Texhnolyze and Berserk are the darkest animes I can think of. They're very different genres, with Texhnolyze being cyberpunk and Berserk being fantasy. Texhnolyze is unrelentingly violent and depressing.

Edit: I should say that Texhnolyze is more of a cerebral type of anime, whereas Berserk is fairly straight-forward. The violence is not the point of Texhnolyze, but it serves to illustrate the world.

the bloodiest anime ever: Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied is one of the best animes ever. I suggest you watch it.

Alien Nine and Narutaru are pretty dark and almost psychotic, but one of my favorite brutal anime is Blue Gender.

You know I agree with all the suggestions above. I haven't watched Blue Gender yet, but I will do so immediately. I hope it resembles something like Hellsing because I love that series.
I hope you watch that anime or read the manga, it is dark and gory, and very mysterious. Let me know if you like it!

Oh and playing off of this thread:
Does anyone know of other anime that resemble Hellsing or Vampire Hunter D?
Please let me know. I can't wait for your reply....

I am trying to get blue gender as well but nobody seems to be seeding it...
I started watching Bezserk and am loving it so far. seems kinda dated but it is very solid...

You might want to look into Serial Experiments Lain, some might say that its a mindf**k, and they'd be right; but its still an amazing anime.

If you want to lose your own meaning of life, watch Evangeleon.... If not, I suggest Blue Gender to be the best out of the dark animes already suggested... Definitely a sad anime, which really makes you think of the future!! Heh, that's all I got.

I definately need to get caught on some of these titles. I have watched some of them (S.E. Lain, Noir, Akira, and others mentioned above) but others seem completly foreign.
Would anyone let me know what Blue Gender is about? It sounds interesting.

It was okay... lots of alien bugs being killed as the protagonist and the soldier girl he met right after waking up make their way across a war ravaged world... I remember not liking it all that much, but it kept my interest just enough for me to finish it.

I have seen Noir and paranoia agent... Noir is pretty good and paranoia agent is hilarious to me...

I am watching Beserk and am gonna try out Lain, Monster and Blue Gender (if i can actually find someone to seed it).
