a decade ago, get over it.

42 or so manga chapters are translated on English and even more were publisherd in Japanese. Anime covereв 17 chapters for now. Most probably we'll just get an intermediate ending with either S2 announcment or "Read the manga, dudes".

I still feel this would be so much better if Riko and Reg were not kids. But i'm totally biased regarding it since i usually dislike such small children in stories like this one. It would be one of my favorites shows if we had more adult characters like Ouzen. The mistery of the abyss and the adventurous feel the anime has is really fantastic tho. We rarelly see stuff like that these days so i'm glad i gave it a chance despite having so much children in the cast.

Honestly, the abyss really intrigues me. Who created the relics? Some are so unreal like having the capacity of bringing corpses to life again or super advanced tech like Reg or even able to give special abilities to humans. Why is the fauna and flora so different there? Forget the animals, why even the physics are somehow distorted or those strange symptoms exist in the lower levels? So much potential to be explored. I'm really fan of this type of worlds. Too bad the manga is still in the beggining otherwise i would definitely read it.

In the beginning? The manga isn't near the beginning, some of those questions have been answered.

Either way, it's not finished either. For some reason i'm ok in following anime with one episode each weak but i can't stand doing it with manga. I only read it if the story is already finished xD

Episode 9:

Damn, the creatures at the third layer of the Abyss are dangerous as hell.

Got a real taste of fantasy adventure this episode as Riko and Reg got stuck in the stomach of a creature and had to fight their way out. I gotta give a lot of credit to Riko for fighting this episode with Reg being knocked out for the duration.

Quite a brave girl tbh considering the condition she's in. I think this episode really emphasized the theme of survival.

Stomach? Is... is this filler?

Edit: Okay, just checked Reddit and found this entry (considering the entire time they spent on the Third Layer in the Manga was a single 20-page chapter)

Quote:
As mentioned earlier in the author's twitter, this episode features new contents supplementing the events Riko and Reg faced in layer 3 which is briefly skimmed through in the manga. Such additional contents are: Reg usage of Incinerator on the purple flying beast that render him unconscious for 2 hours, Riko's small adventure that reminds her of how much Reg's contribution on their travel and safety, the 3rd layer curse Riko's inflicted, and Blaze Reap gained more spotlight than it has in the manga.

Riko's treatment towards the small critters as a decoy/food source might create dissonance with the audience, but I think it is necessary to showcase that Riko and Reg did learn something from Ozen: survival of the fittest.
[Mod Edit] On the one hand, I can understand this. On the other, I was kind of hoping they'd gloss over so we could get to certain events in the narrative.... The finale is supposed to be a 60 minute episode. Arriving at these certain events is ... not going to happen at this pace. What are the chances of Season 2?

I think it really emphasized that Riko should never be left by herself. Reg says stay right there and as soon as he passes out she drags him off on her attempt to commit suicide.

True, but we needed to see an episode where Riko was self-reliant and not dependent on Reg. Yes, their partnership is based on her knowledge and his brawn, but the last couple episodes cast Riko more in the damsel-in-distress mode.

Still when Reg passed out I was screaming in my head at Riko just to stay there. Not surprised she didn't though. I was especially impressed with how she dragged Reg around. Ozen did observe he was lighter than she expected, but still, Riko probably weighs 25 kg or so. No matter what he's made of, Reg has to be at least half that heavy.
