Poor Izumi. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time(Nice save though!). Though I'm sure that Hayate will get tons of flack because of that video and said reaction.

It was all a matter of timing, something that almost everyone in this series lacks. Hayate was totally stressing over the fact that someone had just confessed to him in THE MOST CLEAR AND NO ROOM FOR OTHER INTERPRETATION way, since he is used to more subtle hints that can easily/stupidly shrugged off, that he doesn't know what to do. And when Izumi confessed his thoughts were probably "WTF NOT HER TOO TT.TT"

What would happen if Hayate told Ayumu about his story of getting help from Aika led to Konoha's kiss?
Clearing the kiss misunderstanding with his problem of his popularity with females.

Nagi truly might abandon him if she becomes aware of his situation.
Aika, she might not last long with her boyfriend.

Hayate will receive the finishing blow once that YouTube video rises on top.

Only once Hata decided to take her out of the spotlight. In the past, she was capable _and_ smart. But for several months now, she has been relegated to comedic relief.

My suspicion is that Hata was annoyed about her _still_ being the big fan favorite, and this is his attempt to change that.

I'd believe that to be the case. Add to that Athena becoming A-tan in an attempt to lower her popularity as well, and the way he had the OVAs/anime go, it's clear he's doing everything he can to try and make people like Nagi.

Alternate explanation: HnG is about people with ridiculous flaws and the gags they generate. People who are too capable, too perfect don't really have a place in it.

As has been said many times, Nagi is not unpopular in Japan. She moves more merchandise then any other character besides Hina.

The dream scenario of Hina riding a wave of popularity to become the replacement heroine and win it all was never going to happen which is why the conspiracy theories make no sense at all.

Considering there's really only merchandise for Hina and Nagi, it isn't really difficult to be #2. Every now and then there may be a phone strap for tertiary characters like Maria, Hayate, and Ruri (who the hell is this?), but the overwhelming amount of both merchandise and popularity votes are for Hina.
