Vancouver Olympics, 2010
Now that the Bejing Summer Games are behind us, it's time to turn half way around the world, to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the next Winter Olympics are to be hosted. This is the first time the province of British Columbia has hosted the Olympics, but the third time overall for Canada (once in Calgary, and the other in Montreal.
The Winter Games of 2010 have been a big thing for people around the province, and everyone is ready for the Games to begin Feburary 12, 2010. I'm excited for these games, because they are hosting it in my city. Too bad I'm not old enough to volunteer though... I think I might watch the mens hockey team live, or maybe figure skating too. Then I don't have to go up to Whistler and risk being trapped there. Official Website: http://www.vancouver2010.com/

Must make a big note to avoid Vancouver (a lovely place) in 2010....
Besides, that's when Jupiter is due to become a star and make our solar system a binary star system

That being said, I have my tickets to the Vancouver Games (in the A sections, of course) and am eagerly awaiting the various ice skating competitions (from figure skating, to Hokey ). |

Sorry, I misspoke, I meant to say that I have placed the money aside specifically for the Tickets, which will be sold starting this October-November. The Tickets are set-up as a lottery, of sorts, were you ask to be placed in the lottery for the specific games you wish to see (you sign up for packages or specific gamese/events (as well as a ticket to the Opening and Closing ceremonies). Then, the lottery takes place in which you find out if you are going are not. This is Phase 1 of a 3 Phase plan for ticket sales, etc. Phase 2 begins the actually selling of remaining tickets, and Phase 3 sells the dregs. Since you are a resident of Canada, you will have a greater chance of securing tickets than I as a foreign citizen will not. I have to use the Jet Set Sports or CoSports to get tickets to the Vancouver Games.

So...the Vancouver City Gov't screwed up big time on the Olympic village issue. And I don't get two weeks off for the Olympics. *sigh*
I don't care, if someone I want to watch is on during school, I'm skipping! =D

I'm more worried about the 2010 Games than any of the Olympics Games since '88 - I've heard that the recession is making corporate sponsorship much less reliable, and that the organizers have had to scale back on some of the facilities. Admittedly, I'm not very read up on whether there's been much discernable effect on the Games, and I am aware that Western Canada has been less hard-hit than many places in the West, so I'd be grateful if anyone can give me pointers to some reliable information on this.
Other than that, I tend to be more fond of the Winter events than the Summer ones. The Summer events tend to be a lot more accessible and a lot more natural, but it's almost impossible to tell good technique from poor technique in most of the sports whereas it's very easy to do so with many of the Winter ones. Moreover, I find that there are a lot more close races in the longer disciplines like cross-country skiing and so forth.

As far as I know the main thing that's held up has been the olympic village. I havn't heard that much about the facilities that are hosting the events since that whole scandal with certain athletes complaining that they weren't allowed to use the new speed skating rink in Richmond. I'll take that as a very good sign that there hasn't been much hold-ups there. Costs for some of the facilities were higher than expected I do know that but nothing quite as severe as the Olympic village fiasco.
I was more worried about what the government was gonna do about Downtown Eastside because in its current condition that place is no good. It probably wont be as bad when the games do hit that city during such a cold time in the year. Last winter, a couple of homless people died from the cold (ok one of them died from being set on fire trying to warm himself with a fire) and that caused enough of a scare for many of the homeless to the point of getting most of them indoors. Right now tho police are actively arresting people for shooting up in public. I can already see protests happening over that dispute assuming they havn't already done so That sucks. I do hope the two weeks off willl still stick for many people driving to work otherwise traffic along the highway and the major bridges is going to be awful. |
