I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King yet.

I got it a few weeks ago and it's fantastic. The music is good, cel-shading graphics look wonderful and the story... well, it's the usual Good vs. Bad so no much surprises there, but DQ does it rather well. ^^

Oh, and character designs are by Akira Toriyama (DBZ.)

"Rhapsody, a musical adventure" - PS1
Quite unknown, but very good localized.
If you like cute and easy journey, with loveable characters and several songs, it's a game you must try.
The first RPG for girls ! ^^

All grandia, especially the first ! ^0^

Final fantasy and Of Mana series.

Parasite Eve 2 is excellent.

Clock Tower, Project Zero and Silent Hill series.

Tales of symphonia!!!!! I loved it, Good story, RPG.
um... The Dot hack series is pretty good. There is 4 of them and they all follow each other so start with the first. each one comes with an episode of .hack//liminality... not great but a nice touch to sweeten the deal. Plus it's cheap.

Another SRPG to consider would be Disgaea (1/2), as well as the other Nippon Ichi labeled games. Do rest assured that the game is actually better than the anime series that aired this Spring. Time varies anywhere from double-figures to triple, if you're into that sort of "let's spend an ungodly amount of time making everything ridiculous" thing.

I only played galerians on ps1 and i can say i truely enjoyed it. Its story and cg is made in japan and you can truely see it. Cg reminds me of anime somehow and the story is just awesome and animelike.
Gameplay is similar with horrorgames like resident evil (fixed camera angle, rooms and keys and quests and books compicated mechanisms and agents and monster and boss monster)
The story: Rion wakes up in an hospital. He is fixed to somechair while machines are inserting drugs into him. He breaks free and realizes he got telekinetic pwers (fire and shockwaves which are your ingame attack, +later gravaty ability). He cant remember anything of his past, but he hears the voice of a girl in his head. Slowly he regains his memories, small pictures of his past while he goes trough the various maps and lvls and looks at all mementos from his past. So he got to break free from the hospital, visits his house to see his parents are gone. Or do they even still live? what was the reseach were working on? why did he wake up in the hospital? who is this voice? Who are the galerians? Is it really because of the drugs that he can use telekinetis?
More questions and asweres come with this awesome game and this awesome story.

Suikoden always felt like pokemon back in the day O_O but the Princec never talks! Maybe its a good thing since he will probly sound annoying if they added a voice for him >.>

So far there are 3 games out for the PS2 of Negima and at least 3 of Love Hina. 2 Inuyasha for the PS1 and 2 for the PS2.
