It's tough, because to me, the decade was dominated by series that were important in the sense of being hugely popular or doing something bold and new (I'm thinking of Haruhi and Lucky Star) but aren't actually, well, my favorites.
Weighing both considerations, I'd have to say: 1) Haruhi 2) Kanon '06 3) Negima 4) School Rumble (it's just sort of, like, the ultimate "school" series; now can we have a new genre please) 5) Lucky Star |

Damn this is a really tough list since we have a lot of good anime this past ten years so let's see if I can pull it off:
And I could easilly go on to ten or twenty series, it's just been that great of a decade! PS: I purposefully left out stuff like FMA that are being redone or have sequels or episodes pending like Bakemonogatari and Hellsing Ultimate cause I don't think it would be fair to judge them as they stand now. PPS: Btw I've seen some people in this thread go back to the year 2000 for animes but I have to question a bit the common misconception of the word decade. Decade can in fact represent the last 10 years and as such anything from 2000 to today would be accepted but the proper use of the word when talking about the Gregorian calendar would mean that the current decade started at 2001 and ends at 2010 since year 0 didn't exist. Of course all of this is just to justify me not placing FLCL on the top spot :P

Out of what I've seen I suppose these would be my top 5
5.) Jyu Oh Sei 4.) Baccano! 3.) Hikaru no Go 2.) Full Metal Panic! 1.) Fullmetal Alchemist I made a much bigger list HERE if people care about that. It was kinda fun going back and remembering all the anime over the 2000-2009 years.

(Apologies for the shameless plug, but seeing as how I'm not the only one...)
I've also had a crack at putting together a top 50 list. My top 5 went like this: 1. Monster 2. Mushishi 3. Honey and Clover II 4. Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo 5. Gungrave All heavy and dramatic titles. But it's not like I'm completely humourless, my 6th choice was Azumanga Daioh.

1. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
2. Code Geass 3. Requiem for a Phantom 4.Death Note 5. Dragon Ball Z/Kai (DBZ at the time I watched it, kai is obviously way better but its not the same since I already know the story or it would probably be higher). |
