Kanata no Astra (Astra Lost in Space)

Manga 'Kanata no Astra' (Astra Lost in Space) is getting a TV anime adaptation. Studio will be Lerche.

Plot Summary
Quote:
The year is 2061, when space travel is now possible and commercially viable, and the students of Caird High School embark on their Planet Camp.

But soon after Group B5 arrived at their planetary camp site, a mysterious and unforeseen sentient light sphere warps its 9 members into outer space, stranding them 5012 light years away from their home planet.

With the discovery of an old, unmanned spaceship nearby, the students must stay strong, manage their limited resources and remain united in the darkness of space, so that all of them can survive their long and likely perilous trek back home aboard the Astra.

I've noticed Shinohara Kenta hasn't made any new manga titles ever since he ended Astra. Has there been any news on what happened with him? Is he on extended break, got a new job, etc.

First episode was pretty awesome. I'm not yet sure if it will be THE anime of a season for me, with Vinland Saga airing in this season as well, but it's definetely on of the contenders.

As a fan of the manga series, I thought this was a really strong start for the anime. I really liked the style they used for introducing the cast and overall world, and looking forward to see how the series goes from here.

He's in the process of planning a new series, according to what he said at the end of 2018. I guess he's still in the planning phase, so we won't be getting news until he's close to done.

Mind, the gap between Sket Dance ending and the start of Astra shows these things take time in any case.

That was a great start. And the episode length did allow me to get a feel for the various members of the cast. It just felt right as far as first episodes go. They've been dropped into a pretty extreme situation, but have the tools to take themselves back home. It had a lot of nice moments from the cast uniting to save Aries to creating a plan to survive their situation and get home.

Definitely looking forward to seeing how things go from here. All sorts of potential for solid drama among the cast as their space adventure goes on.

I can't believe they changed the scene when Aries comes up with the idea of hopping through planets. They had Kanata come up with it in the anime. Why would they change that?

The times when Aries saves everyone with her unconventional ideas were my favorite parts of the manga and they ruined it.

I guess that does it. I'm not watching this travesty.

No. That's the one thing I was looking forward the most in the adaption. There's literally no point watching the show for me now.

I don't expect anyone else to feel the same way, but it's not an overreaction.

So you were looking forward to one scene only? Quite amusing.

No, it happens multiple times. Coming up with unconventional ideas that save everyone's butt is kinda Arie's "thing" in the manga.

The first episode was a pretty good start. The double-length helped establish the cast's personalities and hint at some conflicts down the line. Looking forward to seeing more.

Well, unless you have some crystal ball you won't know for sure that all these instances are changed as well. And if you have a crystal ball, please PM me the lottery numbers for this week.

Since they already changed the first time, I've no reasons to believe they wouldn't keep doing the same.

Look, you don't have to feel the same way. To begin with it's clear you don't read the manga. But from the point of view of a manga reader, it's a valid criticism.

Who knew touching a creepy looking sphere of unknown origins would be a bad idea?

I guess Luca is kind of Leeroy Jerkins of the group.

Well that was really nice, probably the first best of summer so far but tbf it's hardly saying anything at this stage when barely started. Still on it's own rights its good around on both a technical and narrative level, and its been a long time we had an honest-to-goodness space adventure.

EDIT: I do find it odd that no one considered using the rope again once Kanata and Aries got close to the ship. I would chalk up to being scared but they all came out made a human rope...

That's another change they did. In the manga they used the rope, as it should be.

From this episode I get the feeling the director is one of those who likes to make changes just for the sake of making changes, without caring if they make sense or not. It's not a good sign.
