Post Old Computer, Money Cache

Imagine this: your computer is getting old, doesn't play the newest games, it's monitors is quite crappy, and it has no sound or any gadgets. Then imagine you get a lucky number 7 and find some cash -enough to buy one thing and one thing only of the following:

a) A new, sleek monitor. No more eye-strain and it looks good too. Workers choise.
b) New hardware. Games start running smoooth at full settings. Gamers choise.
c) New gadgets, like DVD-writer, microphone, surround sound, USB-thingies. Several small things to make life easier. Toolman's choise.

So which one would you take: a, b, or c?

I'd go for the sleek new monitor.

I don't play enough games to need the fancy hardware nor do I care for tonnes of gadgets and do-hickies. So a nice monitor that easy to look at would be nice.

Definatelly hardware : I wanna have a smooth running computer which can play anime smoothly and allow me to play games without problems. A new monitor wouldn't be that much of a problem, I just hook the PC up to the TV to see my anime .

Gadgets : All I need is a good cdburner/dvdwriter

So that is saying you won around 100,000 yen.

For 100,000 yen I can build a decent computer.

case: 3,000 yen
MB(onboard video & sound) & CPU: 30,000 yen
HD: 8,000 yen x 2
DVD+/-R: 10,000 yen
Monitor: 30,000 yen

I'd go for the monitor. New 20" Apple Cinema Display... Mmmm. Yummy. And it'd match my PowerBook beautifully.

Just wish I had. But no, seriously; this is a topic to see what people value the most, if they had "nothing" and had a chance buy one thing only. I would go with the monitor, now that I seen the difference between a lightbulb and a TFT.

So... uh... how much is 1 yen in euros or dollars...? Been wondering this for a while...

Oh, I'm sorry.

Okay, taking that situation under consideration...

Probably hardware. That is of course, your computer still is capable of handling those new hardwares...

Although, if a computer is old enough those hardwares may not be able to work on your computer...say for instance - I've never heard of an ISA board GeForceFX.

It depends on how bad the hardware is, but I'd probably go with the monitor. I use my computer mostly for work and rarely for games (although a few years ago I must admit the opposite was quite true). Deskspace is very valueable to me, and a nice new LCD monitor to replace a rickity old CRT one would be very nice.

In the worst case I'd do as kj suggested and buy a new computer with that money, and turn any old computers I have into a Linux cluster

I agree, depends on how old is the computer. For a typical family... I'd just upgrade the monitor and give it to dad/mom/young kids for a web surfing/ms office terminal. LCD is a must.

If it's yourself... I'd save up $1500 and get yourself a fully loaded Mac/PC. Personally, I'm itching to throw out my old server and replace it with a PentiumM micro-itx server. Pity, I need $1,000 to build it.

if the video card is old, having a new monitor wont mean less strain
cause it will still be at a low refresh rate

best isa board i think is the voodoo 4500?
not sure...

I just built my "ultimate" PC. version 2 (version 1 was taken to my GF house)
All the parts were purchased on a trip to Taiwan (TW) and Tokyo (JP).

$900 USD

P4-3.4 HTT (JP)
512MB RAM (TW)
200GB HD (TW)
ATI 9800 Pro (JP)
19" Mitsubishi LCD (TW)
Mid-tower 800Mhz FSB w/430watts PS (TW)
NIC - 1 Gbit

BTW, I compared the price from what I purchased in Asia to the USA, I think I saved myself ~$50. I should have purchased everything in the USA to save myself a whole lot of pain carrying all this back home!!!

Definitely the hardware. I once brought a top of the line computer without any moniter, then proceed to use a somewhat crappy moniter with it.

Moniter. My choice.

Why would you want hardware for the games when they look like crap on your moniter anyways?

Why would you want sound/devices, moniter is crap so the dvd look bad anyways.
IMO, lol

Why want a monitor then, without the hardware, your monitor probably won't be as pretty as you want or used to its potential. I think all three choices rely on each other to have much benefit. Whats the point of a LCD or TFT if your PC can only dish out 640x480 and under 16 bit colors........need a graphics card to make it pretty (just an example)

-monitor can only be so pretty dependant of the hardware used
-hardware can only LOOK so pretty if the monitor is capable of displaying such
-as for gadgets, if your pc is crap that needs the above......gadgets won't work right -_-

But if i had a choice, hardware, more power ^_^

Well, what do you primarily use your computer for?!?!

That should give you a good idea of what to get. Personally I would go for a nice monitor since it won't become obsolete right away.

But a DVD Burner or a new hard drive might be nice for backing up anime and stuff.

That is true, and usually people buy them all in one package, but this time you don't have money for that -just for one of them.

It's kinda pity that polls aren't enabled...
