I loved this episode. It was certainly one of the more serious ones but the action was as epically over-the-top as it's always been. Not to mention there was some nice character development for out present antagonists, Sanageyama especially.
I guess even if it could be argued the only thing really mecha-like about a Kamui was the expelling of steam on occasion, one can't deny the goku uniform's transformation is completely a mecha in every way. T'was damn awesome though.~ And we got to see a brief glimpse of Satsuki's mother, who appears to be a model or entertainer of some sort. I'm assuming she and perhaps Satsuki's father too will play a much larger part later.

This episode proved the four Devas are not to be underestimated. I didn't expect Ryuko to have as much trouble as she did against one of them. She even straight up lost after Sanageyama awakened his shingantsu. It's not just the amount of life fibers in an uniform that matters, but also the abilities of its wearer. It doesn't matter how powerful Senkentsu is if Ryuko can't use his full potential.
Sanageyama is my favorite antagonist so far. He was nicely developed in this episode. The final scene might indicate he isn't blindly devoted to Satsuki anymore. He seems to have become enlightened. His mecha-uniform looked pretty nice. I'm curious to see what the other 3-star uniforms will look like transformed now. Shame we didn't get to see Satsuki's meeting with her mother. I would have liked to see how she behaves around her.

Man, this was one dark episode!
What started off as being hilarious quickly turned into something very melancholic. I really couldn't help but feel sad for Uzu in the second half of this week's episode. Dude went from being arguably the most light hearted of the Elite Four to... well, that. Amazing demonstration of resolve, but you can't help but feel sorry for the guy. Also, the lack of a Mako speech this week really helped accentuate how bleak things were for Ryuuko in the rematch. Then again, even if Mako had been there, what could she have said that would have made any sort of difference? Ryuuko was flat-out screwed in that fight. BTW, I absolutely love how resourceful Ryuuko was this week. It makes things a lot more interesting to see a shonen protagonist actually use their common sense! |

Since we have this thread, I'd might as well pull my discussion from the general thread:
Watching this episode the first time around felt kind of odd. Ryuko's been the center of the show for so long, I was expecting her fight with Sanageyama to last longer and end with a key moment of triumph. Instead we get an episode where Sanageyama is more or less the protagonist, and Ryuko's victory seems almost even less of an accomplishment than defeating the first two club presidents. Ryuko is definitely not your conventional protagonist. If you think of this show from Satsuki and the Elite Four's perspective, she's practically the villain: she rudely barges in and messes up the order that the "heroes" must maintain (that order being an oppressive fascist regime, but still); she wears dark and edgy clothes to contrast the academy's pristine and light uniforms; and when she loses, she makes a crafty getaway and pretty much cries, "We'll meet again, Satsuki Kiryuin!" (in fact, she does say that). Nowhere is this more apparent than in this episode, and herbert from the other thread put it best: I've kinda had this "Ryuko is a villain" idea since around episode 2 or 3 when I first heard a discussion on it. But still, this episode's role-swap was so unrelentless that it took me a second viewing to really appreciate it. And I do appreciate it, because now we get an even more dangerous opponent who Ryuko will get to try and overcome. If overcoming him is a good thing, that is...

Sanageyama getting a full mahou shoujo transformation sequence, complete with fanservice shots, may be the most awesome sequence in the series.
Though the way he yanked off his uniform has me wondering if he might join Nudist Beach before the end. |

The nipples... glowed. I'm not sure if that was nuttier than Sensei's deep intonations of "Nuuudist Beeeeach."
The series hasn't entirely deviated from the villain of the week, but this episode makes me think that they'll be making a bigger format change fairly soon (and we're a quarter of the way in now). Like immblueversion said, the events here (and in the past) were more like Ryuko as the villain and Sanageyama as the hero. And the Sanageyama/Satsuki plot, though just introduced, didn't diminish at all... even if Satsuki gave him a second chance, it doesn't seem that his core ambition has gone away. This also felt like the limits of how far Ryuko can succeed on sheer force of will alone... she either has to upgrade her combat abilities or start fighting smarter. |

That homeroom teacher is really something..
Some more info about Satsuki was interesting. Looks like that girl is no pushover. Matoi is gonna have to practice hard to take her out. Sanageyama vs Matoi was fun to watch. She's strong enough to take on 3 star uniforms at least. Damn, it was surprising to see Sanageyama get new resolve. That was a close one...

Sanageyama went to being a overconfident guy to a really badass guy.
the sensei was hilarious while saying "Nudist Beach" I guess Ryuuko lost the rematch, because Mako wasn't there to give her supported
