Website ads aren't really all that annoying. However, most of them are run by a few small companies. They can use cookies to track what websites you visit!

Here are opt-out links for major advertisers:
Doubleclick http://www.doubleclick.com/us/about_...click/privacy/ - click "Ad Cookie Opt-Out"
Advertising http://www.advertising.com/OptOut2.html - verify
ValueClick http://www.mediaplex.com/mplx_privac...l#_Toc41282072 - verify

Other advertisers, such as PayPal and other scummy companies, don't have opt-out links. If you use I.E., you are out of luck. But if you use Mozilla, Netscape or Firebird, you can block banner ads with this nifty script:

Mozilla also allows you to block cross-site cookies with the click of a button.

I guess I didn't prostelytize Mozilla well enough

It comes with automatic popup-blocking, too.

Yeah, but then you have to scan once a week to delete your cookies. :/

Also in addition to Ad-Aware, there is Spybot Search and Destroy, which usually gets the stuff that Ad-Aware cant. Also, for really nasty bugs and spyware, Hijack This is always a good tool to have handy.
Its always good to delete your cookies and stuff once a week or so like ashibaka said, as well as have a good pop up stopper. Personally I use the program Zero Popup because it blocks adds, popup windows, popunders, messenger popups, stops pages from resizing IE, some spyware and stops floating adds.
