The so-called water dragons were a type of water spirit. Though they were a subtype of dragon, they were treated as being in the dragon family.

Question for JP readers, is the sentence in the original the same as this one here? Lygo apparently had a bit of trouble trying to convey this.

If she were, I think Takiko would certainly know about it, especially given the differences in ages. Unless her mother either had affair or was divorced and Akino was born some time down line. It's much more likely for Akino to be her cousin from a branch family.

Well I hope Akino is Takiko's cousin or better a distant relative.
In fact it was mentioned that Takiko is the last direct descendand of Souma Family so Akino must be a branch family member.

This is all my speculation but I think Akino's situation was like Hishamaru's but Hishamaru was talented... Maybe Akino is also talented but like nobody seems to care about her, she hasn't had proper training or she could be the hardworking type because she has no talent.

The only reason Hishamaru didn't end up like Akino was because Yakou took her in as his shikigami. Dammit. It just had to end at the good part.

I don't think that's why she in the temple, if anything it probably has more to do with her being a living spirit. Furthermore if we view and infer various situations and reactions that have happened around Hishamaru and Touji then people whether they be Onmyouji or normal folk fear, revile and ostracized them in general.

For example Hishamaru from brief flashbacks we see had been locked in some underground place by her fellow clansman since birth, treated with hostility and shame and not even given a name. She was only brought up be a tool and nothing more because of her powers. When it was reveal that Touji was also one in vol 3, Tenma had suppress a kneejerk reaction and fear before he could hand him the Shakjou and talk to him (Touji himself didn't expect Tenma to do that, which speak for itself) again. Even Akino stated from her various experiences people have often looked at her like a rare animal you would see in a zoo. So her abandonment as child also a probably has some link to it.

Basically because of dangers of them turning into spiritual disasters society views them as walking time-bombs in some cases like Hishamaru sub-human. For that, they're cursed in eyes of most.

Hishamaru probably wasn't raised there, but maybe she spent sometime there after Yakou's death and before Harutora's birth.

Dairenji Shidou's original last name was Souma, and seeing as how Takiko is supposed to be the last living member of the main Souma house, I think we can take it that he was a branch family member.

Yes, that is correct. We really don't know anything about the Dairenji house at moment though.
