I have to admit stringing NC OP, Prelude and NC ED together was a very good idea. Kudos to a.f.k. !

I put a premium on video quality, good translations and subtitles that project so that you can read them at a distance. Personally, I prefer literal translations. If you want to localize stuff, I think that it should be in the episode notes.

I put less priority on the karaoke.

I have to agree that this screams for an h264 version. My computer would also scream if I tried to play that version.

Thanks a.f.k. for the great work.

Now, if only The Triad would do this.....

Do you mean air or be fansubbed in it? It'll 99% air in HD yeah as it's being made in it and iirc BS-i does show some HD stuff.

h264 isn't usually that bad for PCs though, there's just a few encoders who use it to its absolute fullest and THEN you have PCs going wild. Like a certain .hack//roots sub group with their 220mb files that occasionally desync even when I have coreavc on :/

And bleh, I really hope Triad DON'T do this. I love them to bits and all but afk are really high quality subbers, Triad acknowledge this, and I'm scared it might run into Nanoha Strikers time >_>

The second I saw the Prelude up, I did a little dance. It's just so nice to be able to be on the same page with the Japanese speakers here. It really seems to improve the quality of discussion.

For me, comprehensibility is the most important aspect of a sub. I'm not qualified to judge a translation. I have, however, watched fansubs I had serious problems following. I recognized all the words. Individually, I knew what they all meant. I just couldn't understand what they meant strung together the way they were.

Haruhi was a very dialogue driven. The narrator did a lot of talking, and the title character was also a bit of a chatterbox as well. A.F.K.'s translator is a good writer with a fine ear for dialogue. (A.F.K., as far as I know, is one person.) He really did a great job of giving the characters a voice I could understand and appreciate. I'm really looking forward to this project.

Why would you want it in avi? I think that mkv would be nice as you can have the option of selecting different subtitles(soft or hard).

Just watched A.F.K.'s version of the prelude. I am EAGERLY anticipating this series and October 5th is wayyyy too far away.

Use wmp with the cole2k coded, you have no problems playing mkv. My pc laughed about it. And it's a notebook after all.

Actually, I loved Triad's Air and hope that they do Kanon also. I'm a fan of their subtitles and video quality. Nice video quality and accurate subtitles that project well. Also, they're good about sign translations too.

Pretty please Triad.....

The format from hell for my computer is h264 mp4.

I'm really looking forward to this series, but as I have mentioned earlier, I haven't watched the original Kanon. (As suggested, I'll very likely go back and watch it after enjoying the remake.) If it's not too much trouble, can anyone direct me to or provide some basic information on the characters without spoiling the story too much?

Thanks in advance. I'd go through this thread in greater depth, but I feel like I would be treading on grounds teeming with spoilers.

Thanks for the tip. I'll venture carefully.

Like in any show, most of the basic introductions and all will very likely be made in the first few episodes. However, despite knowing that fact and watching the prelude already, I still find it very tempting to familiarize myself a bit more with the characters. This series has quite a fascinating cast, and I'm interested in a little sneak peek.

Yuuichi is friendly and outgoing, though as nice as he is, he needs to learn the sensitivity of a woman. He once lived in the town in which the story takes place, but all his memories of that time are gone, slowly coming back to him as he interacts with the people he met in the past. Heroines Ayu Tsukimiya (月宮あゆ Tsukimiya Ayu) (voiced by Yui Horie) Ayu is a strange girl that bumped into Yuuichi early in the story. She is immediately recognizable by her winged backpack, red headband, and tendency to refer to herself with masculine pronouns. They soon become fast friends after she meets him a few more times, although she does seem a bit strange, always tackling him and yelling "Yuuichi-kun~!". Ayu is constantly searching for something she's lost, and even she does not know what it is. In the first anime version, Yuuichi finds a headband identical to Ayu's while unpacking from his move- the question is, why? Ayu has a fondness for taiyaki. Nayuki Minase (水瀬名雪 Minase Nayuki) (voiced by Mariko Kōda) Nayuki is Yuuichi's cousin, with whom he moves in. She has always been in love with him—in Japan, such relationships between first cousins are not only acceptable but common—and must learn how to deal with these feelings, especially with the threat that he may fall for one of the other girls. She adores strawberry sundaes, but the mere mention of her mother's homemade jam makes her sick. Nayuki is the world's heaviest sleeper, collecting dozens of alarm clocks which only ever wake up Yuuichi. Because of her trouble waking up, she is always running for school (and is in fact the school's star runner because of this). Shiori Misaka (美坂栞 Misaka Shiori) (voiced by Akemi Satō) Shiori is a first-year student. She suffers from an illness since birth that has caused her to become very physically weak, and is constantly absent from school because of it. She loves drama and is always inventing reasons for things that happen in her life, but the real-life drama of a sister that denies her and a life threatened by illness is encroaching on her. Strangely enough, sick as she is, Shiori thinks nothing of sitting outside the school for hours on end every day eating ice cream in the middle of winter. Makoto Sawatari (沢渡真琴 Sawatari Makoto) (voiced by Mayumi Iizuka) Makoto attacked Yuuichi out-of-the-blue in the middle of town. She was then carried back to Yuuichi and Nayuki's house, where she lives as a guest there for the remainder of her story. Though she has lost her memory and cannot remember much about herself, the one thing that Makoto is sure of is that she holds a grudge against Yuuichi from the past when he lived there. Makoto's amnesia is much more severe than Yuuichi's, but from an entirely different source. She loves cats and gets her own in the middle of the story, but feels sad that pets are abandoned when their owners cannot take care of them. Her constant pranks on Yuuichi range from amusing to downright mean, but she honestly grows to like him. Mai Kawasumi (川澄舞 Kawasumi Mai) (voiced by Yukari Tamura) Mai is a third-year student of the same high school that Yuuichi goes to. He met her standing alone in the school building at night, with a sword in her hand. She apparently takes it upon herself to fight and defeat demons at night while the school is deserted. Because of this, she is constantly blamed for accidents because she never denies them, being too sincere to say anything and knowing that no one will believe that there are demons in the school. Her best friend is Sayuri, the only person besides Yuuichi that does not believe that Mai is a dangerous delinquent. Yuuichi begins to bring her supper at the school while she is fighting. Secondary heroines Akiko Minase (水瀬秋子 Minase Akiko) (voiced by Yūko Minaguchi) Akiko is Nayuki's mother and Yuuichi's aunt. Her main role is in Nayuki's story. She works and takes care of the house, cooking all sorts of food, most of which is good except for her homemade jam. She appears to not realize exactly what is going on, taking in strays such as Makoto and assuming lame excuses for her behaviour, but she may just realize that Makoto is a good person and can be cured of her anger- all of which is true. Akiko certainly exhibits more knowledge of the situation than Yuuichi as far as the origins of Ayu and Makoto are concerned, hinting that she is familiar with the supernatural goings-on in the town and how they apply to Yuuichi. Akiko is very important to Nayuki since she does not have a father. Kaori Misaka (美坂香里 Misaka Kaori) (voiced by Ayako Kawasumi) Mainly in Shiori's story, Kaori is also Nayuki's best friend and Yuuichi's and Nayuki's classmate. She is very smart and knows a lot about the schoolmates and townspeople, but doesn't appear to be aware of any of the supernatural things that happen, even after Yuuichi's caring saves someone close to her. Her surname and appearance indicate that she is Shiori's sister, and Shiori affirms this, but Kaori vehemently denies it. Mishio Amano (天野美汐 Amano Mishio) (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) A key player in Makoto's plot thread, Mishio is not so much in this story as the other characters in this section, and in fact only appears near the end. She mysteriously warns Yuuichi to stay away from Makoto when Makoto's health begins to fail. Why? Mishio knows the mysterious and magical workings of the town, and she has experienced the loss that comes from asking for a miracle. She can immediately tell when someone is not normal or not even human... Sayuri Kurata (倉田佐祐理 Kurata Sayuri) (voiced by Tomoko Kawakami) Sayuri is Mai's only friend before she meets Yuuichi, and thus her biggest part is in Mai's story. She is the daughter of a wealthy family, and always tries to smile and help others. She uses more formal Japanese honorifics for Yuuichi when she addresses him, even when they become close friends. Sayuri cares very deeply about Mai, even though she does not know about the demons. Said monsters begin to target her near the end of Mai's story, but she stubbornly stays with Mai. Others Jun Kitagawa (北川潤 Kitagawa Jun) (voiced by Tomokazu Seki) A friend of Yuuichi's who sits behind him at high school. Viewers do not see a lot of him in the anime. Jun has a crush on Kaori. He's mainly just there for character development, as well as to add in one of the few male characters with a name. Piro (ピロ Piro) A stray cat that Nayuki finds, and despite her allergies, adores. Makoto, after an incident where she feels that keeping a pet is cruel because the pet always gets abandoned, loses the cat and then searches until she finds it, takes the cat home to the Minase house. After Yuuichi suggests calling it "Nikuman" because of Makoto's fondness for meat buns, Nayuki decides that a food name is a great idea, and Yuuichi suggests "Piroshiki", a transliteration of the Russian word for meat bun.
