It never even occurred to me that anyone thought he was a woman until I saw the manga scanlation. I have no idea why the translator thought that.

I think everyone who thought that probably thought it because the scanlator said so.

But it even got a surprised translator's note from the scanlators that they too thought professor was a man - right next to the words "She's starting to look more like a coach"!
Wouldn't they double-check such things? Maybe she was a woman in manga but was turned into a guy in the anime?

I sincerely doubt it. I think the scanlators just made a strange assumption and screwed it up.

I didn't need the scanlator to have serious doubts. The guy kinda looks like an old lady to me. The hairstyle, maybe?

At first, I thought he was a man as well. Then the scanlation said otherwise, and I thought, 'Well, okay, this is just a flat-chested old lady.' Then came the anime, and I wasn't sure if the coach was a woman with a manly voice, or actually a man.

Anyway, looked it up, and the coach's name is Kikukawa Sanae. Sanae is a female name.

So is the coach a manly woman or a man with a womanly name?

Huh, the anime has been pretty consistent with the manga so far, but about a third of episode 47 was anime-original/things moved around.

Anyone know if the fillers were author-approved or completely made up?

Even down episodes are never really down. This show has provided consistent, exciting entertainment for around a year now. Really curious how things turn out here - I have a slight feeling Seido will lose, but honestly I have no clue and that's just a gut feeling. I am guessing we will see the whole pitching crew thrown in there - Tanba, Sawamura, Furuya, and Kawakami as closer? Certainly seems to be foreshadowing that with Tanba's speech.

I know they are trying to make it heroic and all, but Ryousuke really needs to get out of the game. He's been lucky so far, sort of, but he is doing more harm than good for the team. I hope he gets taken out soon, and they put in Haruichi.

Yeah, honestly to me all they are doing is making Ryo look bad. Playing hurt can be a necessity in sports when it's better than the alternative. But his play has dropped to a point where he is obviously inferior on the field to his brother. There is no reason for him to be playing and he should have pulled himself from the game last episode at the very least.

No matter how awesome they try to make that moment at the end look it just reflects horribly on Ryosuke. They can't win a game if Kuramochi has to literally be covering his position for everything that looks close because he knows Ryosuke won't make it. Enough is enough. Either the coach needs to clue in here and make that decision or Ryousuke himself does.

I'm madder at Tanba than at Ryosuke. For a guy who's supposed to be the team's ace, he leaves a lot to be desired. No wonder Seidou relies so much on its 4-pitcher relay.

Tanba has been playing to the best of his abilities. He is not hiding anything from the team that is a detriment to the team. He was never a dominant pitcher, so that's not expected of him. He relies on his fielders to get the job done. If anyone is responsible, it is the coach who chose him and kept him in, even though the coach knows his limitations and weaknesses.

The problem for me is that Seidou is skating by on luck and stupidity. Ryou is being incredibly selfish here, and he should never have dumped the responsibility on Kuro's (a kouhai) shoulders. It irritates me (reality or fiction) when I see injured players put the team at risk by hiding their injuries and then made out to be heroes for doing so. And we're supposed to cheer when that's rewarded?

As for Tanba, the problem is he just isn't very good. And when a guy isn't very good, isn't inspirational and doesn't have youth as an excuse, really, what's to make him an interesting or relatable character we want to pull for?

Right now, Inashiro is clearly the better team. They bunt too much, but they aren't stupid. They don't Hollywood much, and they aren't egregiously arrogant considering their success. Why, exactly, are we supposed to be living and dying for Seidou when they're clearly the weaker team and right now, their banner is being carried by a bunch of third-years with the charisma of plywood ("Ugah!" is not good dialogue, sorry)? They need to turn this game over to the first-years ASAP or it's going to be a dramatic lost cause.

Funny how this game has felt pretty boring considering its importance, but as soon as Sawamura steps on the mound it's super compelling. Just the strength of his character, I guess.

Wow, when Sawamura was pitching, it felt so intense. I'm glad he struck out the ultra-arrogant Narumiya. I'm sure Narumiya will be upset and flustered when he goes out to pitch, and that will lead to mistakes, which Seido can take advantage of.

I was expecting Ryousuke to be replaced as well, since the coach told Hariuchi to warm up. The coach could have done a batting order switch in order for Sawamura to bat as late as possible; however, judging from the preview, Haiuchi will be switched in at some point as well.

I was seconds away from bailing on this episode, no lie. That's how pissed off I was getting watching Seidou founder around and get lucky time after time. Kataoka is an idiot, injured players are putting the team at risk and they keep dodging bullets. Somehow you want the heroes in a sports anime to deserve to succeed, dammit - a little luck is fine, but there has to be some merit there, too. Thankfully, Eijun arrived on the scene as a relief pitcher in every sense of the word. Just in time for Seidou and for the series.

The fact that the all of the opposition have been almost universally more interesting than the Seidou third-years is (mostly) a problem for this show but Eijun transforms the series when he appears. It's as if the third-years are in black-and-white and he's in color - it's a completely different show once he takes the mound.

I was glad to have Sawamura out there and taking the energy back. There's a guy who has managed to get this far through his hard work and playing to his strengths. He's not hiding an injury and putting the whole game at risk, he's just doing what he can out there. Plus was pretty satisfying to see him bring down Narumiya. It might get harder if he faces these guys too many times, but at this point in the game he can probably carry it for quite a while.

I guess this is the game where Kataoka's reliance on his 3rd years and trusting too much in his players bites him in the rear. There are times you have to trust guys and there are times when you recognize that they aren't good enough.

I feel for Tanba, if he was at 100% he probably could carry things well enough. He was never an amazing pitcher, but he was a heck of a lot better than he could be here. Obviously the Ryousuke situation is just frustrating since he's actively hurting the team. I'm fine in sports in reality that sometimes guys stay out there and play hurt. Long series and playoffs just make that a necessity at times. But when you are that hurt that you are unable to be a better option than a rookie, that's when you step out.

For now will see if Sawamura's energy can carry this thing. I'm glad they had him be a reason the 3rd years who were getting worn down became energized. He is the kind of person who can move people thanks to his pure energy.

The anime (and manga) has always been about Sawamura Eijun and how he copes in a school which has one of the powerhouse baseball teams in the region. With the exception of Takigawa Chris, the rest of the 3rd years are mostly making up the numbers in the narrative. The other main characters being Miyuki and Furuya with Kominato Haruichi in support. When Sawamura is out of it or plays a very minor role, it slows down the anime (and the manga) into a bit of a bore. He is the heart and soul of this series.

Won't mention how this match develops as I'm following the manga (I'm at Chapter 399 now and this episode reaches Chapter 169) but it gets very interesting now that Sawamura is on the mound.
