Old Computer, Money Cache
Imagine this: your computer is getting old, doesn't play the newest games, it's monitors is quite crappy, and it has no sound or any gadgets. Then imagine you get a lucky number 7 and find some cash -enough to buy one thing and one thing only of the following:
a) A new, sleek monitor. No more eye-strain and it looks good too. Workers choise. b) New hardware. Games start running smoooth at full settings. Gamers choise. c) New gadgets, like DVD-writer, microphone, surround sound, USB-thingies. Several small things to make life easier. Toolman's choise. So which one would you take: a, b, or c? |

Definatelly hardware : I wanna have a smooth running computer which can play anime smoothly and allow me to play games without problems. A new monitor wouldn't be that much of a problem, I just hook the PC up to the TV to see my anime .
Gadgets : All I need is a good cdburner/dvdwriter |

Just wish I had. But no, seriously; this is a topic to see what people value the most, if they had "nothing" and had a chance buy one thing only. I would go with the monitor, now that I seen the difference between a lightbulb and a TFT. So... uh... how much is 1 yen in euros or dollars...? Been wondering this for a while... |

Okay, taking that situation under consideration... Probably hardware. That is of course, your computer still is capable of handling those new hardwares... Although, if a computer is old enough those hardwares may not be able to work on your computer...say for instance - I've never heard of an ISA board GeForceFX. |

It depends on how bad the hardware is, but I'd probably go with the monitor. I use my computer mostly for work and rarely for games (although a few years ago I must admit the opposite was quite true). Deskspace is very valueable to me, and a nice new LCD monitor to replace a rickity old CRT one would be very nice.
In the worst case I'd do as kj suggested and buy a new computer with that money, and turn any old computers I have into a Linux cluster |

I agree, depends on how old is the computer. For a typical family... I'd just upgrade the monitor and give it to dad/mom/young kids for a web surfing/ms office terminal. LCD is a must.
If it's yourself... I'd save up $1500 and get yourself a fully loaded Mac/PC. Personally, I'm itching to throw out my old server and replace it with a PentiumM micro-itx server. Pity, I need $1,000 to build it. |

I just built my "ultimate" PC. version 2 (version 1 was taken to my GF house)
All the parts were purchased on a trip to Taiwan (TW) and Tokyo (JP). $900 USD P4-3.4 HTT (JP) 512MB RAM (TW) 200GB HD (TW) ATI 9800 Pro (JP) 19" Mitsubishi LCD (TW) Mid-tower 800Mhz FSB w/430watts PS (TW) NIC - 1 Gbit BTW, I compared the price from what I purchased in Asia to the USA, I think I saved myself ~$50. I should have purchased everything in the USA to save myself a whole lot of pain carrying all this back home!!! ________ BUY VOLCANO VAPORIZER Last edited by AnimeOni; 2011-03-05 at 11:26. |

-monitor can only be so pretty dependant of the hardware used -hardware can only LOOK so pretty if the monitor is capable of displaying such -as for gadgets, if your pc is crap that needs the above......gadgets won't work right -_- But if i had a choice, hardware, more power ^_^ |

Well, what do you primarily use your computer for?!?!
That should give you a good idea of what to get. Personally I would go for a nice monitor since it won't become obsolete right away. But a DVD Burner or a new hard drive might be nice for backing up anime and stuff. |
