That's only logical. The chroniclers were usually paid by the King himself and since homosexuality tended to be taken as a sin/crime/unethical, there is no reason for the King to brag about it. Of course, other countries could use it, but the information spread was terrible (so they might not even know), and it is also not really something much to write about. At most, it would be mentioned as one of dozens of "misdeeds" he did if the two countries really hated each other, but such information is hardly reliable.

Though in the end, the main point stands. The King/Queen is expected to have a child and to do that Anis would need a male husband.

Al is still around, so I'll bet on a full pardon when Anis takes the throne and the throne passed to Al's progeny or something.

We only series where the lesbian couple had actiual science babies which I know was Kyokai Senjo no Horizon and anime did not get to this part.

The upcoming I'm In Love with Villianess will have a more mundane solution.

I thought this was an objectively bad episode.

It felt like they were screaming through what I can only guess should have been 2-3 episodes worth of content, leaving almost every narrative thread unfinished or summarized. They were very obviously racing through these parts of plot to introduce this Lumi character, who also feels like she's from a completely different series because we have never seen spirits manifest as spheres of light before.

Dialogues constantly felt like they were left hanging open. They zipped through one narrative with the hope than inferences in the next would close out the previous ones. Nothing felt like it had any time to breathe and not in a way that felt dense, just rushed.

The thing about this series is that there were a lot of infodumps about spirits, magic, magicology, and how everything works together in the source from chapter 1 -- which the anime just sort of skimmed over.

It was definitely fast-paced but it didn't feel rushed to me. They made it easy to understand the state of mind of each of the characters. Anis has resolved herself to becoming Queen out of guilt for what happened to Algard, and she believes that entails giving up everything: her carefree lifestyle, her magic research, love, etc... She's killing her own individuality in order to become an acceptable Queen for the nobles. This made Ilia and Lainie sad. This made Tilty utterly pissed off. As for Euphie, she didn't immediately realize Anis was giving up everything, and she is torn between upholding her duty as a noble and wanting Anis to remain free even if it means she has to rebel. The new character is apparently there to offer her the choice to give up her own freedom for Anis.

So yeah, I thought they did a good job.

The show could have used some setup hints or foreshadowing in the earlier episodes, so that all this stuff doesn't feel so much like it's coming out of nowhere. Finding out the source material actually provides that kind of opportunity makes me wonder why they chose to leave it out.

It's not a deal-breaker, though. Just an oddity. I try not to second-guess people who are adapting stuff for the screen. It's a really hard thing to do.

Unsurpringly, they trimmed the fat here, and I can't say I'm too bored by that, since it is one of the dullest part of Volume 3. Of course, there is still some interesting stuff out there, but it really affected the pacing, so the anime made a more digest version, although some unfortunate cut still happened.

The discussion between Anis, her parents and Grantz was of course skipped. In the LN, it doesn't really cover the whole discussion, but it pretty much narrates the King's decision, although he does ask Anis if she is fine with that. Anis is resigned and bluntly admits she doesn't like that but she has no choice but to accept his decision. Grantz will prepare the arrangements for the formal announcement but is also fine Euphie stays by her side anyway.

Anis explains the situation to Euphie, Ilia and Lainie. It is worth noting that Anis had been recuperating from using the Dragon seal for the past few months. Even if she could move after a week, she was advised to have proper rest while her health was monitored.
The discussion is pretty similar, although the narration points out that while Anis considered adopting a child from a powerful noble family, she gave up on that idea as the king would most likely be against that idea. Not to mention that, because of Chartreuse's plot, giving an opportunity to a noble family to get a hold on the throne could lead to conspiracies and whatnot.
Additionally, it is stated that the King wanted to push changes gradually over time, which is the reason why he let Anis continue her magicology studies instead of forbidding her. Considering the situation, the King decided that they have no choice but bring change in a rather abrupt way, even at the risk of nobles not taking a liking to Anis' ascension to the throne.
When Anis leaves the room, her monologue is about her reminiscing her past deeds, trying to convince herself that it is fine now, so the nobles will have to accept her.

The discussion with Tilty, Euphie and Lainie was a bit longer and more confronting. After Euphie claims she has to support Anis as one of her subjects, Tilty gets visibly irritated and asks Euphie if the latter wants to repeat her mistakes she made with Algard. Lainie managed to defuse a bit the situation. Following this, Tilty and Euphie pretty much answer Lainie's questions regarding Anis' situation such as what would happen if she refuses, why no one else could be a legitimate successor etc.
Some additional information is discussed regarding the issue with the nobles: The aristocracy put so much importance on their bloodlines that it was actually forbidden for them to mix their blood with commoners, so even eloping with one of them was deemed illegal. This is why the revolt was particularly intense during Anis' grandfather reign, where the kingdom was actually on the verge of collapse. And it is during that period that Grantz and Sylphine rose to prominence as they managed to mitigate the coup d'état instigated by Orphans' elder brother and other conservative nobles. Grantz actually reorganized the militant nobles under his control, which means that it is very unlikely for the Magenta family to allow one of their children to be adopted to the royal family, since they have part of the faction that staged the coup among them, which would cause even more headache. Notably, the ministry faction who was actually in support to Orphans could stir conflicts. Unlike the nobles, the Ministry was essentially dedicated to studying magic and deepening faith in spirits instead of the nobles caste obsessions, so prior that revolt, they remained neutral, but then gave their support to Orphans in an attempt to gain political powers on the long run, which actually worked. Finally, the other houses who survived the coup lost their leaders after multiple executions, so there is pretty much no noble house that could realistically have a right to the throne aside of the royal family. This is pretty much the reason why the King made so much efforts to make Algard the next king with Euphie as his Queen consort to be sure the Kingdom would prosper in peace.
Tilty explains even further the issues the Ministry has with Anis: aside of her ideas being too revolutionary, her lack of "faith" into the spirits appaled them. Even if Anis knows of their existence, her actions doesn't speak reverence (e.g. using spirit stones as materials instead of object of worship etc). Meanwhile, the nobles would also lose their privileges since they have powers thanks to magic. If commoners were to gain the same abilities through such tools, they would no longer need the protection of the nobility. Finally, they discussed about Anis' awareness of the lives of the commoners and her attitude about politics until now.

Anis and Euphie discussion after Tilty left is a bit different since it is actually Anis who invited Euphie to come with her to see the blacksmith who would fix Arc-en-ciel (as a reminder, in the LN, Euphie actually threw Arc-en-Ciel to stop Anis attack that was about to kill Algard, which broke the rapiere).

Instead of Anis being dragged elsewhere by commoners, in the LN Tomas actually gave Anis some money so that she could go on an errand for him, much to Euphie's astonishment. Tomas and Euphie discussion a bit longer than this, with the former explaining how Anis helped them by finding solution to their problems unlike nobles who couldn't even understand what the commoners' problems were.
Unlike the anime, Tomas actually explains why he is unhappy about Anis becoming the next ruler, which was basically what Ilia said to Euphie in the anime. While he admits she could be queen, she isn't cut for it, believing such responsibilities would be too much for her to bear.
Euphie thinks she could handle it with her vassals supporting her, but Tomas then asks Euphie if she doesn't think Anis wouldn't be better suited for something else. While Ephie was uncertain how to answer to that, Tomas added that being able to do something is quite different to being forced to do that. Tomas figured out that Anis would be unable to continue her magicology studies once she becomes Queen, to which Euphie couldn't help but agree with him. Tomas believes that Anis would lose her freedom, which would smother her charms as result.
He goes on, explaining they knew her since she was a child and sympathized with her in regard to her inability to use magic. Even so, she listened to them and shared her hopes and dreams. Even if she stays the same after becoming Queen, Tomas believes she will have to deal with politics which would prevent her to act the way she always did before. Following this, Tomas asks Euphie if becoming queen would make Anis really happy?
Euphie realized all too well it would rob Anis' happiness as result, which made her shed tears in front of Tomas. After remembering that Algard asked her to take care of Anis, Euphie becomes extremely conflicted about her feelings and her duty as a noblewoman.

Another big difference with the LN was Euphie and Tilty discussion. In the LN, it never happened. Instead, before confronting Grantz, Euphie discussed with Sylphine and Lainie at some point, then with her own mother later on.

Queen Sylphine actually invited Euphie for a tea party, and Lainie was with the latter as her attendant. Although the queen is visibly tired after handling domestic affairs instead of diplomatic duties after Algard's incident, she wanted to talk with Euphie, Lainie and Tilty, but the latter declined her invitation.
Sylphine is unsure what to think about Anis' predicaments but also about Anis' true self. In fact, she expected Anis to refuse Orphans' request, but since she agreed and acted as a royalty, the queen is worried about her. As such, she asks Euphie and Lainie how Anis is lately, and upon hearing how Anis has been putting a facade, Sylphine regretted for failing her children. Euphie protested in order to cheer her a bit, but the queen remains self deprecating. In order to alleviate that, Lainie suggests that she uses her vampire abilities to relieve her emotional distress through hypnosis Anis taught her.
After hesitating a bit, Sylphine accepts and Lainie puts her to sleep, encouraging her to dream so she could imagine a situation where she could reach Anis. She actually tried to do that on Anis, but it seems her dragon seal prevented her vampire suggestion to work on her. Euphie feels a bit dejected she couldn't do anything, but Lainie mentions that Anis is particularly protective of Euphie, so Euphie is most likely the closest person to Anis that could give her advice, since Lainie believes Anis sees Euphie as her equal.
Euphie is a bit unsure about that assessment, but Lainie believes that even before their meeting, Anis was relieved Algard was under Euphie's case, and because of this, she probably didn't want Euphie to deal with more hardship, knowing how hard she tried to be Queen in the first place.

Days later, Euphie visited her parents and joined her mother for tea. Her mother noticed how Euphie's attention is drifting and questions her what's on her mind. Euphie admits she doesn't want Anis to be queen, to which her mother realizes that wish conflicts greatly with her sense of responsibility. But in the end, she actually supports her daughter no matter her decision, explaining that even Grantz's righteous decisions weren't always correct. Euphie still questions her own wish, but her mother assures her she can bring change.

Euphie and Grantz discussion was, of course, much longer than that. Euphie actually tried to argue about Anis' shortcomings as a potential ruler, but Grantz believe the kindgom needs Anis to bring changes, even admiting that Orphans couldn't overcome the turmoil Palletia has been facing ever since it has been founded. Grantz even admits that Anis is one of the very few persons who really scare him.
After a while, Grantz also explains what was his plans when he had Euphie married to Algard: he actually hoped to push Anis' magicology throughout the kingdom with Euphie's help as his queen consort. But due to Algard's fall from grace, Grantz's expectations were crushed and he admits that Anis is probably too kind to be a Queen, yet that's the only option left for the kingdom.
Once Euphie stated she wanted to protect Anis' smile, instead of being interrupted by Lumi's spirits, Grantz actually told her about the spirit convenant that could bypass the requirements for the succession of the throne: entering into a pact with an Elemental would start a new royal lineage blessed by the most powerful of all spirits, similarly to the foundation of Palletia. This startled Euphie, as while history was known to everyone, the details about the convenants were kept in secret. According to Grantz, Euphie could realistically become queen as she was educated to serve as royalty to begin with, and the house of Magenta had a distant blood connection with the royal family after all. After such revelations, Grantz then asks Euphie if she has the resolve to enter into a spirit covenant.

Euphie actually went back to her room, obviously thinking about what her father revealed to her. It is only at that time that Lumi appeared in the garden and lured out both Euphie and Grantz with a song, while she casted a spell so everyone else stay asleep in the Magenta domain.
Lumi usually stays in the black forest since she doesn't want to deal with people, although she planned to help Palletia if the dragon was left unchecked for a while. In the end, Lumi showed up because she wanted to judge Euphie regarding her decision to enter into a spirit convenant.

The following section might be covered by the anime a bit later, so it might be actual spoilers, so just in case, I will put another spoiler tag.

Spoiler for Just in case:

This is where Grantz explains Orphans past, describing him as a simple man who wanted to study agriculture. He believes it is for this reason that he let Anis doing whatever she wanted since he couldn't fulfill his own dreams.
Lumi then explains Euphie that to enter a contract, one also needs a strong wish. After hearing Euphie's resolve, Lumi then warns her that a contract is nothing but cruel and is about to tell her the truth about Palletia

I'm not too sure why they changed so much around the last third of the episode. Depending how things are done for the last 2 episodes, it might be a bit contradictory, but well, at least, that part of the story is less disjointed. If they were to be more faithful to the LN, that episode could easily be adapted into 3 instead, which would have been questionable.

I've only made it to the OP of ep 11, and I want to know: why did Anys face those guys alone? Why didn't she have anyone to support her and/or convince her not to murder those disgusting old coots? Or maybe just help her hide the bodies? (Murder sounded better with every word out of their mouths, just saying.)

A few people I know really said that she is powerful herself and has vampire and the best kingdoms magicin on her side. She could have just kill every damn noble who does not let her do as she pleases.

I understand that politics is not that simple, but author really made the drama in these two arcs pretty stupid in terms that they made it look like there is no better solution while in fact there are ton of them if you just think a little. So it is a bit jarring seeing characters choosing the most painful ones for the sake of plot.

Yeah, I'm not liking this arc. The drama feels very forced and Anis isn't acting like herself at all. It did get me curious what kind of solution they'll settle for though. Neither Anis nor Euphie's are viable.

You know. Euphy will be immortal. And Anis also now, probably. And yeah, another grip is that Anis was always smarter than she tries to look, but she does not make smart decisions this time.

Plus Anis parents are just 37. As nobles said, they cam mnage another heir. They just need someone to play the role for now.

Maybe I am biased as after Apothecary Diaries a lot of LNs look pretty weak in plot department, but a lot of my friends have the same complaint (and this series is still in my top 3 this season mind you).

After what happened with Al and Anis, I don't think creating another child to throw to the proverbial dogs is the wisest solution.

Sylphine is unsure what to think about Anis' predicaments but also about Anis' true self. In fact, she expected Anis to refuse Orphans' request, but since she agreed and acted as a royalty, the queen is worried about her. As such, she asks Euphie and Lainie how Anis is lately, and upon hearing how Anis has been putting a facade, Sylphine regretted for failing her children. Euphie protested in order to cheer her a bit, but the queen remains self deprecating. In order to alleviate that, Lainie suggests that she uses her vampire abilities to relieve her emotional distress through hypnosis Anis taught her. After hesitating a bit, Sylphine accepts and Lainie puts her to sleep, encouraging her to dream so she could imagine a situation where she could reach Anis. She actually tried to do that on Anis, but it seems her dragon seal prevented her vampire suggestion to work on her. Euphie feels a bit dejected she couldn't do anything, but Lainie mentions that Anis is particularly protective of Euphie, so Euphie is most likely the closest person to Anis that could give her advice, since Lainie believes Anis sees Euphie as her equal. Euphie is a bit unsure about that assessment, but Lainie believes that even before their meeting, Anis was relieved Algard was under Euphie's case, and because of this, she probably didn't want Euphie to deal with more hardship, knowing how hard she tried to be Queen in the first place. Days later, Euphie visited her parents and joined her mother for tea. Her mother noticed how Euphie's attention is drifting and questions her what's on her mind. Euphie admits she doesn't want Anis to be queen, to which her mother realizes that wish conflicts greatly with her sense of responsibility. But in the end, she actually supports her daughter no matter her decision, explaining that even Grantz's righteous decisions weren't always correct. Euphie still questions her own wish, but her mother assures her she can bring change. Euphie and Grantz discussion was, of course, much longer than that. Euphie actually tried to argue about Anis' shortcomings as a potential ruler, but Grantz believe the kindgom needs Anis to bring changes, even admiting that Orphans couldn't overcome the turmoil Palletia has been facing ever since it has been founded. Grantz even admits that Anis is one of the very few persons who really scare him. After a while, Grantz also explains what was his plans when he had Euphie married to Algard: he actually hoped to push Anis' magicology throughout the kingdom with Euphie's help as his queen consort. But due to Algard's fall from grace, Grantz's expectations were crushed and he admits that Anis is probably too kind to be a Queen, yet that's the only option left for the kingdom. Once Euphie stated she wanted to protect Anis' smile, instead of being interrupted by Lumi's spirits, Grantz actually told her about the spirit convenant that could bypass the requirements for the succession of the throne: entering into a pact with an Elemental would start a new royal lineage blessed by the most powerful of all spirits, similarly to the foundation of Palletia. This startled Euphie, as while history was known to everyone, the details about the convenants were kept in secret. According to Grantz, Euphie could realistically become queen as she was educated to serve as royalty to begin with, and the house of Magenta had a distant blood connection with the royal family after all. After such revelations, Grantz then asks Euphie if she has the resolve to enter into a spirit covenant. Euphie actually went back to her room, obviously thinking about what her father revealed to her. It is only at that time that Lumi appeared in the garden and lured out both Euphie and Grantz with a song, while she casted a spell so everyone else stay asleep in the Magenta domain. Lumi usually stays in the black forest since she doesn't want to deal with people, although she planned to help Palletia if the dragon was left unchecked for a while. In the end, Lumi showed up because she wanted to judge Euphie regarding her decision to enter into a spirit convenant. The following section might be covered by the anime a bit later, so it might be actual spoilers, so just in case, I will put another spoiler tag. Spoiler for Just in case: However, Lumie refuses to tell her the exact details about the convenant itself. Instead, she commented she hasn't aged since she met Grantz when he was younger and actually revealed that people who made a contract with a spirit do not age and cease to be human. This is the option Grantz mentioned that they had back when Orphans' elder brother was staging the coup: He, Sylphine and Orphans tried to enter into a contract, since Orphans had little authority as being the second in line of succession. This is where Grantz explains Orphans past, describing him as a simple man who wanted to study agriculture. He believes it is for this reason that he let Anis doing whatever she wanted since he couldn't fulfill his own dreams. Lumi then explains Euphie that to enter a contract, one also needs a strong wish. After hearing Euphie's resolve, Lumi then warns her that a contract is nothing but cruel and is about to tell her the truth about Palletia I'm not too sure why they changed so much around the last third of the episode. Depending how things are done for the last 2 episodes, it might be a bit contradictory, but well, at least, that part of the story is less disjointed. She could have just kill every damn noble who does not let her do as she pleases. I understand that politics is not that simple, but author really made the drama in these two arcs pretty stupid in terms that they made it look like there is no better solution while in fact there are ton of them if you just think a little. ryllharu Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007	I thought this was an objectively bad episode. It felt like they were screaming through what I can only guess should have been 2-3 episodes worth of content, leaving almost every narrative thread unfinished or summarized. They were very obviously racing through these parts of plot to introduce this Lumi character, who also feels like she's from a completely different series because we have never seen spirits manifest as spheres of light before. Dialogues constantly felt like they were left hanging open. They zipped through one narrative with the hope than inferences in the next would close out the previous ones. Nothing felt like it had any time to breathe and not in a way that felt dense, just rushed.

Why didn't she have anyone to support her and/or convince her not to murder those disgusting old coots? Or maybe just help her hide the bodies? (Murder sounded better with every word out of their mouths, just saying.)

And yeah, another grip is that Anis was always smarter than she tries to look, but she does not make smart decisions this time. Plus Anis parents are just 37. As nobles said, they cam mnage another heir. They just need someone to play the role for now.
