What girls have that moe factor?

Obviously, there are many different standards of "moe-ness"... but as for me, it takes more than a cute face, little pet phrases, and funny poses to register high on the moe-meter - I prefer girls that are also capable, useful, charismatic, and creative. With that in mind, I have my personal (biased) list:

Candy White (Candy Candy): A hero to young girls everywhere; intelligent, capable, and loyal. A bit of a tomboy but has that feminine side. The ideal tsundere, perhaps?

Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables): Bright, active, and cheerful. Candy's heir apparent.

Heidi (Girl of the Alps): Candy's predecessor? Yet another influential young girl.

Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy (Little Women): Hard to choose just one. Loved their approach to life.

That's exactly the point... it would be interesting to see how everyone's tastes differ.

Asuka for the Tsundere and Red head factors.

Katagiri Himeko and Takino Tomo for the Tennen Boke factor.

And anyone in an Eroge that is your childhood friend.

[Edit] Oh Sawachika Eri too! Tsundere there too.

Sumika Kagami - Muvluv (Akane Maniax if it has to be an anime)
Yuki Nagato - Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
Jun Watarase - Happiness

Most childhood friends and younger sisters.

And Ai from Lost child, but that's an eroge.

Edit: Forgot to mention Al Azif...

Al Azif, no question. She just has about every deciding factor. They are (for me) design, behaviour and (when available) voice. Actually, most of the grimoires in Demonbane match my preferences pretty good. Guess I have a thing for Niθ's design.

Others (a good shared second place) would be Haduki (Tsukuyomi), Rebecca Miyamoto (PPD) and I also have something for evil lolis like Yuka (GSS) and Ibuki (Happiness!)

Spoiler for Images:

I heard and see many anime mentioned about moe but I still don't understand the true meaning of moe. I even tried to search for it in wikipedia but it explained as "Master Of Entertainment". Can someone kind enough to explain it?

Fate, Hayate, Nanoha from Nanoha series
Karen from School Rumble series
Mikuru, Yuki from HaruMiya
Haruhi from Ouran

Err, can only think of that now. I'll update it later.

Miyuki Rokujou from Strawberry Panic. Eh, can't really say why... I just want to hug her everytime Shizuma is mean. And I think she cuter than all the other SutoPani girls.
(Especially the "only a joke" scene in episode 21.. moemoesu~)
Tamao-chan also ranks quite high.

Tsuruya-san from SHNY~ she's just hilarious, and meidoo~

Alicia Florence from ARIA. I just love her onee-sama attitude. And I love "Ara, ara~"!
Therefor I also feel very moe~ for Shizuru Fujino from Mai-HiME. I mean, if you see her blush.. Aww.

Yuki Nagato from SHNY, because of that infamous scene in the novel.. 99% tsun, 1% dere = kills.

Miyo(ko) Takano from Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - without words.
I also feel very moe for the other Higurashi-girls (Rika-chan, Satoko-chan, Shi-chan, Rena~ and Mi-chan.)

Ahh, I forgot about Kawasumi Mai from Kanon!

Blue-haired moe?
Yes, very colourful post. And of course they're not all characters that are moe~ to me..

Why, of course.

I have a nice....big.. list.. which I'll edit in when I'm bored.

Moe is the feeling you get, that makes you wanna hug them and comfort them etc though. Usually capable girls aren't seen as Moe right off the bat, but rather through their actions/emotions which shows that they too need comfort and warmth.

I'd describe moe as the person that literally makes your heart melt... and brings out your protective instincts.

Gotta agree with you there. She also has the tsundere factor going down for her which gives her more moe points fro me.

Now, my moe list is pretty flipping huge - so for now i'll just mention a few. :3

Nayuki (Kanon)
Misaki (NHK ni Youkoso! Manga)
Saber (F/SN)
Misuzu (Air)
Becky (PPD)
Sakura (Da Capo)
Primula (Shuffle!)
Aruru (Utawarerumono)

I really have yet to see any character surpass Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura) for my personal definition of "moe".

Mind you, that's just counting "moe", and nothing else. (My favourite character from that series is Tomoyo, not Sakura.)

There is a good discussion of the topic, in full detail, in the SaiMoe Tournament thread, starting at this post. There are also links there to excellent posts by kj1980 and others in the Tsukuyomi thread in 2004.

For myself, I like the Akamatsu Ken definition. I believe the term originally meant a girl who makes you want to go "ohhh" and fold her up in your arms and protect her, in a not-necessarily-sexual way. But in the SaiMoe tournament, and even in this thread, I think it has simply come to mean "turns me on." Not that there is any objective criterion for moe, though, since the word really does refer to the reaction in the observer.

For me, some super-moe characters are Petoko in Petopeto-san, Ichika in Uta~Kata, Nana-chan in Bokura ga Ita, Ana in Ichigo Mashimaro, Ayu and Nayuki in Kanon, Misuzu in Air, Yurie in Kamichu, Mikuru in SHnY.... None of the contestants remaining in the SaiMoe tournament do it for me: no-one from Nanoha, no-one from F/SN, no-one from Rozen Maiden.

And I don't see any reason to limit the term to girls. I can see the argument for Mizuho in Otome wa Boku ni Koi Shiteru. And maybe Mamoru-kun is moe to Ayako. Jun is really attractive in Happiness, but I'm not sure if s/he's moe. Hazumu in Kashimashi has really become a girl, but even if you thought of him/her as a boy, s/he would still be moe.
