I wouldn't expect a 'mature' B*S so soon. He claims he's becoming an adult, but this is the guy who's long been claim that he's a 'big man' and the like. Mifune's death may have had an effect on him, definitely, but I can imagine this isn't the end of Black Star's maturity issues, no matter how final the Mifune fight and Nakatsukasa situation appeared to make it.

Maka and the book...she seems to have heard about the Book of Eibon, but I suspect her reaction was down to Kid mentioning 'Eibon' during the Brew arc, and probably the same previous knowledge of the sorceror as a bad guy that Kid also had. If Kid didn't mention it to Shinigami, Maka now might. She has nothing like the same baggage when it comes to the god, and certainly wants to protect her friends.

Liz and Patti's lack of reaction could be because they've already had their reactions: getting upset and angry immediately after. Shinigami, however, has no such excuse for his apparent disinterest in his son's fate.

I wonder about Justin, now. How did he end up like this, and whether this is the insanity wavelength, or the real deal from him. Curiously, he does take the time to pray for forgiveness for the 'sins' he was about to commit, which could suggest some conscious understanding on his part. He also said it was in god's name, which is odd. Perhaps there's something in the idea that he thinks he's doing the right thing by Shinigami, his 'God'?

... He and Kidd have never rly been close, and theres a possibility he's never really acted as a father to him. How do we know, we haven't been given any backstory on the two, but im hoping that we'll get some eventually. I mean it took 56 chapters for Soul, the main character, to get some attention in that area.

Who knows, Shinigami-sama could be worried beyond heck, but hes the grim reaper so i'm sure he's learned to keep his head in the game when it comes to these kind of situations, even when his own son is in danger.

Regardless its still kind of heartbreaking to see everyone return to shibusen all so content while Kidd's location is who knows how far by now.

Keep in mind that Shinigami-sama is wearing a mask. Who's to say what his demeanor is like under there?

I sort of hate commenting without having seen scans, I have to throw out some thoughts about Shinigami...

Spoiler for THAT chapter:

Shini's not the most emotive character, in fact I'd think pretty much the opposite. He maintains that cheerful attitude for a reason and it might not be something he wants to break out of over something that he may feel is more personal and less about Shibusen. We have no idea or way of knowing what he is thinking privately.

Also, he may also have knowledge about the situation we don't, such as Kid's ability to survive. Shini may realize that while the situation may be a big deal, it isn't in terms of time and that there are other time-sensitive issues (normal humans are more perishable
He may just be able to hold faith in Kid and knows the kid'll be alright. We also don't know the limits of Shini's mirror, we just don't know what that dude knows and is choosing to withhold (as he frequently does). Clawing the walls isn't Shini's style.

From a craft POV, it does add some suspense by dragging it out and maybe surprised readers by not giving us the freak-out people either expected or wanted to have happen.

About the lack of reaction for Kid... I don't really mind that much, to be honest.

Was there any reaction at all when Stein vanished with Marie? When he collapsed in the BREW arc? Other than Spirit, I don't think anyone gave him a damn, both in the manga and in the real world. He's been gone for a freaking 18 or so chapters - so Kid fans, I think you can hold out for a few months? At least there's panels with him, from what I've heard, not like Stein, where his name was barely even mentioned. So I don't really have a problem with Kid for now.

But Justin's gone bad? That's huge. That's so... random. No hint at all, just like, BAM. I'm not particularly fond of such twists, but ah well. I just couldn't see it coming and I don't see what making Justin a larger character will achieve. I hope we get some answers soon. Was Justin bad from the beginning? Did he go mad? Was he influenced by the Kishin? ????

Of course, there's also the possibility that this is all JUST ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU and the situation with Kid is really a Good Thing in Disguise. Doesn't explain why the Thompsons aren't in perpetual hysterics, but...

Yes, they did actually, Spirt, Sid and Mira were all there when he and Maire left and Maka mentioned their leaving along with B*S and Crona. That said, I agree with JunkKitty about the Shingami hiding his reactions about Kid, he's never been a very forcoming person/being.

When Stein and Marie left, it was in order to find BJ's killer. Kidd was abducted by a psychotic more-than-likely pedophilic crazypants dominant on becoming "everything". I think there's a major difference with those situations and how characters would likely react to them.

It's not the fact that Kidd isn't appearing every chapter - its that the situation he has gotten himself into is unnerving and thats why its affecting a majority of the fans.

First off, the only thing we know about Noah is that he is a psychotic more-than-likely pedophilic crazypants dominant on becoming "everything". We don't know his plans, why he's doing it, what he is going to do with Kidd, etc. And if Kidd gets out of the book and is face to face with him, he's boned. He doesn't have Liz or Patti with him, he doesn't have the brew, he alone witnessed the guy squish Mosquito like a bug, who nearly killed him, in an eyeblink so there's no way he can take him on physically. That's why most people are in a ruckus about it, and most people are disappointed with how shinigami-sama is reacting to the situation, but i'm sure he's feeling a lot more worry than he lets on, though i can't make any definite judgement on that due to lack of backstory.

I guess i'm just a little more concerned then many cause i'm probably the only one mortally disturbed by the amount of NoahxKidd fanfics pouring out involving craploads of rape and torture. :x

Even though I haven't read or seen a part of it, I think I have an explanation for the twist in the new chapter.

Everyone believing Justin would be immune to the Kishin's influence is like how a lot of people would believe a person with a very clean life wouldn't get the flu. Because he was never exposed to madness in any form and the clean person never got a flu shot because the person believed getting sick would be impossible, one exposure and they both fall harder than one can imagine.

Yeah, it's been a few days since people started posting spoilers so I assumed that meant the RAW was out and this is also a series that gets scanlated pretty fast. It's in the same magazine as FMA, right? And that was out a few days ago, even though the fanbase for that one is even bigger...
The wait is killing me! And I like Elli's explanation for events-I-have-not-read-yet as well.

He didn't really claim to be an adult, but rather he said he grew a little, and in essence through his fight with Mifune he matured a lot. And we all know his big proclamations were projections of his own insecurities. You saw at the end of his duel, not a jokester, but a serious swordsman. Compared to his other encounters with Mifune, it was on a completely different level. Sure he'll prolly still make jokes infront of people because that's who he is, but I highly doubt he's going to go openly confront people like he was doing earlier in the series, and parading his winning streak/looking for fights. And the fact that he had a somewhat serious face when he says he's grown up a little, means he still knows he has a lot more room to grow, but he's gonna take it a step at a time, and not immediately say he's grown up completely.

I wouldn't say it's random, and it's not like it was an on the spot decision. We didn't know anything about him, except that he was the youngest death scythe without a technician. He's one of them we didn't expect to be evil, which makes the twist all the more surprising. And the introduction to the twist imo was good, with Stein making a comment about how he has to fight him.. and we're going "wtf" until we see him talking to giriko. I mean, the twist wasn't forced or unbelievable. I think it tied in beautifully to the whole story.

It's not just Justin who is becoming a larger character; rather, the death scythes. We got introduced to two in the previous chapter, and Marie got to show her stuff this chapter. I think the pacing is working pretty well, and the fact we have so many questions is a good thing. (makes us keep reading, haha)

I think the biggest question now are about the connections between Asura/Justin/Eibon/Medusa. How are these people connect, and what are their plans. Do their plans coincide, or will they interrupt each other? Like obviously I want to know about Justin's backstory, but.. there just so many.. questions.. haha

The thing I like most about this chapter is that they didn't drag it out, I thought the pacing was wonderful.

On the other hand, it is awesome to see Franken Stein and Mjolnir kicking ass.

That was a pretty big plot-twist there, it makes sense in a way, the person least expected to be affected by the Kishin is actually the worst one, thus the reason he is a double agent.

Great seeing Marie and Stein together though, Marie's abilities are pretty crazy.
