I guess from a storyline stand point you could say, well they knew this would all happen, but still since I dont know what happens, I dont know if Roy is gonna open the gate, it just seems like a high priced bet on Father's part. To me since this had bee planned for who knows how long they were have made sure to have 5 in the first place. Of course less dramatics for us then
Ok answer, with no spoilers of course ...
let's just say you can expect Father to have thought it through further than that
They were scouting for sacrifices for a long time after all and also had potential sacrifices in sight. Remember how the Homunculi love to refer to alchemists as 'precious confirmed/potential sacrifices' . And they had taken Dr. Marcoh in with that purpose in mind.
Can't really be answered/discussed properly until next week, I don't want to give anything away.

Just rewatched the ep ... and I still cringe at the Riza-slit part -___- All that blood, brutal T_T

Thanks and I kinda figured Father had thought a bit farther then that, it just seemed weird to me as I was trying to figure out who the 5 would be.

Yeah, they pretty much went overboard on the blood (while showing the drawing of that blood off screen, much like with Kimblee). As much as we've seen her bleed so far, she should have been quite empty some time ago... What was that "Rule of Anime" about anime characters having an extra gallon or two of blood more than real people, and the resultant high pressure that blood is under? ^_^

And is the reason why the five sacrifices aren't ready really a spoiler at this point? We've got enough pieces of the puzzle to answer that one without getting into specifics. And logic should inform you the rest of the way.
Spoiler for those who don't want it spelled out for them:

It could have been a lot worse. Like, the blood squirting out like a shower. It'd be cool if it was a bad guy, since it was Riza it's an instant emoticon.

Oh, and I caught the English dub on CN the other night. It was horrible, so very horrible. Ed calls Izumi "teacher." Someone got paid to make that decision?

They kind of expanded on the fighting in the anime, since they subdue Scar, Mustang, and Hawkeye pretty damn quickly in the manga, and before they can, they do a great job of using blunt force with the hilt of their blades on mustang to keep him from using his flames.

They're mini-Bradleys, really, capable of rather easily being able to subdue Scar, who even without his alchemy is a master hand-to-hand combat specialist, one of the top Ishvalan Warrior Priests, the average of which is capable of taking out ten soldiers on his own. Mustang, Riza, and Scar would probably have their hands full each just facing one of the candidates, nevermind a large group that outnumbers them several times over.

while i'd rather have him and Al call Izumi sensei, it makes more sense to call her teacher since FMA is set in a somewhat "western" country.

Personally, hearing someone call another "Teacher" sounds really weird. It just feels more like a title than a pronoun. Like, it'd feel weird to say "Teacher taught us things.", but make more sense to say "The/Our teacher taught us things."

And since she taught them martial arts too, I always felt it'd be less odd to use Master. But whatever.

The whole teacher issue could be changed, though personally i don't see what's wrong with Al calling Ed Brother.

Yeah, master is what they should have used. However, sensei is an accepted word in the US for martial arts and everything, so even that would have worked better than teacher.

Al's addressing of Ed should change depending on the situation. It's not natural to use brother as a name in English.

I want to know if the subtitles reflect this poor translation, cause if it does, I sure as hell won't be buying it (and I was thinking about it too).

Man, ANN is a really, really, really horrible website. Instead of addressing the translation, dubs, and such the reviewer just bitch and bitches.

Lat to the party here. Good episode as always, Buccaneer death was really nicely done here also loved the eyecatch. Also, loved how Father walked to Ed and Izumi while Hohenheim was dangling there

Al constantly addresses Ed as brother in Japanese, so if he doesn't do so in the English version, complaints will still appear. It's a lose-lose situation.

Despite my low opinion about ANN as a whole, I actually found this a very good review. The writer does touch on a lot of complaints that many have made about the first part of Brotherhood (pace, music placement etc.) and also points to the good areas of the episodes (i.e she doesn't just ''bitch'' about it) and also devoted a paragraph just for the dub, though I could've done without the many comparisons to the first anime.

Patience is a virtue~

We don't even know if we'll ever find out ...

.. but honestly, if I hadn't already read the manga, I would have started NOW . A horrible lose-lose situation with two of my absolute favorites, too cruel. My respect to everyone holding out :P

I enjoyed this episode. It felt like to me that Greedling's awesomeness was cut short a bit, and Ran Fan had the bare minimum showing. Minor complaints, though... I think FMA has really stepped up to its predecessor and made the shounen genre watchable for me again.

Oh come on they only have to wait a week, we had to wait a month

Although I admit the threat of spoilers is obviously worse for anime only viewers.

Okay so you are saying it was a translation error. Well that is what I was hoping. Thanks!
