Kanon (2006) - I suggest it because you do not say anywhere in your post "I've seen Kanon BTW" ...that's how similar they are.

I second Kanon(2006). It's done by the same studio and produced by the same people.
I also recommend the other great animes done by Kyoto Animation. Which are AIR(tv) and Haruhi Suzumiya After you have seen those, Angel Beats done by Key and P.A Works, might also be a good choice for you. |

Hmm ... dunno if Haruhi and Angel Beats fits the bill as much (although I enjoyed both of them a lot) - could be wrong though.
Anyway - I will third Kanon 2006 and second Air. If you are looking for character development and sadness you might try a much older anime: "A Little Princess Sara". World Masterpiece Theater anime are definitely not to everyone's tastes though. Maybe also try White Angel and True Tears? Currently airing Ano Hana also might be your cup of tea.

Agreed 100% about the ending. It was a stunning adaptation of the light novel volume! (Of course, the relationship between Kyon and Nagato is my fave element of the novels, and, after all, every frog praises their own swamp and all....)

If its a movie, can you tell me where I can watch it? And I haven't watched Kanon or Air yet, so I'll make sure too ) thank you for all the suggestions. I'll probably end up watching them all

Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi is originally the title of one of the light novels of Suzumiya Haruhi fame, and it was made into a movie last year.

There was a Blue-Ray release in Japan last December(DVD as well). The English dubbed version is going to premiere at Anime Expo in a few weeks, so it could be on DVD(I think it's going to be released as a DVD/Blue-Ray combo) in August or September.
Disappearance is a great light novel and the movie has the same animation quality as the first season. And the movie really shows character development on Kyon's part(as well as someone else but that would be getting into spoilers). |

Ummm...yeah only about five or six people mentioned Kanon so far so yes I would say that it may be what your looking for (hint at sarcasm). Just watch the 2006 version, the 2002 version isn't as close to Clannad as '06 is.
