Its always been my understanding that Torri was pretty much like a gundam, and I always thought that he could take air in his body and use it as a thruster, like a gundam uses fuel as a thruster,

Exactly, I have trouble seeing how a bird made of metal can flap its wings and fly anyway. There's probably a propulsion system included or something.
