Yes pretty cool it definitely gives me a nostalgia effect, it really is the same chara from the manga.

However I'm really not unhappy about the new one, overall I like them, especially in Kana's case.

Never read the manga but I have to say I prefer the anime characters. But I can see how it would upset some fans since some of the differences are quite big.

Yes, I do love the way MADhouse put a new, more modern spin on the character design, but just like many other manga readers, I was a bit put off initially when they decided to make Shinji a four-eyed wimp. Looking back, their intention worked perfectly though.

Still, the nostagia...

Kana benefits the most from the new design. She looks so much cuter in the anime, especially with the ear muffs.

I can totally understand the manga people's reaction when a studio decides to change some important stuff from the manga, pisses me off.

though I guess since my first look at parasyte was from the anime, looking at the comparasion OP, I much prefer the looks from the anime. I thought it was bad enough that izumi looked like a plain every-other-MC kinda guy, than seeing what he actually looked like...lets just say i'm glad he looks like way he does in the anime.

It's a bit different when there is such a time gap in how the art is drawn, in my opinion. Unless the art design was intentionally meant to be stuck in a particular time period, I don't think it's wrong to modernize things a bit. I probably wouldn't have changed some of the details (like the school uniform going from long to short skirt), but the anime designs straddle a nice line between new and old.

But...it's purists we're talking about. Unless it's a 1:1 ratio of everything from the manga to the anime, it's never good enough.

I'm not saying the effort is bad though. It's pretty neat to see a concept of what it would like if the show had been adapted back then.

It is pretty obvious but the modernization can be seen also in background elements of the story. Mobile phones, internet, flat screens, none of those existed in the original story.

Migi could only acquire his knowledge from Shinichi's library. And Shinichi's instead of a MP3 player was listening to a walk-man when Migi attacked him

I like that actually. I'm okay with modernising background technology etc (for the sake of viewer immersion), but making the designs more "cutesy" imo is not an improvement. Murano's hairstyle is more practical in the manga.

Judging from the OP/ED, I'm going to guess that they will eventually let Murano's bangs hang down. So the change may be similar to Shinichi.

Biggest difference isn't their looks, or Shinichi's "sissyfied" personality early on, but rather change in Murano's personality.
Most of her easy-going fun-lovin' wise-crackin' character is gone, replaced by a shy, modest girl.

I really loved her smugness in the manga, and sad to see it gone.

Sounds like Murano is a complete type of character. Maybe we will see it later on when she lets her bangs down, kind of like how Shinichi became a "man" after he came back from his trip.

That's true, this is one change that was really unnecessary and it just makes Murano's personality more generic and unoriginal.

The problem is that the change in Shinichi's outlook and personality is something that already existed in the manga and it was merely accentuated in the anime.

There's hardly any reason to think that Murano will become more easy-going.

Eventually, Murano will find out about the parasyte. I can't imagine her being clueless throughout the whole series. Once she accepts that, if she doesn't die, then I can see character change from there.
