Kyubey's gender is actually unknown, so he qualified. Same goes to Tippy. The horses must have females in them, so they qualified. It's hilarious to think that there are even 3 troll characters this time.
Funny thing is, in 2011 the troll character in the tournament was Charlotte, now Charlotte reappears in AST as Momoe Nagisa.

Here are image overviews of first prelim. Y groups, first prelim. E groups, and second prelim. (S). Hope you like it.
The image formatting was very much inspired by (but is a bit different from) the overview images at animesaimoe.org, one of the things I love about that site (unfortunately the site has appeared to quit all activity as of now). Oh, and thanks Aya Reiko for suggesting imageshack as a suitable site for large-scale images (which I had not used for like 10 years); it even comes with a "quantizer setting" for JPEG directly in the URL. By the way, if there are any errors in the images above, please tell me. Regarding Tippy and Kyuubey and horses, I think it's funny that they are in the Saimoe main tournament and I look forward to voting for them. I gave the translation "Investigation team's horses" in my documents, but don't take that too seriously since it was a throwaway translation for an entity which I believed at the time to be completely irrelevant. That being said, I wonder why Saimoe allows obviously non-humanoid characters to enter. As for "gender unknown", I think the rules say that the character must demonstrate "female characteristics". I don't quite understand the legalism behind their qualification rules regarding gender, but I don't wish to overanalyze it; I think that would be too pedantic. ^ Kyubey has a female seiyuu, does that count as "female characteristics"?
"Tippy is female, except on the inside." And like I said, there might be female horses among the horses, so that counts as "female characteristics"

Well with ''Lucy abbrev.'' qualified we now have a new record holder for the longest name in the tournament's history and new Louise De La Valliere medallist for 2014 (for the longest in the current tournament).

So why do you call him "he" and not "it" or "s/he"?
The Madoka Magica fandom, from what I've seen, consistently refers to Kyubey as "he" and most seem to think of him as male, rather than as female or totally without sex/gender. Having a "troll" entry in J-SaiMoe, with Kyubey's level of popularity, is a bit risky if you ask me. Having him in the tournament also seems like an odd choice if J-SaiMoe's organizers are seriously concerned about too much series domination (which they seem to be concerned with, given some of the new rule changes).

I made a list of seiyuu and which characters they voice since I haven't seen it anywhere else this year.
KanaHana has more characters than ever this year (14 characters). In previous tournaments, she never had more than 9. It's not a record because Kugimiya Rie had 16 in 2009 and Kawasumi Ayako had 19 in 2002, but it's still a lot. Spoiler for Seiyuu by number of qualified characters:

Let's see.....
(A-1) Pick preference: Shizuku (Sakura Trick) > Kana Minami (Minami-Ke) (B-1) Pick Preference: Kataoka Yuuki (Saki) > Nymph (Sora no Otoshimono) (C-1) Picking: Maho Misawa (Ro-Kyu-Bu) (D-1) Pick Preference: Yuigahama > Honoka > Kon (all good choices) I'll give the tournament a day or two to see what happens before going with any actual predictions. |

My picks today:
A1-1: No preference, whoever wins is fine. B1-1: Aislinn Wishart @ Saki Zenkoku-hen It was hard for me to decide between Tacos and Aislinn so why not give a chance to the most recent character. C1-1: RYUUGUU Rena @ Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak For nostalgia reasons. D1-1: KOUSAKA Honoka @ Love Live! While not my most favorite LL! girl, I still liked Honoka a lot mainly due to her personality. |
