RK is a great choice, seconded. If you're not allergic to romance and sports, the lead in Cross Game is the very antithesis of whiny and good for nothing.

Try out Teppen Toppen Gurren Lagann.
The main character starts out whiny (Scared of battle), but he overcomes that as the series goes on. The characters on the side will make up for it and I am sure you will be highly entertained. Really, just ignore what I just said about the whinyness, as it won't really impact how you view the series. You should just give it a shot.

Wolf's Rain - Kiba is aggressive and stubborn at times but never whiny and mainly reliable
Black Lagoon (english dub recommended)- he starts off whiny and quickly becomes a passively badass character. also, you would start panicking too if you were in his place Baccano! (english dub recommended)- actually there isn't a main lead for this one. the one cowardly character in the series completely mans up when in a critical situation. CLANNAD - Tomoya is an epic male lead with an excellent sense of humor Angel Beats! - Otonashi is pretty strong-willed. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Simon is always scared at the beginning (Kamina's sheer GAR makes up for it) but becomes stronger and stronger as the series goes on.

In Noein, the heroine is brave and plucky. Pretty much everyone else, with one important exception, is "gar."
The male lead in Oh! Edo Rocket joyfully takes on the task of building a rocket to the moon (in 1843 Japan) and fights the Shogunate government the whole way.

If you do start watching Skip Beat, just keep in mind that the anime only covers about 35% of the on going manga, so you should start reading that after the series.

Perhaps maybe Golgo 13? I don't think anyone would call him "whiny and good for nothing person."
I thought Hei in Darker Than Black was a pretty good lead too. Ryo in City Hunter only gets whiny when he doesn't get the girl, which is always. Other than that, he's cool. And I could be wrong, but I don't remember the main guy in Fate-Stay Night to be too weak and whiny. Or was he? |

His constant "I will save everyone even though I suck and will get killed" was too much for me to handle. Yeh it was loyal but I didn't see how it would help, if anything it always caused Saber a lot of trouble. Only somewhere in the middle and towards the end he actually started to be useful, yet still annoying as hell. You can try Hakuouki (my avatar and sig), none of male characters whine and suck there... well maybe some but they don't play major role. Though series slightly lack in action. But season 2 has to come this autumn.

^I sure do!
I really tried not to hate him but it was an impossible task for me -_- Reckoner I guess he does, I saw the trailer and movie is several times shorter than anime so not enough time to whine I also went through half of 3rd path in the game, he is not that annoying there too. If anything his inner thoughts sometimes make up for it. However at one point I wanted to kill him again but thankfully it was a bad end path
