Anime for the more mature
Hi, I'm looking for some good anime that fit my tastes.
Likes: Mushishi (!) Melody of Oblivion Honey& Clover Genshiken Beyond the Clouds School Rumble Suzumiya Haruhi Ergo Proxy Fate-Stay Night Full Metal Alchemist Samurai Champloo Touch Initial D Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Trigun Dislikes: Naruto (speaks for itself) Bleach Mai-Hime Eureka Seven annoyed me to bits. I watched up to 20ish where I reached a point where all the crying and the emo got to me. It could've been a great anime if not for that. Suzuka, the boy is annoying. Way too emo. Peach Girl Da Capo Shuffle! Okusama wa Joshikosei Girls Bravo (I don't like any harem anime. The only one I could stand was Love Hina) All in all, no anime where the lead is a little kid. No magical girls (whatever that means). They're annoying. I don't like fanservice, either. Exceptions are movies like Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. I prefer mature leads like Mushishi, Initial D, School Rumble. Thanks in advance

Ah! I think you'd probably like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex has more or less a similar story to Ergo Proxy (although we're debating in the EP thread because I think EP has become ordinary in the past few episodes). In my opinion, I even think SAC has a more solid story (so far, after eight episodes of EP). After this is 2nd GIG, a continuation of the first series.

Check out:
Haibane Renmei Seikai no Monshou Juuni Kokuki - a TON of character development, especially on the part of the protagonist. She starts out a lost little girl and becomes very mature. |

It isn't really like any other anime I can think of, but Monster is an excellent and intelligent anime.
Ghost in the Shell is great, Ergo Proxy is the most similar to it on the list you gave. The two series are much more viewer friendly than the movies - the first movie is densely intellectual and the second movie is lacking substance, so you'd probably be better off starting with the series (Stand Alone Complex). I loved the first movie, but I know several people who disliked it and still liked the tv series. Cowboy Bebop is similar to Samurai Champloo, you might like that as well. Instead of Hip-hop like in SC, it uses a jazz motif. Reruns of it are still played during [Adult Swim] on Cartoon Network. |

If you like Mushishi, Kino no Tabi is a MUST. Get it now! You won't regret it.
I'll throw in a second vote for Monster. Great, Great stuff. And if you are into manga, check out the authors other works (Urasawa Naoki). His works after Monster are all masterpieces. And for a currently airing series, Higarushi no Naku Koro Ni looks promising. Don't let the elementary looking school kids fool you, this is some freaky stuff. Just check out the first few seconds of the first episode for a teaser Thats all I can think of for now, enjoy |

+1 Juuni Kokuki
+1 Berserk Let's see, more mature lead roles/anime series. Witch Hunter Robin Monster Beck Great Teacher Onizuka Gungrave Hitsuji no Uta Now and then, here and there (young lead, but extremely mature) Speed Grapher Wolf's Rain That's basically what I picked up after traversing my list once. I think you'd enjoy all of those a lot. Edit: All the series listed are completed. |

Shingetsutan Tsukihime- same set with Fate/Stay night. Its a vampire show.
xxxholic- similar with mushishi that deals with weird stuff but its comedy Kachou Ouji - aka Black Heaven. Its sci-fi drama. i am quite sure that both male and female lead are adult. |

In terms of complex, adult storylines - REC actually scores pretty well as does Honey&Clover. Nana is a possibility but too early to tell. "Mature themes" usually unfortunately is misused to mean juvenile level T&A, sex, or ultra-violence substituting for plot --- instead of like how CSI in Las Vegas is often more mature than, say, "Vegas", most so-called comedy on prime time, or any of those mind-numbing survival shows. So when I use "mature" I mean -- shows that real adults tend to enjoy. Most of the known grownups I know of on this forum liked Lamune - its not about grownups but a fairly subtle mature show. Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora did well with mature themes. There's a number of "good for a lot of ages" that adults can have fun with but I suppose we're sticking to stuff "grownups" can enjoy. I'd actually mention Utawarerumono as a possibility because of the themes but also too early to tell (thought there's been a fair amount of the consequence of violence and adult conversation, it also has a "cute factor" that disguises it). GITS is an obvious one as well as Gunslinger Girls .. combining violence with some fairly complex philosophies and ambiguous moralities..
