Question for anyone who's read this. Do you need to have watched Record of Lodoss War to understand this? Or does it work as a standalone?

Its a stand alone.

I've read what's been scanlated for the manga and I've been enjoying it a lot. It truly has that old school epic fantasy setting and with fairly interesting characters and plot progression.

My only gripe so far is that the anime character art kind of mellows out the look of the female lead. She's definitely way more of a Erina (shoukugeki) type and it doesn't really show at all in the anime art.

The only thing I don't like is this servant talk. Unless one of these characters (no idea who serves who) is going to build a kingdom, it just gives me weird vibes.
