I'd say you really miss out a lot if you don't get the references.

I nearly lost it when Katsura was about to sortie and 0079's main theme started playing, then "Katsura IIIKIMAAAAASU!". That was gold.
Also when Elizabeth got voiced by Tōru Furuya I laughed hard.

Well, this ep. is really golden if you're a gundam hardcore fans since there's many reference to the first Gundam series

Gintoki, Katsura, and Sakamoto speech is from Gihren and Char, many Elizabeth costume with Gundam UC hairstyle (there's also from Naruto), the words in Earth "To my home planet, to my friend, from space with love" looks like Zeta Gundam op.2 title "To the water planet, from space with love", etc

This ep. really big with Gundam fans in Japan

Considering I only made it thru part of S1 I stil enjoy Gintama without getting all the references from earlier shows. I totally think you can still watch S2 and enjoy it w/o all of S1 cuz I am enjoying it

Mostly I didn't get the Gundam refs from this epi but its not gonna make me go out and watch any Gundam shows

Why were you in such a hurry to start the second season though? It seems quite a few people have done that... I think it would have been better to keep watching the first series, no matter how long it takes you to catch up.

While it's certainly possible to enjoy the second season without having watched the entirety of the first, I don't believe you can enjoy it as much as those of us who have watched everything and have connected with the characters.
