Anime only viewer here. Most of all, I've never been happier about avoiding spoilers! This was an awesome twist.
At no point did I think it was an asspull, just because of how perfectly things clicked into place. Even if it was, I don't mind as long as there are no obvious plot holes. One potential plot hole would be if Eren has seen the future, and if that were to act as a justification for his actions in this season. Because it never seemed to affect him in previous seasons. But I actually believe that Eren is just being Eren. And he's not seeing the future, because that requires there being another Attack Titan in the future - and Eren will be the last one

The power to see the future works... inconsistently. It's clear that Grisha only saw some fragments of the future but not all of them, that's how he was able to see Zeke and Eren, and it's not like he was actually able to see them, he was just seeing the "memory" of future Eren. But he didn't see them at every single point of their journey.
At any rate there is a specific point where it was hinted that Eren saw something through the power of titans that completely changed his views on the world's situation and determined his current agenda. This is the point where Eren (who possess the coordinate) touched Historia (A Royal family member), and it's quite clear from his face that he didn't just realize that he could use the founding titan power by touching a royal family member, he saw something, something terrifying. Of course it could have just been the past, but I believe he saw the future as well.

Memories of the Future
A game changer that was established and foreshadowed in the third season, and yet it never ceased to amaze manga readers once disclosed.
So, to take that Eren orchestrated the Reiss Family's slaughter by influencing and urging his father to go forward and carry on with the massacre, and then his younger self accessing those memories once coming into contact with Historia at the ceremony. Who knows what else did Eren witness within the Paths that made Grisha to lost his sanity? Grisha, a tormented man whose beliefs brought misery to his first family, and he's reaping the consequences of his inaction. I mean Grisha's mental breakdown wasn't expanded at every minute detail from what I recalled from the manga in contrast to the anime. Again, credit goes to Isayama-sensei whom I hopefully believed served as consultant for the animation staff in order to further elaborate upon Grisha's last tragic hours and mental state. I'm just glad to see that episodes like this result in rising the narrative quality that AOT held in its previous three seasons. Now, without spoiling the fun in the next episode a detail that was foreshadowed in the second season's ending is going to be both disclosed and explained, at last. If the anime staff is faithfully adapting the manga timeline in order. |

The best is behind us now. It's all downhill from there. And no, it's not a spoiler to say that because people can't possibly know why I dislike the rest of the story unless they've been reading the manga thread. Quite a few people liked it, though I wouldn't be able to tell if it was a majority or minority.

From You, 2,000 Years Ago
This episode can be thought of a throwback call to first season's first episode and thus completing the circle.
And, the girl Ymir lived through the worst having her village and family razed by the invading Eldians and much worse.... Still, things in human nature that continue to remain unchanged with the course of time and have been expressively shown over and over in each of the seasons. In order to avoid reprisals, people tend to delegate guilt collectively upon the most unfortunate or weak, and thus washing off whatever skeletons might be concealing in their respective closet. The downside is that eventually it will bite back at them whether be the current generation or future generations reaping the penalty. Quote:

What was marvelous about the 81st episode for me was the surviving 104th generation recruits taking the reins to slaughter all the non-colossal Titans while Barrricades OST background musical theme, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, played.
It was a beautiful throwback from back to the Battle of Trost from the first season. The visual display of OMG complemented by Sawano's musical style, and those itano performances by Mikasa, Armin, Jean, and Connie made the stand for Shinganshina all the more memorable, at least to me. Ok, Eren turned the tables on Zeke, and Yelena looks on defeat as Floch is arresting her. Nevertheless, will Armin and company sit idly and letting Eren literally stomp his way to the rest of the world in order to save Paradis? Or is there anybody else in Paradis thinking the opposite? The outlook seems grim for the rest of the world. Just as grim but at the same time rejoicing witnessing... Spoiler:

I didn't recognize Hitch. She looks like a completely different character with this artstyle. Annie's backstory was pretty weird. Her father abused her her whole life and she hated him enough to give him a permanent injury once she got stronger than him, but he cries a bit and then she loves him? Well, I guess it's not that different from what happened to Zeke. Or Reiner. Their backstories feel like they're all the same.

Sunset
It didn't feel as if events were slowing down after Eren undone the Walls, and Annie thawing out from her crystal coccoon.
The tension was preserved as we witnessed a most instense and heated argument in between Armin and Mikasa regarding their priorities upon the current climate. Eren has literally gone "south", and nobody of our main characters seem able to hold themselves together while struggling within themselves and amongst themselves where their priorities lie. Except for Connie that he knows what he intends to do with Falco, forcing Armin to put aside Eren from his thoughts momentarily in order to give chase. On the other hand, Floch's getting high and mighty at purging the Island from dissident agents while Eren is literally on his march to do the same with the rest of the world. Jean is left confused and flabbergasted whether to take on Floch's offer to give-up fighting and secure that comfortable lifestyle his teen self once dreamt. Quote:
If I may add a little but slight difference was that Annie, at least, paid her father back all the abuse of her own choice literally. |

Gabi and Reiner: "there were never any devils on that island"
Yeeeeeeeah, about that. As we're seeing now, the Yaegerists are not only supporting but celebrating genocide on an unprecedented scale. I'd say those people count as devils.

Versus what? The world that wanted to commit genocide on the island? There really is no "right" side to this story. At least you can sort of understand Eren trying to protect those he loves against the ones trying to commit genocide against him and his loved ones the whole time even before the story even began (as in the world has been trying to commit genocide on the island and the Eldians for quite some time now), although he is going a bit overboard.

Can anyone explain to me the logic behind Levi helping the Marleyan forces just because he wants Zeke to die?
Like, Zeke's euthanasia plan is no more and his body is now overtaken by Eren who threw the Euthanasia plan outta the window to defend the Paradis Eldians. Zeke is now pretty much gone or paralized under Eren. Previously, Levi fought Zeke so hard & determined coz Levi doesn't want Zeke to screw the Paradis people. So.....what does Levi hope to accomplish by stopping Eren now? Does he suddenly just want to save the rest of the world? After stopping/killing Eren then what? He'll just sit there waiting for Marleyans to come to commit genocide on Paradis people?

Killing the Beast Titan is literally the last order Erwin gave to him. As a Ackerman, he was conditioned to obey. But also as a veteran of a now defunct corp, he have to avenge everyone who died because of Zeke.

Can't Levi think for himself about the outcome of helping Marleyans stopping/killing Eren? Heck, I'm surprised Hange even support this plan. I mean, those two are among the smartest Paradisians. Do they seriously not think of the repercussion of (fatally?) stopping Eren and helping Marleyans in their genocidal masterplan for Paradis Eldians?
