Nvidia Geforce 8600GS?

Would it be safe to assume that the graphics card on this laptop has 512 although it only states to have 256MB?
According to the website the max memory is 512mb.

No it would not be safe to assume it has 512 vid memory. 512 is the MAX not the standard. That laptop has 256mb of dedicated video memory.

it has 256mb dedicated ram for the graphic card and it can use up to an additional 256mb of your system ram.

Unless it specifically states turbo cache it does not take memory dedicated from the ram. 512mb max memory simply means that a manufacturer can choose to put up to 512mb memory on the graphics card. Asus has chosen 256mb.

I'll probably repeat everything they said, plus the common sense that 512MB of video RAM on a good card would be asking you for $250-300.

No, it is false claim. Most games do not use shared memory, thus it is simply nothing more than 256 mb (so completely ignore any shared thingy, look dedicated only.)

And I also recommend to buy laptop with 8600GT, not GS. The laptop you choose is one of the budget series of Asus btw (still better than dell or hp anyway )

You need to go www.notebookreview.com and go to the forum. Go to the gaming section and ask experts, they can answer your question better than me. My explanation would be not good enough....

Hypermemory, turbo cache and similar stuffs, honestly say, nothing more than lying IMO.
