without spoils, what's the story here? I thought the arcs were pretty good. How far did they take liberties with the story?

I heard they just cut a lot of things. But LN readers will probably have more to say.

I heard it was a case of not adapting stuff well and changing character relationships or outright replacing characters in certain scenes.

The producers were Horikita fanboys who replaced the actions of other girls and instead gave those scenes to her when originally she wasn’t as involved. Some scene including a girl who would gain prominence in the story

Mainly two problems.

Like said above, there is a scene that should happen in a later volume that was adapted like some filler in the anime and the scene had Horikita instead of the girl that will become a really important character later on. Thankfully, it should be possible to fix that by just redoing the scene in the proper timeline (it's two volumes after where the anime ended)

The other problem, which for me is the bigger one, because not as easy to fix, is that they changed Ichinose's involvement in Sudou's violence case. In the LN, it's clearly said that any proof provided by someone from the same class as Sudou wouldn't work to cover for him (so Airi's pic and her testimony didn't work, because she was in class D too), so Ayanokouji had to get closer to Ichinose (from class B) for his plan, which made her interested in him and is important for the rest of the story. But in the anime, he doesn't get her help (so she doesn't have a real reason to be interested in him), and he gets help from Horikita, which is a huge contradiction as she's also from class D, so her testimony should have been ignored.

There are some other little things, but these two are the main ones in my opinion.

I wonder if they made those changes because they did not anticipate a 2nd season, and wanted to double down on its main female protagonist rather than delve into other characters that would have no immediate significance(or at least wouldn't appear to have none) before the end of the season? I don't see anything inherently wrong with it as an anime-only viewer, but I could see how not having everyone get their time to shine in the source material could be a disappointing thing to experience and seen as a disrespect to the source material =0<.

That sounds like a major change, but the important part is that Ichinose got involved with him right? Although I can't readily recall the "why" she would be into him(its been quite a while since I watched the anime, and that reason might not actually exist), I do seem to remember her being interested in him by the end; or at least showing more-than-usual interest in him over other classmates. Or is it that the weight of the "like" is not as strong in the LN and thus won't have the same impact in future events? Well they could just change things outright(which doesn't usually pan out well in these sorts of stories =0(...).

It's more about the "why". In the anime, she has no real reason to start being interested in him, compared to the LN, so it feels cheap in my opinion.

They really went all out there. Didn't expect to see a season 3 line up after season 2. Plus with all the pv shown, they are trying to animate first year arc. I saw bagumo there >_> no winter though.

We went from not having confirmation of season 2 to getting confirmation of season 3 before season 2 aired. COTE fans are being spoiled. Let's just hope they can find a satisfying pace.
