If the rear is a city then they can be healed behind before healed (remember there's healing magic here) and resent to the front

And a line of defense without walls is not gonna last even hours let alone days.

The abilities use stamina and each has some limitations, while the ones that are most easily used are on the level of normal magic. As for the mind control, we still don't know the limitations, though I would doubt it can be used in the heat of battle (more something like several minutes needed to achieve success) and he decided to avoid it (for now) because of ethical reasons.

To siege, the attacker needs to make a lot of preparations, like supplies and siege equipment
Skirmishing army can't easily switch to siege

Depending on the purpose, the line doesn't have to last long

Skirmishes don't last long and don't mass produce wounded. Sieges don't allow transportation of wounded, so neither would fit.

Speaking of which, any tips for other series of similar genre? Lately, I can't find any good non-comedy series, especially if the MC is to be strong but not omnipotent.

On strategic level, when the entire region is considered as 1 battlefied, the frontline might refer to large area near the border. So it's not strictly 1 battle.

^ I guess there should be some minimal limit to that, otherwise they couldn't use magic at all, there is always some minimal amount of metals in the ground and if we go even more minimalistic, the human body (and of course all clothes and such) contain some too. And scattering a significant amount of metal dust might straight up kill him anyway.
