While true, none of those 4 were left anywhere near as open ended as Frontier was.

Of course, the real story is going to be down to Hiroyuki Yoshino, and he never fails to write endings that piss people off. Surely Ranka should fall in love with her non-existent father at some point...
I can see it now, people quote this post in 2010 and declare BluWacky a prophet! lol.

The possibility of it being a retelling exists but what are the chances for that? If Kawamori and co. want to earn money, and obviously they want, they won't go for a retelling. Unless they really want to waste a huge amount of money to produce something angry fans will not want to watch.

And also, creating an alternative version of Frontier? For what purpose exactly? So that fans will get pissed off at getting something they really didn't pay to see? They would have to create a new ending as well. Heck, they would have to create an actual ending

I don't see the point in continuing the story of Frontier, unless they suddenly shift gears from fighting Vajra to fighting another Zentradi strike fleet, which has been done to the death.

I suspect they will make a movie retelling the story in a different perspective. Hopefully, its not one of those cut n' paste movies, but a redrawn and redone production.

The only solid thing that hints at a "continuation" is Ranka and Sheryl's chorus at the end about this just being the beginning. But, the beginning of what? Is there any major plot point they didn't slam shut in between mech porn?

I think a compilation is probably a safer bet overall.

yeah, I don't think it's a continuation because if they did a continuation it will probably be all about the 3 characters --Alto, Sheryl, Ranka (Although, I would really like that) and more vf fighting unless there's another enemy for macross frontier. I guessing the movie is a compilation or an extended version of episode 25 (kinda like Gundam Seed Destiny Final).

viewing his works at movie is mainly a retelling with slight changes.. i won't hold my breath

basically, i want to see the triangle resolved. no need to guess which way i want it to go. and i wanna see more death. I expected at least 2 characters to get offed in the final episodes, but guess not. i mean, you take one of the more popular characters in Mikhail, but leave annoying a-holes that won't be named alive.

and yeah, more mecha-porn and great music. biggest shock would be like, "May'n will not be reprising her role as Sheryl." in which case this forum and japan would explode.

if done right, the movie would have better (though less) mecha porn, and probably better animation. hire Makoto Shinkai to do the backgrounds please.

and yeah, release date? i'm guessing late summer 09

I just hope it's not just another quick-re-summary of the entire series condensed into a movie. . . >.< I hate those.. sure the graphics/animations are spectacular.. but seriously.. I don't want a recap episode under the name of a "movie". I hope it's a continuation about their life on the new planet.

I'm guessing they'll tell us more about the movie during the Macross F concert or shortly thereafter. Unless they're forced to cancel it due to raging fans.

@Mai

Not yet, not even the information of the movie. I guess the next interview with Kawamori will explain what the movie is, recap or direct continuation.

Ah, I hope it's in November, cuz I'll be in Japan then and I can watch it in theaters! But I don't mind they release it earlier and we *somehow* get our hands on it here.

It might be something like DYRL, a recap movie with some new info and a clearer LT resolution. If it's a continuation, that's good too, though they'd have to find a villian more badass than Grace. But if it's purely a recap, I will personally join the parade of angry fans marching to Studio Nue for all of my heartaches and sleepless nights, for all my keyboard punching battling Ranka fans, for all MF and Macross products I own!

I don't think it will be out that fast, unless Kawamori really has something in his sleeves. Probably the fastest it would be released should be around mid-year of 2009, should he worked in this peoject by this time

I'm vouching for continuation-there are quite a lot of loose ends other than the triangle itself, most importantly for me Bilrer-Minmei connection. I'm sure a lot of us still wondering about some plot holes here and there. But recap movie with added new scenes would be awesome, as long as they give stronger hints on LT resolution. :/ And I do see you repelling Ranka's fans in CR That was quite a battle there

usooo... that long? kuyashii

Would think they'd release it earlier to put out the fires of angry fans. Besides, if they use digital animation and outsource some of it, it shouldn't take that long. I would think they had started working on it some time ago, right after they finished the series, since they decided to leave the series somewhat unresolved.

They should 80s style it. Take some of that awful colour out of the mechaporn and character designs. More grit. Grit is good. Grit is sexy. Kind of like the anime cutscene from one of the video games. Had some woman pilot who was hotter than anyone in Frontier simply from the sound of her voice.

I feel the pain. But satisfication is greater when we wait longer, right?

There is that probability, but I still can't bring that up. Doing two major projects would seem impossible to me, but it could be the reason why some of MF Episodes quality were crappy (e.g. Episode 19).

Since we really are lacking information for the movie, the only thing we can do is hope that Kawamori read the fans anticipation now and decide to follow the ride by giving out what the movie is in his next interview, which may be included in the next Animage/Newtype issue (there is one more magazine, but I forgot the name). Let's hope that he would give the release date range if possible.

Continuation or compilation, I don't really care as long as the LT is resolved. Speaking as a story writer, there is absolutely no point in leaving a plot thread unresolved unless you plan on tying it up later on.

To whoever proposed the movie following an entirely different cast: BURN!!!!

DYRL movie remake looks more and more possible actually. I don't think they are going to do a Macross Plus copy/remake/touch up. Though a Macross 7: Galaxy is Calling Me kind of addition might be possible which was just a side story.

Who knows at this point. We already know they are probably going to make Alto/Sheryl/Ranka the main characters again and they are going to smother to death the LT again and there is going to be lots of music. So it's pointing more and more to a DYRL but with modern animation, topics and characters.

*SHOORYUKEN!!!*

I just had a thought: the term "movie" is more flexible over there. Many "movies" in Japan are only thirty minutes long. The only thing that denotes them as movies is that they are shown in movie theaters. Most of the Digimon movies followed this routine and many other series have done the same. As someone in the romance thread pointed out, the "movie" really could just be episode 26, only with phenomenal production values and on a big screen with surround sound.
