While I have yet to try the other rules, I've barely read about them. I like the Japanese rules with the riichi and dora. These two features allow an element to the game, where y'don't necessarily have to depend on specific hands (yaku). Dora is especially a good fall back, in the event of crap hands. However, I hate the scoring system, because it's way too much to remember. It's not as simplified as the others. The fact that y'gotta take your hand - convert it to not just one (but two numbers, when your hand is cheap) -- then convert that number to a value to exchange accordingly. Then in the end, your point values get converted to a final number. Thank goodness, computerized versions handle all that for you.

i'm back. got bored.
trying to break 2000 rating at 6 dan. recovered from 280 to 900 pts. now at 1992 rating. going through winless streak again. this time i will play much better. i did not time the "winning" cycle correctly last time which resulted into losing too much and making stupid deals without a thought. |

Pretty sure i will get in a losing cycle soon. I only lost twice in the last 50 games and based on my game logs, Tenhou did not even try to pass me a winning tile from other player's tenpai, well..a few games, i narrowly dodged dealing and manage to get the other players to deal out. I could probably stop here until I am up to the task for the challenge hmmm....... LOL at my richii rate. That's what you get for using a free account, lack of quick tenpais and frequent garbage starting hands. The average value is 16% on a premium account. Ok, what the F*** happened in this game!? I disconnected after I riiched. When I came back, it wouldn't let me ron my winning tile!!! And I wasn't in furiten either! WTH? Does tenhou have some stupid rule where if you don't ron the first time around, you can never ron again??
Look at East 3-1. Here's the game: http://tenhou.net/0/?log=2011041316g...-8504ff31&tw=1 I was waiting on the 6-9 sou. I clearly didn't have the tiles in my discard and clearly it's been more than one go-around until they discarded into my hand... Grrr... almost made me get 4th... |

Maybe, there's a special disconnect penalty. I dunno.
EDIT: Ah, the timing on your disconnect sucked. A winning tile (9-sou) was placed while you were away. Yet, two go-arounds passed. So, I'm not sure how long temp. furiten works. For, I thought it'd last only one go-around. But, I am not sure about that.

Hi I've recently gotten into Mahjong, and I know there are a lot of rule variations. But I really like the idea of including Seasons and Flower Tiles as bonus points like in Chinese Mahjong. And I hear there are some Japanese rule variants that also do this.
Anyone know the best way to incorporate Seasons/Flowers into Riichi Mahjong rules? Its for casual play with friends/family if anyones wondering. I'm thinking maybe make each Flower/Season add either 1 han (won't count for 1 yaku minimum) or X fu. Like a Dora thats off to the side. *And with the added caveat that if you have all 8 Seasons/Flowers you automatically win with a Yakuman. What do you guys think? Thanks. |

When you draw a Flower or Season you automatically place it on the side (like with your open melds), and then draw a replacement tile. Depending on the rule variant, some make each Flower/Season tile=a point, some require multiple/specific Flower/Seasons to give a point.
Something along those lines. |

So, essentially, they work just like the North tile in a 3-player variant, where if you pick up a North tile, it can go to the side and count as a dora (or a point).
Seeing how powerful the Dora can really be -- it'd be better of to "require multiple/specific Flower/Seasons to give a point", instead of individually. It is quite easy to attain 2-3 (and more) dora on regular dora tiles alone. So, I can see why these tiles were omitted in the first place.

I think "Dora" replaced Flowers/Seasons in Japanese Mahjong. I wonder why they opted to use Dora instead... Who knows?
More points=fun :P But yeah I can see how having both at same time could allow for super crazy hands... (points are good :3) |

well so much for my run.
at one point i got 7 straight 4th places games. literally getting nothing hands and tenhou kept passing me winning tiles. even though i avoided most of them, they just kept passing them to me until i deal them. bullshit man. 60 points left. ;_; retired 6 dan account. |

Randomized dora tiles creates... well... random. This increases a wider variety of scenarios, where previously "useless" tiles suddenly have value. Particularly within a suit, like say dora 8-pin, you can develop a hand around that, when y'would not have otherwise. Likewise, something like a cheap yakuhai hand can become dangerous. To make things even more random... the ura-dora. The instant effect of revealing that brings about the sudden devastating effect. Y'just won't know what that ura-dora could be... until it's too late. === Oh, and I do own an actual riichi mahjong set. All it has are the flower tiles. No seasons. I guess, the red-dora tiles occupy what would have been the season tiles.

Just when I thought that I was rusty. Went off to a fast start. Played cautiously the rest of the way.
