Well, let's see....
This thread is always a tough one for me, but here goes. **** Third: OP - "Koko" from Kyousogiga. ED - "I sang a neverending melody" from Kamisama no inai Nichiyobi. Second: OP - "X Encounter" from Tokyo Ravens. ED - "Kibou no Hana" from Kotoura-san. First: For me these two were my undisputed faves this year. OP - "Shape my Story" from Stella C3-bu. No contest for me. ED - "Neguse" from Tamako Market. Also no contest for me. **** Honorable Mentions: OP's: Other than "Zoetrope" from Amnesia no others really stood out as special for me this year, curiously. ED's: Plenty of ED's stood out, though, including: "Maware" from Unbreakable Machine-doll (really well done and fitting for the series overall, even though I do not like the adaptation); "Innocent Note" from Gatchaman Crowds; "Zutto ne" from Aiura; "Daisy" from Kyoukai no Kanata; "Glass no Mikazuke" from Dansai bunri no Crime Edge; "Arigatou" from Tamayura ~futatose~ ; "Smile F" from Photo Kano; "Over Sky" - one of the many ED from GJ-bu, the one dedicated to Kirara.

For me, the song in either OP or ED is the key factor. In short, it must be easy on my ears. Fail in that area means the OP/ED will be insta-dropped even if the visual is on a masterpiece-level.
As such here's my list of favorites : OP: 1. Attack on Titan Spoiler for video:
2. Arpeggio of Blue Steel: Ars Nova Spoiler for video:
3. Saint Seiya Omega Spoiler for video:
ED: 1. Attack on Titan Spoiler for video:
2. Devil Survivor 2 Spoiler for video:
3. Rozen Maiden - Zuruckspulen Spoiler for video:
Honorable mentions (not in order): Spoiler for Quite a number of videos:

(The titles are links):
Openings: 3. Kyousogiga Comments: It's like a trip back to 70ies psychodelia both in sound and vision, but the musical arrangement is a bit more disciplined. But the influence is very audible (the way they use the piano, for example). A really good intoduction to the show: it's gentle, but it has drive. 2. Namiuchigawa Muromi San Comments: Aww, what can I say. The song has this driving rhythm that just keeps going forward, and the video ends in a determined mermaid charge against a meteroid. An escalation like that can only end in catastrophe. Oh, and Muromi demonstrates sign language, to acknowledge her deaf fans. 1. Uchouten Kazuko Comments: Oh, how I love this opening. That song! I swear I can hear the tanuki idot blood calling out to me... (Tanuki have two modes: "Oh, that's interesting!" and "Oh, crap!") And the animation is perfect, too, introducing all the characters, and having a tanuki fly into the sun, while discoloured Kyouto streets rush by. Undisputed favourite, this year. Honorable mentions: Rozen Maiden ~ Zurückspulen (appropriately creepy); Aiura (the opening with the inexplicable crabs [and Steve Jobs, and Andy Warhol style]) Endings: 3. Watamote Comments: They had many interesting endings that always fit the episode. But the standard ending is probably my favourite. Walking through the cell phones, and the way she suddenly pops up towards the camera... The singing is appropriately off, but somehow still keeps the tune. Brilliant. 2. Aku no Hana Comments: I couldn't find one directly from the show. It's always sort of different, seguing in and the credits. It's utterly weird and fits the mood. No clear tempo to the vocals, all very awkward. Then that driving rhythm all relentless, and those fluty-stringy tones... Say what you want about Aku no Hana's visuals, but the soundtrack was stellar, including openings and endings. 1. Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge - special ending of episode 6, Glass no Mikazuki Comments: It's just so beautiful when they watch the sky, the soundtrack fades out and the ending music fades in. Then their dance, and the credits as if it were a movie, to let mood sink in. This ending, like no other, shows what's so great about the shows directions. Love it. Honorable mention: Machinedoll (nice rhythm and fun to watch), Cuticle Tantei Inaba (I didn't like the show too much, but the Don singin his Ending was hilarious) |

It's been a very strong year for OPs, so it's hard to round it down to three favorites.
So I'll just chime in with agreement on PSYCHO PASS OP2; "Out of Control" by Nothing's Carved in Stone, and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya OP; "Starlog" - ChouCho. Those were definitely two of the better OPs of the year, imo. On the ED side, I find Nagi no Asukara's downright enchanting/soothing, so that would probably be my favorite ED of the year. Majestic Prince and Rozen Maiden - Zuruckspulen also had very good EDs, I think.

Openings:
1. "Mousou Express" by Kana Hanazawa (Monogatari Series: Second Season OP3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7avlmrsdLM I've listened to this song more than any other anime opening in 2013. What makes this opening so special is that it is an inversion from Sengoku Nadeko's opening from the first season, "Renai Circulation" both musically and visually. Renai Circulation was bright and cute, and Mousou Express is dark and still cute, but not as cute and not the same kind of cute as her first opening. It fits perfectly with the message the arc is trying to portray. "Do you want to call her cute now?" 2. "Uchouten Jinsei" by milktub (Uchouten Kazoku OP1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrnD7R9ohRs This song is just so much fun to sing. It's just as fun to sing as the show is to watch. 3. "Watashi no Bara wo Haminasai" by ALI PROJECT (Rozen Maiden 2013 OP1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YPgxwtVUbs I just really like this group for their unique style of music. It's great to hear them again. Honorable Mentions: "Never Say Never" by TKDzZb (Danganronpa: The Animation OP1) - I'm very impressed with the English rapping in this one. "sirius" by Eir Aoi (Kill la Kill OP1) - The opening of Kill la Kill always gets me pumped up. "Preserved Roses" by T.M. Revolution & Nana Mizuki (Valvrave the Liberator OP1) - Also gets me pumped up. - Endings: 1. "Yokan" by Itou Masumi (RDG ~Red Data Girl~ ED1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=423VTWIa7wE So peaceful and any song by Itou Masumi is an instant like for me. 2. "Aqua Terrarium" by Yanagi Nagi (Nagi no Asukara ED1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srvvhRYE1Qw It fits with the setting so well, and I enjoy how soothing it is after all of the drama that goes on in the show. 3. "Boku Janai" by angela (Valvrave the Liberator ED1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks2PPccPfK8 (sorry, there is no good video of this ending) BOKU JANAI BOKU JANAI BOKU JANAI! The first half of the first Valvrave season always ended with awesomeness. Honorable Mention: "Hello Especially" by Sukima Switch (Gin no Saji ED1) - Very cheerful, but didn't make the cut. |

Openings:
1 - Guren no Yumiya [Shingeki no Kyojin] The most memorable OP for me this year. One of the few anime OPs that took the anime fandom/Internet by storm. 2 - Preserved Roses [Kakumeiki Valvrave] A catchy, energetic T.M. Revolution and Nana Mizuki duet. 3 - Watashi wa Souzou Suru [Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince] It alternates between moments of calmness and heavy rock sections without sounding too jarring. A really good song. Endings: 1 - Utsukushii Zankoku na Sekai [Shingeki no Kyojin] A powerful ballad with lyrics that link to the themes of the series. 2 - Aqua Terrarium [Nagi no Asukara] A very pleasant, soothing song, and works well with the visuals. 3 - Boku Ja Nai [Kakumeiki Valvrave] All of Valvrave's EDs are really good so far, but Boku Ja Nai stood out the most to me. The lyrics also reflect nicely on the series' events during its usage. |
