I'm still not sold on this adaptation. The animation feels cheap and doesn't really capture the visual humor of the manga, IMO. The direction feels hamfisted. Still, the source material is strong enough that the humor comes through, but I feel like it could have been better. I do like the voice acting, and disagree with the criticisms of Yuu Serizawa as Youko.

That's... a hatch? Geeze... I had my theory for the class rep, but I certainly didn't guess that she was actually a tiny alien piloting a robot body.
...Given that she doesn't sound anything like that, (no, seriously, absolutely NOTHING like that) I have no idea where that criticism is coming from.

The difference to what I described, is that she doesn't have said character traits which is why it may appear different. The voice tone the director set is exactly this though. anyway lets agree to disagree there. Seriously though, the tone the VA director set there is something I'd have rather expected from another character.

Ep 02
Yes indeed ... another good episode. As mentioned before, though, I am one of those who read the manga source and for whom the "wild", exaggerated art style kinda consistently interfered with my enjoying the story itself. So for me the adaptation is a plus ... the visuals and ... well ... most everything about it is less prone to yank me out of the narrative. Which is good, because the story is an enjoyable silly, romp and comedy. ^^ Of course not everyone is of the same mind and opinion - no surprise there.

To me, the anime version seems just a little toned-down from the manga and if it keeps this kind of adaptation through the [-REDACTED-] arc then I will probably prefer the anime to the manga. The voice acting seems consistent with what I imagined so no real problems for me. Also, I kind of like the softer visuals of the anime over that of the manga. So far, so good for me and I hope it continues.

Excellent. Total fun. Deeper and deeper realms of amusing stupidity. And Minase Inori is showing herself to be a real seiyuu. Nagisa, Hestia, Noelle in Sora no Method, Chino in Usagi desu ka, Suzu in Love Lab -- lots of variety. And she's really creating a character with Nagisa. Works for me.
Minase is good. I love what Serizawa Yuu is doing with Youko. Hanae Natsuki is believable and likable. And the little bit we heard of Ueda Reina as Mikan was good, too. Good comedy, good-looking character design and coloration, and good voices. Sold.

I'm also really looking forward to Mao Ichimichi's performance as Akane. I think she's a perfect fit for that role.

I just watched this. Did not intend to watch it originally as I found the humor in the manga mediocre and already dropped around v6 or 7. In gag manga, art ability and style is less important though I'm not that fond of the manga style (and no, I'm not referring to the exaggerated faces but the base style) but not to the point of getting turned off, so I definitely find the anime chara design more appealing.

For the record, she's speaking in Kansai dialect, and that's how it sounds. Aside from the vocab and grammar differences, Kansai dialect has a completely different emphasis and accent from standard Japanese. It has a 'musical' nature to some (including myself) and I absolutely love hearing it. Go search "Osaka from Azumanga Diaoh", they speak at completely different speeds and energy levels , but the undulation in tone and accent are pretty similar. But if you are referring to the timbre of the VA's voice, then it might be on the high side, but it doesn't really get on my nerves per se. |

The people complaining about Youko's voice seems a bit like nitpicking to me. Irritability of the voice is quite subjective. I think it's something to get used to eventually. As for me, this series is the one I'm looking forward to most. It has a charm of character chemistries like no other. The humour may be on the low key but it only gets better.
And I love Kansai accent in the first place why I read the manga hoping it will be adapted to anime one day. Shame I can't find too many anime with characters who speak with Kansai Ben,

There are other reasons too why the voice tone doesn't fit but I think that goes a bit into the spoiler territorry. For now lets just say it doesn't fit her character theme

I mean, I'll be honest, I imagined Youko having a more masculine voice, like Mikako Komatsu as Tsugumi in Nisekoi or Mao Ichimichi as Youko in Kiniro Mosaic.
But with that being said, I think Yuu Serizawa is doing a very solid job with this role. I can't really complain.

I always imagined Youko with the voice, similar to Ami Koshimizu's performance as Tenma in School Rumble and, well, it IS kinda similar here, so I don't have any problem.
In fact, I can't imagine her having mature voice (why would she have it? She is far from being mature). Last edited by AntonKutovoi; 2015-07-14 at 12:27. |
