The movie sounds okay. It's obviously an alternative story so it doesn't fuck over the established canon. AO on the other hand was supposed to be a sequel and literally shat on the established canon. That's much worse.
Someone detailed the movie a lot more, sounds similar for the most part but perhaps less depressing than the blunt spoilers earlier.
Spoiler:
Quote:
I watched it.
I liked it. I liked it more than Hi-Evo 1, and AO, and Pocket Full of Rainbows.
I actually also enjoyed it more than the majority of the original TV series, which I feel is loved mostly because it had a good final part even though a lot of the early/mid parts of it were kind of dull and mediocre, but that's just my opinion.
First of all:
90% of the movie is completely new animation which looks fantastic. There's a bit of reused animation, but it's mostly battle scenes that still look really great. The transition to 4:3 is kind of jarring, though, and a lot of Anemone's expressions in the reused footage really don't match the new version of her character.
The preview from the end of Hi-Evo 1 was a load of nonsense and has nothing to do with this.
In fact you can skip Hi-Evo 1 completely because it seems to have nothing to do with this at all.
Charles and Ray are alive.
It DOES pull some weird bullshit at the end but it wasn't THAT bad.
The spoilers in the other thread left out or were wrong about the majority of things.
I'm typing up full spoilers, will be posting them here.
Movie starts with Anemone as a child. Recounts her way of sneaking out of a base, and how she regretted telling "that lie" to her father the last time she saw him. There's a slight rewind establishing her character: Anemone is a half-Japanese girl, full name Ishii Fuuka Anemone, raised by her single father, UN/SDF military guy Ken (he's UN but has an SDF rank; SDF is part of the UN in this universe?). Her mother died some time ago. They live on military property near Mt Fuji in a massive danchi-like complex. There's montage shown through photos on her totally-not-iPhone showing that he was a pretty good dad and they got along well. The sequence ends with Anemone seeing her father off before a big operation; She's mad because he's missing something he promised her and she says she hates him. He installs the "Dominic" app- A Siri/Alexa-like companion AI thing- on her phone and leaves.
The movie jumps seven years to 2028. Anemone, now 14, is work for the UN's ASSID- Anti-Scub Stategic Infantry Division, and they're heading to Tokyo, where Ken died, to fight the seventh Eureka, or Eureka Seven. Six Eurekas have already ravaged most of the world, destroying 73 countries and killing 2.6 billion people. (It's unclear what the difference, if there is any, between "Eureka" and "scub" is.) UN forces engage the Eureka Seven, which spits out a Nirvash, which for the first time in history takes on a humanoid form, its "final evolution". Anemone consults her Dominic app on what to do, and based on its advice ASSID ends up using an old device in Tokyo bay to let Anemone "dive" into Eureka Seven, which is explained as her taking the body of an "avatar" inside the "world" inside the Eureka, which at first sounds like she's doing some VR stuff to hack into a computer. She finds herself inside an entirely different world piloting a robot. Dominic suddenly appears as a human inside the robot's cockpit and starts giving her orders, telling her to attack another robot that's shining, because Ken gave his life to place a tracker on the source of all their problems. The shining robot is the Nirvash. Anemone destroys it but sees a girl (Eureka) crying and calling a name, "Renton", fall out of it before exiting the dive. She returns to the real world and a portion of the Eureka is destroyed: This is mankind's first victory in 14 years.
ASSID and Anemone continue to use the device to destroy parts of Eureka Seven bit by bit, seeing the green-haired girl each time. Unbeknownst to her (but known to her superior Mischa, as well as ASSID HQ scientist Dr Bear), the device was what was used in the failed operation seven years ago that her father was killed in. ASSID's successes start to draw attention, which results in the UN using her for propaganda (doing photo shoots with the idol costume seen in Hi-Evo 1), and things like asshole politicians screaming about how it's all a conspiracy, and journalists harassing her. Dr Bear eventually decides to tell Anemone about how there were six teenage girls before her who succeeded in diving into the Eurekas, the Super Six, but that in the end they never came back, and the dives were failures that resulted in the scub coming through to this world. He also takes her to see Dewey Novac, a man who was found next to Eureka Seven, and seems to be from the world inside it: Half of his legs fade to nothing, not even existing in this world. Despite being detained deep underground, He seems to know of Anemone, calling her the seventh sacrifice, and says that the worlds they are seeing are actually innumerable mistakes that have been discarded by a false god, or child of a god, and that all they're doing is cleaning up garbage. When asked about the name Renton, he recognises it as the name of his mentor's son, but says that Renton is dead. He predicts the coming of a new age.
Anemone starts to get frustrated with how the Dominic on her phone is dumb (it's basically the same as a real-life Siri going "I didn't understand that" all the time) even though the one accompanying her on dives is no different from a human, but after questioning her's she eventually finds out that her's has been cut off each time and has never dived alongside her. Also the Dominic app comes in pairs, as it was made for her father to be able to look after her remotely. On the next dive she confronts the Dominic there, but her being distracted causes the fight to go wrong and he tosses her back through the gate to the real world while fighting off the coralians. Her Dominic app stops working.
(This is where it starts to get weird)
The dives continue until Eureka Seven's core is exposed, and the final showdown begins. When Anemone dives though, the green-haired girl confronts her and screws with her showing her Ken's, frozen in time five seconds before his death in a massive explosion. She offers to make a world where Ken is alive, but Anemone leaves. When she's alone Eureka starts crying and it turns out that she's been making countless worlds trying to get one where Renton is alive. The last part of Eureka Seven is destroyed, but then a new reading appears, and a pillar of light manifests turning everything in the vicinity to salt. When the light dissipates it reveals a gigantic plant-tentacle-coral-snake-dragon-monster that starts destroying everything. Anemone cries saying that she can't choose, and calls out the magic words (never audible) her father had told her to say when she needs him. Suddenly a door opens in the real world and Dominic comes out. Anemone had suspected that he was actually her father, but he denies this, saying that Ken had entrusted him with looking out for her. He brings her back to the vision of Ken dying, but this time shows her that in his last moments Ken was looking at a photo of her and smiling. He then calls "Gulliver", and a bigger door appears and Gulliver The End, a giant robot resembling an animal-esque The End appears. Anemone wants to go talk to Eureka again and Dominic says that she's inside the monster. They get into Gulliver and fly at the monster, dodging its attacks, and Gulliver bites into its neck. Dominic opens a door into the world inside it and Anemone goes through.
One more thing I forgot to put in my first post: The CG is only used for sequences with child Anemone, child Eureka, and Ken. It's not used for robots/robot action.
Oh right, forgot to mention: When the monster appears, Dr Bear is with Dewey and asks him what is going on. Dewey reveals that the world he was from no longer exists, and that the Eureka world is not his world. Dewey then breaks free of his restraints, revealing that he could have done so any time. His legs are also completely manifested, and the removing of his blindfold reveals that the whites of his eyes are black (though they turn white immediately after), and he shatters the glass to his enclosure outwards which may or may not have killed Dr Bear (he's shown being blown backwards with shards of glass flying into him but that's it).
Anemone finds herself in the danchi housing complex's playground with Eureka. She turns down Eureka's offer, saying that it would be trodding on the deaths of everyone who had died for mankind to make it this far, including Ken's. Eureka asks Anemone to kill her then, because she no longer has the power to make a new world. All of this happened because when she touched the silver box she lost control of her power and her right arm, growing out of control, killed Renton, and she's been trying to bring him back ever since. All of the worlds were dreams, that ended in failure (a montage of countless scenes each lasting an instant flashes by, which includes the TV series, Pocket Full of Rainbows, AO, and even a panel from the manga). But Anemone refuses, and says that she's here to save Eureka, because they're alike, and says that she'll stay by her side, and convinces her to leave with her.
Suddenly a door in the danchi pops open and a giant Gulliver (the animal, not the robot) jumps out. Then all the doors pop open and giant Gullivers come out of all of them and start eating the world, starting the Gulliver apocalypse. They come after Anemone and Eureka too, who run away. Eureka says that she doesn't know how to leave this world, but Anemone does, and they follow the same path that Anemone recounted at the beginning of the movie, chased by Gullivers all the way. (This world is based on Anemone's perception, and in the flashback sequences she's shown to be a fan of a children's book which has Gulliver in it and to have a stuffed Gulliver so this technically isn't as dumb as it looks). In the real world, the monster vanishes, and a giant egg instead appears. Dewey is outside looking at it, and says that now that the child of god has been swallowed by the power of god, and abandoned the use of the power, it has to be distributed fairly, and if the child will not use the power, "we" will.
In addition to the egg, many other things start to appear in the real world, including the Gekko-gou and Gekkostate members, and Charles and Ray, all looking confused. The six girls of the Super Six also appear, unconcious, naked, and covered in green goo next to a black robot (unsure, The End?). Anemone and Eureka appear in the real world lying on their backs looking up at a blue sky, and laugh. Anemone also says that she has a feeling that Renton might actually be alive. When Anemone sits up, though, she's surprised by something off-screen. Eureka looks at it too. It's the giant egg, partially cracked with something inside it. Eureka runs towards it and Anemone follows, passing by a human Dominic and a single giant Gulliver. The thing inside cracks the egg open and reveals itself to be a giant Nirvash with Hygogg-like stretchy arms. Nirvash roars and the green crystal on its chest lights up, and Eureka's name appears on it. Eureka realises that someone is calling for her. The camera zooms off of Earth and to somewhere else, where Renton is standing on the edge of a cliff holding a glowing Konpaku Drive and calling Eureka's name.
The end. There's nothing during or after the credits. I wasn't entirely sure what precisely was in the "worlds Eureka dreamt" montage because stuff flashes by really fast but Rainbow and AO were in the credits so they're definite.
tl;dr
Pocket Full of Rainbows and AO never happened so you can stop complaining about them now.
All of this happened because when she touched the silver box she lost control of her power and her right arm, growing out of control, killed Renton, and she's been trying to bring him back ever since. Because the original series DID have a happy ending.
The story takes place 10 years after the events of Anemone. Following Eureka's actions in that movie, the people native to Earth and those she brought over from the 'virtual' world (like the Gekkostate crew and the Beams) are at odds with each other, while Eureka must take care of a girl named Iris who looks similar to her and has the ability to manipulate scab corals. Renton's status in all this is left unsaid so far...
Character profiles include an older Holland, Talho, Charles and Ray Beams, Dewey (now voiced by Koichi Yamadera following the passing of Kouji Tsujitani and Keiji Fujiwara). Also confirmed to return in the cast list are Moondoggie, Gidget and Woz after barely appearing in the past 2 movies.
Well, I did like Anemone, and this looks like it takes place in the same world and timeline. I can even see an older Anemone in the trailer. So that's good. Also, I don't mind the lack of Renton. The original show focused mainly on him already. I like it that these movies focus on other characters.
That been said, I do hope Eureka and Renton can finally reunite for real at the end of this movie. That would be a good enough ending for the franchise in my book.

... what happened to this franchise...
I feel like they've really missed the point of this series and haven't learned anything from Ao.
This is quite something though. It seems I would have to go through most of the series to see if they were trying to lead up to something in Hi-Evolution 3. After Pocket Full of Rainbow Eureka Seven and the Eureka Seven games, I was getting used to stories branching off to other characters. and accepting alternate universes. I do question how they did Hi-Evolution 2 in terms of making them canon but as "dreams" as in Eureka wiped out the universes from most of the series. I'm talking about this with limited understanding since it has been a while, since I watched most of the series. And even though Renton wasn't playing a role as much, I expect him in some fashion to appear in Hi-Evolution 3. Otherwise, it would feel a bit left out if I don't know what the reason is, for leaving him out. The only way I know is to watch it when it comes out.
I finally got time to watch the final movie. I liked it quite a bit. It's not bad. I think AO was way worse as a sequel than these movies, to be honest. These movies focus on characters we care about like Eureka and Anemone instead of literal whos like Ao. And I liked how the multiverse concept was integrated into these movies. The concept of parallel worlds was always part of Eureka Seven, but I feel these movies are the first work that actually take advantage of this to set up the conflicts.
If this is the ending of the franchise, I think it's good enough.
