I'd disagree with that. I have many, many friends of the opposite sex and we're really close (Like Nanoha/Fate close) and we have no romantic interest whatsoever towards each other.

I think that when writing, you can't use any "standard" reasons for characters to like each other. The boy meets girl thing only works if there is a reason for sparks to fly. For example, Yuuno and Nanoha in season 1. They are so busy doing what they need that there is no time for anything to develop, be they young or not. There's no reason for it, despite them being opposite gender. Same for Nanoha and Fate. They're close friends but there was nothing driving them together to ignite any type of doubt in that relationship. Its like your best friend suddenly saying "I love you!" and you're all "wait, WHAT!?"

A good romance, in my opinion, has foundation and builds up to something. It has a moment where each person thinks about it and has a self discovery. My own works here, in Saved by the Bell, Fate takes a few chapters to go through denial about liking Nanoha until her mother spells it out for her. Then Nanoha goes through 15 chapters just trying to figure out the line between friendship and romance. If I had just simply had them meet and BAM there's a connection, I would have lost a lot of chances to build upon their feelings.

P.S- I also think "Love at first site" is another way of saying "that person is hot, I wanna have sex with them and not get their phone number"

Like I said, more then you'd think.

Horridly closeminded, it's the exact same thing. Feel free to do it (improbable pairings don't bug me in the slightest), but then don't call others out on it (pots calling kettles black and all). Everyone isn't attracted to everyone else, not all girls are attracted to all guys and I'm sure it's visa versa.

If your reason for pairing them (this applies to every pairing ever, girlxboy, girlxgirl, boyxboy) is, he's a guy she's a girl so obviously they want each other, maybe you should try to to think over that pairing and see what would make them actually work as a couple.

Well, I'm only saying what applies to me and what I think. Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to pass it off as a universal standard but that is not my intent.

I wasn't saying that since they're members of the opposite sex, they must be attracted to each other. It's definitely possible for members of the opposite sex to just be friends. It's just that I tend to think "straight unless otherwise specified", so if there's a guy and a girl who are close, it's easier for me to make the leap to them becoming a couple. If, say, Vivio was stated as being a lesbian, then I'd have a much easier time seeing her paired with Lutecia.

I'm only talking about my mental processes and the limitations thereof.

I don't hate you. I just got a little put off by what you were saying and the implications of it.

I'll admit that in general when you have two close friends who are a guy and a girl, it's easier for the majority to see them taking that next step into a romance. But times are changing, and now there are even more stories were two boys or two girls are best friends and end up falling in love. It doesn't make the step any less believable, but I get what you're saying from a straight, biological point of view.

It really doesn't help that we have absolutely no clue as to anyone's confirmed sexuality in MGLN, ignoring the massive amounts of shiptease with the major ships in the fandom. It also doesn't help that MGLN is severely lacking in available men, so in general I find it easier to pair Vivio off with, say, Lutecia because Cia is an established character in canon and we're never specifically told that Vivio isn't a lesbian, so the option is still there. Same goes with Lutecia: no one ever comes out and says "Oh, BTW, she likes women!", it's mostly just an assumption on my part that she could because we're never told otherwise.

In my "canon" fics of Nanoha, where they're not in an AU or on earth or so, I try not to mention the whole bi or lesbian thing simply for the fact that they are so advanced, I'm pretty sure that by then they would have worked out a lot of kinks of the human fskups, such as the whole 'gay people are different' and racism things. So by then its probably not batting an eye at if Vivio and Syn go to prom together.

I don't know about "on the rise"...I think that it's also because society now is more accepting of even the thought of homosexual relationships. Some people in the past may have attributed their occasional homoerotic thoughts to "it's just because I don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend" or "it's just this particular person", but nowadays being homosexual isn't a psychological disorder or a crime that could get you thrown in jail (in some countries, at least).

Hi, me again. I went off the grid due to a trio of extra-large papers due for finals, but I'm back for more assistance. MANY things to post, and seeking suggestions and comments for each of them.

Spoiler for Precia's Return, Nanoha's Fall, Fate's Fury:

First off, if you've been hangin' 'round in this thread for a while, you may remember my previously-posted pack 'o' plot-bunnies (powerful, purposeful punctuation) (this broadcast brought to you today by the letter "P"). One of my ideas, and the one that I've decided to try bringing back from the dead, was a fic where (copy/pasted from original post): Precia somehow came back at some point 5-7 months after the Book Of Darkness Incident, causing more trouble for the Nano-gang while looking for "a new, mysterious Lost Logia" that could revive Alicia. Precia had new "allies" in this (the Logia is one of a set; her allies want the others, in exchange for letting her keep the one she needs). At one point in the story, Nanoha takes a bad hit from one of the "allies" (his name here is "(REDACTED)", cause I never thought of a name) and plummets to the ground unconscious. She survives. However, Fate A) doesn't know that Nanoha survives, and B) thinks that Precia fired the shot that hit her. Thus, this happens:

Precia had seen the light fade from Fate's eyes. She'd sensed as Fate's mind became clouded and consumed by sorrow... which then transformed into the most powerful, blinding anger she'd ever felt. She'd seen as Fate's face twisted into a look of such all-encompassing rage that Precia had "almost" felt a slight twinge of nervousness and... fear?

Less than 30 seconds after that, Precia had felt as her strongest shield began to fracture and give way to the incessantly-pressing blade of golden energy, the yellow and violet light reflecting off Fate's dead-eyed, fangs-bared, fury-stricken face. She'd felt as the blade broke though, and then had felt the screaming pain across her midsection. She'd felt as her own blood began to flow freely from the large gash now across her stomach.

Precia had watched as Fate spun and the massive blade came around again. She had moved her head back as quickly as she could to avoid, but had still felt the slashing pain as the sword sliced across her face. She'd seen the blade come around yet again, and felt as it nearly hacked all the way through her leg. She'd watched as Fate brought her sword to swing down from overhead. Precia had felt herself pushed downward, and with her last several seconds of consciousness looked up as the sword struck (REDACTED)'s arm, slicing it clean off; she'd felt his blood spatter down on her, and seen the detached limb plummet to the ground below, before she lost consciousness.

Now, as Precia lay in a bed in her "allies" base's medical bay, she looked in the ceiling-mounted mirror; looked at the large, fresh scar that ran clear across her torso. Looked at the accompanying scar the marred her right cheek and part of her nose. Looked at where her leg had been put back together. And as she looked, she thought of her once-obedient little doll, the clone of her Alicia, and how she had changed when she'd thought that the white-clad girl had been killed by her. The former puppet had turned against her former master. The tool had struck at its wielder. Precia's mind focused on the one inescapable, undeniable fact:

Fate had tried to kill her.
And were it not for (REDACTED)'s interference, she would've succeeded.

I want to clear up a misconception made by a person who message'd me: Fate did NOT choose to spare Precia at the last moment. Fate was in the full grip of maddening rage and was genuinely trying to kill Precia at that point; Precia only survived because Mr.-Yet-To-Be-Named pushed her out of the way and into a portal to safety (losing his arm in the process). Also, something not in the original post: after Precia "escaped", Fate directed her semi-insane fury on Mr. No-Name, engaging him in battle... and killed him. Yes; our beloved caring Fate-chan was so consumed with anger and grief that she actually deliberately took someone's life.

From here, I am stumped on several things. What would Precia's thoughts be after coming to the unmistakable conclusion that Fate was trying to kill her, coming damn close to succeeding (and leaving Precia quite physically scarred in the process)? Would she feel shock? Fury? Fear? Sadness, inexplicably? Oh, and during the snapped moment, Fate mentions how she "met" Alicia in the Book of Darkness' dreamworld, and how she told Fate that Precia used to be kind, but then Fate says "Alicia was wrong! You are and always have been a monster!!" How would Precia react to that? I ask all this because it has proven too difficult for me to get a grasp on how Precia's mind works and thus how all this would affect her.

Also, as mentioned, Nanoha DID survive. However, what would make a better story: her being found alive by the TSAB soon after, or her remaining off the grid for some reason, leaving Fate to slip deeper into sorrow and desire for vengeance?

Second, another post from the previous mega-post of mine was my theory on the relation between Ki/Chakra and Magical Energy, and how Teana is affected by it:

In my fic 'verses, there are two types of "combat energy", internal and external. Internal is, of course, ki (you could also call it qi, chi, or chakra, depending on choice), drawn from the body's own energy stores and converted into combat-useful forces.

External energy, meanwhile, is Magic. Magic is ever-present in the universe as an ambient force that exists everywhere. A mage gathers this energy and uses it. It must first be channeled through the user's body (a Linker Core allows & assists in this channeling) before then being used in a combat-usable state.

Magic & Ki/Chakra are somewhat opposed; while a person can technically use both at once (say, using ki to fly, cling to walls, or stand on water, while casting magic with their hands or a device at the same time), combining the two (a skill known as “kanka”) is extremely difficult, and a large concentration of untamed/un-harnessed ki inside a person's body makes it difficult to channel any significant amount of magic. In my fic(s), Teana has a LARGE amount of natural ki that she was never taught how to use, thus allowing it to form a constant unfocused presence in her body, disrupting her ability to use any appreciable amount of magic without causing herself severe strain, and utterly incapable of reaching the levels of magic that Nanoha, Fate, & Hayate can. Proper training on how to access her ki/chakra would, in addition to rapidly establishing her as a powerful ki-user, also allow her to more easily channel/use large amounts of magical energy.

How can I make a fic where Teana does learn the training she needs to control and use for combat her ki/chakra, thus also becoming more capable at using higher-level magical techniques? And how can I make the fic good?

...Or is it doomed from the start? Has anything been stated anywhere in canon that contradicts my theory or even proves it dead/wrong?

Third is an idea for a new Barrier Jacker design by Teana. This following design is already in use in my previously-mentioned private my-eyes-only never-public mega-fic idea, where it fits well Teana's development into an Anti-Hero. (Type IV at first, later "softens up" to between Types II and III):
No more pigtails; hair hangs free
All parts of her BJ that were white in the old style are now red
All parts that were blue (the trim, basically) are now gold
All parts that were black are now a dark purple
The brown belts and silver buckle are gone
The skirt and stockings/leggings are replaced by pants (easier to fight in)
SIDE NOTE: Cross Mirage's plating has been changed from white to silver, and is now in Blazer Mode (Hand Cannon!) by default, unless in Longsword Mode (gun becomes hilt for meter-long double-edged sword of magical energy)

Whatcha think? Looks good on her? Remember: this is in my private fic, so no "suggestions"; just tell me if you think she'd look good in this.

Next is a question for anyone with military knowledge. Again, this is from the private fic, so now "that won't work as a story" comments because it's for my eyes only; I just like accuracy in my works. At one point, on a planet called Torus III, a series of incidents leaves Sergeant-Major Teana Lanstar (the Dimensional Defense Force has ultratech brain scanners that determine a recruit's level of leadership/commanding skills and assigns an appropriate rank, after which they work their way up from there; Teana was "scanned" after spending 4+ years in a temporal-displacement area for training (those inside don't physically age; every six months inside is one day outside), explaining her newfound military skill)) the highest-ranking survivor out of about 300 troops, outnumbered 2:1 by superior enemy forces (Covenant Loyalists - Brutes & underlings - to be exact).

Teana proceeds to get all surviving forces (mostly humans, a few Sangheili/Elites) regrouped, and proceeds to give an epic, hot-blooded speech that gets everyone fired up and sends morale flying high (at some point it includes: "Are we gonna let them walk all over us like this?!" "NO!!" "Are we gonna let them get away with what they've done to us and to this planet?!" "NO!!" "Are we gonna kick their hairy asses from here back to whatever slimy mudball they call a homeworld?!" "YEAH!!!")

She proceeds to show unprecedented tactical skill, creating a series of incredibly daring, complex, and brilliant strategic maneuvers, combined with sheer hot-blooded leadership, to not only push the Brute forces' attack back but actually counter-strike and soon get the Brutes on the defensive, and then actually manage to overwhelm them! When the Shadow Of Intent arrives later to provide support, they are left with basically mop-up duty, as Tia's troops managed to take out about 75% of the enemy forces while losing only 17% of theirs, basically saving the planet (the Brutes were stranded as well, since when the DDF ship went down it took the Covvies' ship down with it, and the rest of the CL didn't know their soldiers were even there due to the power struggle going on amongst the Covenant leadership).

I don't wanna know if this would work for a story. What I wanna know is: what kind of 'rewards' would this incredible achievement net her? A commission to Lieutenant (and then, 1st or 2nd Lt.)? Would this be enough to qualify for a Medal Of Honor or UNSC Colonial Cross ("...highest award for UNSC military service, rewarded for singular acts of daring and devotion...")? Or would she get nothing more than a pat on the head and a "good job, soldier" from her superiors?

My last two things are not asking for help. They are a pair of funny scenes from my stories that I wanted to share. The first is from the aforementioned Torus Campaign, before the shit hit the fan. In this scene, a boat containing Teana, 'Marie', Ben Carmine (yes, him), Keiichi, Satoko, and two OCs, Pvt. Sean Kuzo (voiced by David Spade) & LCpl. Manfred Elderson (voiced by Ray Romano), has just passed through some rapids, successfully evading enemy pursuers. However...

Keiichi: "Well... that was fun... sorta..."
Kuzo: "Yeah, well I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting all funned out here"
Marie: [Looks ahead] "Uh-oh"
Teana: [deadpan] "Don't tell me. We're about to go over a huge waterfall"
Marie: "Yep"
Teana: [still deadpan] "Sharp rocks at the bottom?"
Marie: "Most likely"
Teana: "...Bring it on."
[They go over; of course, Kuzo going "BOO-YA-HA-HA-HA!!!"]
[They resurface, drenched and dazed; Satoko looks at the front of the boat, and starts struggling to hold in laughter at what she sees; Teana picks herself up, and notices a good-sized, wiggling fish half-stuck inside her mouth]
Teana: *spits fish out* "Oh God..." (she hates raw fish/sushi) "...Good thing I haven't eaten lunch yet"
Carmine: *picks up the fish* "...Want lunch?"
[Teana turns pale and leans over the edge of the boat, trying desperately not to throw up. Marie puts a hand on her back while glaring daggers at Carmine]
Carmine *brings to fish close to look at it* "(thinking aloud) I wonder how it would taste..."
[In response to hearing this, Teana starts to heave. The split-second before she loses her breakfast over the edge of the boat, the camera cuts to "10 Minutes Later" to fish fillets frying on a metal plate over a fire.]

A final little scene I cooked up doesn't even have any Nanoha characters in it, but is too funny/sad not to share. Earlier, on Higurashi-Earth, Satoko Houjou is a brave young girl, fighting on despite how deeply she misses her dear disappeared brother. However, she experiences one event, one terrible, traumatizing experience, that leaves her mentally scarred and temporarily leaves her incapable of coherent thought: a car-ride with Yukari Tanizaki. Yonkoma Format:

A string of Christmas lights were hanging from her side as she merrily stapled the cord to the house. In fact, we were both singing a small Christmas carol that was playing on the radio curtsy of Raising Heart -who now sported one red wing and one green wing in true holiday fashion. One thing about Christmas that I enjoy now that I was a teenager was that my eyes matched the holiday. Back when I was younger people would tease me about it, but now I really enjoy the fact I was 'christmasy' all the time now. Mama started climbing down the ladder and I moved out of her way so we could shift it over a few feet so she could go back up. After a playful curse to aunt Hayate about 'anti-flying laws', Nanoha-mama started climbing back up while I fed her the Christmas lights again.

I'll be honest, like I was when I reviewed PSVivio on ff.net before finding my way here - I really didn't like that fic. I understand the notion of wanting characters to be 'more realistic' so that it's easier to write them, but sometimes it simply kills the characters to do that. If you were to, say, write a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fic where the turtles had all been mysteriously turned into humans, abandoned (and forgotten) their ninja skills and gotten white-collar jobs, you're not writing TMNT fanfiction anymore: you're writing Office Space with four Italian-named office workers who hate the company shredder for some strange reason.

Putting them in real-world, 'realistic' situations is all well and good, but you have to remember the setting around them and their special abilities and take those into account. Otherwise you're effectively just writing an original novel that you can't publish because you went and used copyrighted names.

In my fic 'verses, there are two types of "combat energy", internal and external. Internal is, of course, ki (you could also call it qi, chi, or chakra, depending on choice), drawn from the body's own energy stores and converted into combat-useful forces.

External energy, meanwhile, is Magic. Magic is ever-present in the universe as an ambient force that exists everywhere. A mage gathers this energy and uses it. It must first be channeled through the user's body (a Linker Core allows & assists in this channeling) before then being used in a combat-usable state.

Magic & Ki/Chakra are somewhat opposed; while a person can technically use both at once (say, using ki to fly, cling to walls, or stand on water, while casting magic with their hands or a device at the same time), combining the two (a skill known as “kanka”) is extremely difficult, and a large concentration of untamed/un-harnessed ki inside a person's body makes it difficult to channel any significant amount of magic. In my fic(s), Teana has a LARGE amount of natural ki that she was never taught how to use, thus allowing it to form a constant unfocused presence in her body, disrupting her ability to use any appreciable amount of magic without causing herself severe strain, and utterly incapable of reaching the levels of magic that Nanoha, Fate, & Hayate can. Proper training on how to access her ki/chakra would, in addition to rapidly establishing her as a powerful ki-user, also allow her to more easily channel/use large amounts of magical energy.

How can I make a fic where Teana does learn the training she needs to control and use for combat her ki/chakra, thus also becoming more capable at using higher-level magical techniques? And how can I make the fic good?

...Or is it doomed from the start? Has anything been stated anywhere in canon that contradicts my theory or even proves it dead/wrong?

It's possible that Teana could teach herself how to use her ki. If she has enough to interfere with her magic usage, wouldn't it be pretty easy to detect? And once she's aware of it, it would just be a matter of getting used to the new source, since she's already used to channeling energy.

As for making the fic good... that burden falls entirely on you, I'm afraid . Any plot can be interesting as long as it's written well--just go for it.

Be careful not to overpower Teana, though. Giving a character a lot of power that she isn't known to have in canon can be dangerous. Good luck.

I understand the notion of wanting characters to be 'more realistic' so that it's easier to write them, but sometimes it simply kills the characters to do that. If you were to, say, write a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fic where the turtles had all been mysteriously turned into humans, abandoned (and forgotten) their ninja skills and gotten white-collar jobs, you're not writing TMNT fanfiction anymore: you're writing Office Space with four Italian-named office workers who hate the company shredder for some strange reason.

Putting them in real-world, 'realistic' situations is all well and good, but you have to remember the setting around them and their special abilities and take those into account. Otherwise you're effectively just writing an original novel that you can't publish because you went and used copyrighted names.
