It seems to be a natural tendency of most manga if the anime appears while it is running. There's also a natural evolution to most author's drawing style as they improve.

It's probably a bit of both. The artist improves over time AND adapts to the anime style a bit more.

A good indication of the latter is when Kakifly started drawing Yui with her tights. For a while, that was an anime-only thing (and ironically, the reverse now seems to be happening, though that could be just a summer thing).

Just as a reminder to folks, the K-On! manga collection has been licensed by Yen Press. The first volume is due out December 2010 and the second is due out March 2011.

http://yenpress.us/k-on-by-kakifly/

Yen Press is licensing some really profit-risky manga and light novels so please show them support if you like the series.

It's usually the other way around, where the anime follows the manga. K-On! isn't an exception to this (after all, some of the episodes are an amalgamation of several short manga "stories"), but they did dabble in some completely original material not found in the manga.

Well, the anime follows the manga. Although the chapters are so short that plenty is added to the anime. The latest episode is a good example, where virtually every line from the manga is used, but then they added the scenes with Azusa's dreams and the festival at the end to get it to full length.

My updated index of manga chapters and how they break into anime episodes:

Aye.... just to be explicit, the 4-koma comic (from the magazine it appears in) is the SOURCE material for everything. It is being collected into manga volumes (3 so far) in Japan. There are scanlations "out there on the Net" and Yen Press is starting their licensed english-translation manga this fall. The anime production is an adaptation of the manga. The anime sometimes adjusts the gags for story flow and, of course, has provided us with a fair amount of anime-only new story bits with the input of the author of the manga. There's a few little bits from the manga which did not get into the anime adaptation.

I use the term "anime-only" when the author is involved or the writing staff has actually produced something worthy of the source... the term "filler" is more derogatory and usually applied to non-source anime adaptation that does not enhance or progress the storyline.

Yup, but I would rather say that both FMA and K-ON! pulled a Toradora!. ^^

It seems as if these things are getting more and more common lately. I hope it's a trend that's here to stay as I have grown tired of the lame "the source material i still running so nothing is concluded and no one knows if there will be another season" kind of endings.

Not that K-ON! would be a show that would really suffer from that, just stating my general opinion on the matter.

Oh no! Ritsu's plucked Mio's strawberry again - hit her Mio~

It does look like kakifly and Kyoani are planning for a finish frankly by September.

That's... damn sad. I was really looking forward to seeing the girls in college. It'll also waste all of kyoani's set-up for the second generation of the Light Music Club. Not to mention the most epic ending I can see for the K-On would be Hokago Tea Time rocking up Budokan.

It's strange, really, that if a very plot driven show I like is ending, I get excited. But when a character driven show like K-On is ending leaves me depressed for days.

Ray of hope: there's a question mark after the words Last Live. Please let this just be a misdirection trick by Kakifly.

Sooner or later, they'll have a last live event in high school and that will be that. What they'll do as a band post-high school is another story.

Unfortunately the question marks doesn't go over the live itself but, roughly translated,

Their last live, will it be a success?

Only chance would be that it means that it is the last concert of their high school, as the opening statement goes...

"At least we meet the last school festival of their high school years life..."

Relax, there's no need to panic.

This is just an advertisement for the volume 4 of the manga and it talks about their last high school festival which had their last concert (of high school) and Romeo and Juliet play. All of that has already happened (in the fall) and right now it's winter in K-ON! manga world.

This is nothing new for those of us who follow the latest scanlated chapters. There's no indication on that page that the manga ends.

well... it could ALSO mean that after they graduate, a new series is starting up pertaining to their college years. Something tells me this is too profitable a vehicle to just end.

HTT: the college years.

Hopefully, that's true or I will weep like its the ending of Azumanga Daioh again.

EDIT: Upon rereading the manga: the website of the university there're entering. I don't know how the fact that its a real university affects the odds of the ending coming though.
EDIT2: pics
