Animes based on Japanese legends/fairytales/mythology

Hi, I'm looking for anime like title suggests. I know a lot of animes have references to mythical stuff but I'm strictly looking for the story to be based on the mythology or legend...umm....like Ayashi No Ceres? Probably not the best example but I guess thats the best example I can think of off the top of my head. The specific genre is of no real concern. Thanks for the help!

I don't think Pandora Hearts fall under Japanese Mythology,, Manju Bun.

Shall second Natsume Yuujinchou, because personally i think it's the best title for what you're looking for. Will also recommend Nurarihyon no Mago.

xxxHoLiC - deals with a lot of japanese folktales and believes

Tactics - boy befriends a Tengu and works together with him to solve supernatural mysteries

Shonen Onmyouji

Wagaya no Oinari Sama - a family awakens a fox spirit in order to protect them from evil spirits.

Ayakashi Japanese Classic Horrors - since Manju recommended Mononoke, you might as well watch this prequel, I thought it was pretty good!

Second Nurarihyon no Mago

Seirei no Moribito was written by an Ethnologist (Uehashi Nahoko) and it's a bit of a combination of folklore and legends from all over Asia, and even Australia.

Hi no Tori is all about the asian version of the phoenix. Or rather how said asian phoenix can affect the lifes or mere humans.

Mokke is Mushishi for kids. (I realize now the manga has been serialized in seinen magazines. It's a surprise to me who only knows the anime adaptation). Instead of a deep / beautiful story about weird things, you get a cute story about an element of japanese mythology / folklore every episode.
It's not as good as most animes mentioned in this thread (still a decent watch), but it's probably the best match to your request.

The comic called "Tenken" is a perfect one. I've read both in Japanese and English version just released last month. It is based on Japanese mythology "Yamata no Orochi." The one chosen woman has to sarcrifise herself to protect entire villege. But this manga goes deeper than that. The author is using the mythology as a outline of story to show about today's society. There is no such a sarcrifese now days, we think. But if we think about it, we are still doing same thing. One person goes war to protect the country...
It is very beautiful manga. The picture looks like it was written by Japanese brush paint. The author won Japanese media award with this manga.
Tenken by Yumiko Shirai
Google and check it out.

I think the Bakeneko sequence in Ayakashi is the best of all the Apothecary stories myself, followed by the first arc of Mononoke. The DVD still costs less than $10.

Mouryou no Hako
has a lot of discussions about various mystic traditions like Onmyoudou. This is a dense, demanding show; you should be fully awake when watching. If you download this, use the batch version.
