it's ok.. the revelation moment is still saved for the last arc I like how they switched up Sword Maiden Arc first... simply because the upcoming arc is perfect for climax This arc's most high point is when they fought Goblin Champion.. after that, everything is toned down About Sword Maiden... her encounter with Goblin happened BEFORE she joined Demon King raid.. I believe it is implied strongly in manga that she recovered her mental break to fight Demon King... however she didn't recover from her trauma at all, which is why she is "aroused" ![]() maaann... that anvil body of High Elf Archer... ![]() ![]() about this episode, it feels short but I like how Goblin Slayer started to open up about his inner fear I even surprised that they revealed his Goblin master... in manga, it is only implied but we never see the master's face directly Fighting without fire, water, and poison is strong handicap ![]() ![]() and isn't it awesome that his canary still in healthy condition after the battle? |

Not really. Thermobaric bombs use liquified combustible gas mixed with air and are problematic weapons at the best of times. A flour-dust explosion can be made to happen but doing it deliberately is difficult. The big problem is when it happens accidentally in a flour mill or other material processing plant which is why precautions are taken to prevent it. In a lot of cases deliberately trying to set off a flour "bomb" will result at best in a fizzle with only some of the flour burning and no noticeable explosion. It makes for a good "movie physics" gimmick though.

I'm really disappointed how the siege was done. You can tell they struggled a lot with storyboard to make it not too intense for the animation team considering the absurd number of close pan cuts. In fact you -never- see goblins swarming the place, and they pretty much shortened GS actions to deal with Goblins who were using the barricades too. Lizard Priest efforts were also dumbed down a bit, since he was using his weapon instead of removing the mirror with his bare hands.
Also, there were 2 inconsistencies: Priestess says she has "1" miracle left, but that doesn't make sense since in the anime, they attacked the eyeball once, not twice. So in the anime, she used only 1 miracle, Protection (while in the LN and manga, she used once but got dispelled, and then once for the explosion). Meanwhile, GS asked Lizard Priest to have the Dragontooth warrior protect Priestess with a shield, but they didn't even bother giving him a shield in the anime. That said, they properly adapted the sober mood between GS and Sword Maiden, although I wish they didn't put so much emphasis on her lips. And thankfully, they kept intact the little party banters at the end.

I have mixed feelings about the fighting for episode 9. Felt weaker and less impactful compared to some of the earlier episodes (especially the Ogre one).
Also got to find out more about Sword Maiden's which was no doubt tragic. I'm not too invested into Goblin Slayer's character at this point though. What he said about "slaying goblins" is exactly how I see him as up to this point in the anime.

i think the shield part was a mistranslation. it was probably "have it act as a shield." but i do agree they dumbed down the fight a bit. there was a lot of prep work by GS to have weapons everywhere. and also the overwhelming swarm was left out, so much so that bringing down the ceiling was the only option of winning. lizard priest also got short changed. tearing down the mirror off the wall with his bare hands and his line, "how can i not do my best if she is!" referring to priestess also trying with all her strength to move the mirror.
i loved the conversation GS had with SM. in her short time in the story, the author managed to write her one of the more, if not most, complete story in terms of development.

No, it isn't a mistranslation. The anime line is like this: 「盾を持たせて、あの娘を守らせろ」which literally means "let it hold a shield and make it protect that girl". That's why in both the manga and LN, it carries a shield so it can protect Priestess (and HEA) from arrows.

Basically, Sword Maiden knew that case wasn't because of Goblins but because of the cult that conspired with the demon lord (that sect that was obliterated by Hero in episode 6). However, she couldn't bring herself to say the truth because she wanted people to understand her fears: if the troubles were caused by goblins, surely she believed everyone else would be more aware about what kind of threat they are. So she didn't disclose why women were being ripped alive in Water Town. They were living sacrifice for the demon lord and they were about to unleash a goblin army from the sewers, hence why they were equipped.
But in the end, it didn't change anything. It is always "someone else's problem". That's why she hoped for Goblin slayer to understand her plight because she believed he would know as "the goblin slayer". However, GS bluntly says he can't. That's natural because GS -saw- what goblins can do, but wasn't a -victim- compared to SM. That's why he cannot understand her feelings (why being afraid instead of slaughtering all?) and that's why he "cannot save her".

Considering it was the climax of the arc, it was indeed underwhelming. I expected a more intense battle than that. Hopefully that battle from the end of the first LN that has been moved around and that everyone is hyping up will be better.
I liked how everything fit together. The Hero defeating that commander at the beginning of the arc, the alligator, and Sword Maiden. So basically, that Demon King commander opened the mirror gate, taught the Goblins many things, and had them invade the sewers of the city. Sword Maiden knew about it all along but she was too afraid to do something about it herself given her past trauma and she was ashamed to ask adventurers for help with simple Goblins. She asked Goblin Slayer because she thought he would understand her. She also concealed the true nature of the murders so people would think it was the work of Goblins and understand how terrifying they truly are. I'm puzzled about one thing, though. How come the Goblins apparently stayed put inside the sewers? Because they no longer had anybody to order them around? You'd think their instinct would take over and they would venture into the city looking for food and women to rape though.

^ Because the loss of their "general" was really recent, and they were still waiting for more troops from the mirror gate. Goblins were still crafting more boats from the other side. They were preparing for a very large siege against Water Town, and the Goblin Champion made sure they were prepared before zergrushing the town.

That was pretty underwhelming for the final fight of this arc. It was probably the most disappointing fight so far. At least the scene with Goblin Slayer and Sword Maiden was done well.
Goblin Slayer went through all that trouble to keep his promise and High Elf Archer's response is to kick him off a cliff. Talk about ungrateful ![]()
