That's patently false
I.S. sell really well and went to the top rank in light novel sales back when it's still fresh and new thing. The season 1 anime sell over 12.000 disc for DVD alone which is patently bullshit for a harem anime, and then you add several thousand BD pack on top of that. (Only Monogatari series surpassed it) Then Izuru went full retard, and 8bit add even more retardation, which result in Volume 5/season 2 onward and no one giving a fuck anymore.

I think the start was all the same. Bright eyed otaku lured in by the advertising of pretty girls in mecha. "Oh this is gonna be good.", "Oh it'll be epic with parts of cuteness.", "The mecha will be awesome good.", "The girls are going to be so endearing."
Cue season one. More cynical anime fans are now dead-eyed leaving with sighs of disappointment stuck in their chests because it's so bad they don't want to spare that much breath on it. Season 2 rolls in and even some die hard fans throw down their plastic "IS #1" fingers and just give up. Then we have those guys who live off the thing purely by the multiple pairs of plots running around the series. Flat or large.

It's very difficult for LN to be axed, especially if you're Editor's bitch. LN market is low risk high profit business.
Japanese publisher regularly shat out obscure LN titles that sell 500 copies at best and still remain profitable.

Honestly with the exception of vol 10 I can't expect Izuru to make the plot serious without repeating the "Bad guys with OP ISes interrupt the ISA's tournament and kick Ichika's arse" thing.
Only times it had nothing to do with the academy, or more accurately, it happened outside the academy, were the Gospel arc and Kyoto arc. He tried it again with the Cannonball Fast arc when it happened in the city but kept the "interrupted tournament" thing
