Most surely, either the author or the editor tried to capitalize Claire's supposed popularity to try to sell more LNs.
Look at Sakura or any other potential haremettes. Has any of them had as much screentime as Claire & Emilia?

More like the author focused so much on Claire because she was from the start intended to be Emilia’s main competition for Hayato. You need to give the competition focus or you have Mirage in Macross Delta. Sakura and the other girls didn’t even show up until later, and the romance always felt to me more like it was about a love triangle between Hayato, Emilia, and Claire rather than an actual harem because Emilia and Claire always got the main focus. But still with harem hijinks on the side.

Okay, but....why did there need to be a love triangle? It's a story about teenagers fighting space bugs in super armor and spandex. If you have to put in relationship drama, at least take advantage of the fantasy setting and just have him be with both.

It's not like Claire needed it to stay relevant to the story, either, given her siblings are heavily connected to the main plot and she's Hayato's and Emilia's boss.

My hunch tell me that is Claire's son. (Hayato not a father)

It really similar the scene when Hayato and Claire fighting in volume 1.

After that, there's a conference where CHarlotte speaks about what happened in the last fight and the Savages. Then, Claire gives her own version of what happened and then says that the reaction values of her Hundred were very low and as such, she's retiring as a Slayer but that she'll continue to work to improve the relationships between the Earth and Planet Notre Dame. Everyone claps and all kind of people shed tears becausae of that. After that, it was Hayato's turn to say something but Emilia wanted to go first as she had something important to say, which is, "It looks like I'm having a baby" Everyone was looking at Hayato who was even more surprised than them. The announcement of Claire was completely blown off by the confession of Emilia. Claire and Erika are stupefied, and Karen with Sakura just want to transform that future boy/girl in an Idol. And well, both Hayato and Emilia are retiring as Slayers too, seeing that the world was saved.
