I'm a little puzzled that nobody is discussing this, even when it was recently aired. (If I missed a post on the subject it wasn't for lack of looking.) But, Youka wasn't actually a dog. It looked to me like she was really a fox!!Maybe I'm just the only one who thought that it was worthy of comment?

Anyway, that certainly explains some peculiarities with her behavior. While dogs are loyal and dependable, foxes are different. Particularly in Japanese folklore foxes are known for trickery and mischief. And Youka is certainly mischievious. They are also much more feral than dogs. I wonder if Kouta knows what she really is.

That's true. Youko is a fox. Sly and mischievious both fit Youko as well.

He does.. More will be revealed in episode 14 and is doubly confirmed in episode 22. I won't spoil since I know you don't like to be spoiled.

Me, I'm just waiting for subtitled version of episode 15, just to see the general reaction from the fans who rely on subtitle. Just the memory of that episode makes me crack a smile.

yes youko is a fox...expalins why she is so scared of dogs (fox hunting is cruel -.-)
but arent inukami's ment to be dog gods? or could it be that one of her parents is a fox?

Well, "inu" means dog, so it is certainly implied that an inukami is a dog god, not a fox god. (Kitsune is fox.) However, they are both canine so perhaps she is close enough for government work. Or maybe one of her parents is a dog like you suggest.

Intersting insight about dogs being used to hunt foxes. That must definitely be the source of her fear. I can imagine a tiny baby Youka nearly being killed by foxes as a child. Poor thing.

Nah, they are definitely of the domesticated variety.

I remember having tons of conversations about it when it happened.
(perhaps they were all in irc, so nothing was preserved in this forum)

I was surprised to find out she was a fox as well, but it immediately made perfect sense to me.
only a fox would be capricious, cruel, and cunning enough to have her master swear to be loyal to her
in a life or death situation. Also, abbetting the imprisonment of her father certainly struck me a something
a loyal dog-type would never do. Also, the completely ditzy, random, lecherous, unfaithful, yet gentlemanly
in a crisis Keita makes the perfect match for a fox

Well certainly inukami means Dog God, but inthe end foxes and wolves are simply a different variety of "Dog".

Dog being the human friendly type, sure it's genetic the same way humans are red or green, but it doesn't change the behaviour. As anyone knows a dog can be just as wild as a wolf, as a wolf can be just as domestic as a dog.

But If what i've heard is true, youko being part fox would definitely fit the bill. But in Japan dogs aren't used to hunt foxes. Its a western concept....

So might be that, but who knows?

Either way, episode 13 was great.

Youko pwns.

This is definitely a good point, and helps explain Youko's behavior, and stuff

My my, Inukami 12/13 was incredible!!

Now i have some respect for Keita... well, a little! He surely gave his all against that crazy and stupid but powerful Shinigami. Of course, it was not enough, but he already knew that. Probably he was counting Yoko would destroy him if he fail.

And he knew if he suffered enough in front of her eyes, she would not take anymore and use all her power against him. Very smart... the only way to counter the spell of terror on her was with HATE!

And man, Youko surely is powerful! A lot more than the other inukamis or even Hake! And on top of that, a Kitsune! Now all makes sense...

I already read some spoilers, so i know what will happen next. But even so, i can't wait to see the next episode!
