I think the artists computer crashed or something and he lost all his illustrations. I believe that is the hold up.

I finally read translated Vol 11 and 12 now that they are available. The volumes are so lewd that I can't believe they actually received LN publication. The girls are beyond help now, they have become sex addicts.

Actually, shinmaimaoutranslation has put up all the translation for volume 11 and 12 on their site. This is both because their running out of stuff to translate for the series and because of a lot of other annoying reasons like other people trying round-about ways to read them. There really long but really enjoyable.
Volume 12 is especially hot and the illustrations are prefect. Its not the kind of story you can put into a anime or a manga. It would have to be a hentai or a doujin, something I bet we all really wish would happen someday.

I think the second season ends at volume 7. But I think they did an OVA for a small part of volume 8. Not 100% sure though.

So its safe to read the light novel from volume 7 after watching the 2 anime seasons or your not sure it's volume 7 is where i should pick up the story

No, volume 7 was part of the 2nd season of the anime, mainly the end. However, if you want the full details they didn't or couldn't include in the anime, your free to read it.

Just read the whole series. Anime always omits or changes details. Reading from the beginning will allow you to understand much more about what it happening

^I second it. This is one of the very, very few series that I read from start to finish a few times. Not many series got me hooked enough to reread the whole thing.

And is there any news about the next volume—the one about Jim rescuing Basra’s mum in heaven? Last I heard, the author lost the data. Did he give up? Or still rewriting the whole thing?

Yeah, it could be. He abandoned Hagure Yuusha when he started working on Shinmai and now the author is working on his new project. So yeah this could have the same fate as Hagure Yuusha
