Why am I always late to know these things?
FUDGE YEAH!!! I love the OVA and love the manga...so glad this gets an anime and 24 ep too! (although I wish it will be longer but beggars can't be choosers, I guess). The overall atmosphere/concept of this series reminds me of Ghibli Studio's work (ah, Ghibi...*cries*)

Are the OVAs a direct prequel or something closer to a spin-off? I'm debating whether to watch them. I've never read the manga and I don't want to get spoiled on the main series, and prequels can sometimes casually reveal important things.

They're a sort of prequel, taking place when she's a little girl. However, it does flash forward to the future in the beginning to tell the story, so Elias (the skull-head dude) and Ruth (the dog) appear. Other than that, you can watch without any really big spoilers being told and its freaking beautiful.
Basically, a canon-prequel side-story.

I do think the writing is an order of magnitude sharper in the series proper (and the first two eps reflect that), but yes - the OVAs are some of the most beautiful art and animation I've seen.

Dangnabbit ... that preview made me interested more!
Interesting too to see the footage they arranged and the way they arranged it, yes, but also how they chose to adapt those scenes proper ... definitely got me thinking and wondering....

Got shivers during the a capella part of the opening, didn't recognize JUNNA as Mikumo voice right away but man, she is great. Also that art and animation, WIT Studio going all out as expected (though Attack on Titan S2 was below average for them).
