The more I watch this trailer, the more it feels like it's aiming at a younger, teenage audience rather than young adults and adults proper like the previous movie did.

Anyway, I expect Guillermo's touch to make way for more explosions and CG action. I have nothing against Boyega, but as a gung-ho teen he seems a poor replacement for either Idris Elba and his natural gravitas or Charlie Hunnam.

Well, most of the mecha anime genre that the movie paid homage to is targeted for younguns (even children, if you count ye olde "super robot fighting giant monsters"-shows) with teenagers as pilots, especially post Gunbuster & Evangelion.

I have no problem with the show's intended audience as long as the narrative is good and has no more cringey dialogues like in the first one. Also, I like that they retained one of the most fun part of the original characters: the off-the-wall scientists .

One thing that obviously missing though is Guillermo's style and art in building a set and framing-executing a shot. It's like Uprising has no personality of its own aside from walking in in its predecessor's footsteps. At least as far as the trailer is concerned. Heck, I think Kong: Skull Island has more style and personality. But of course I'll be happy to be proven wrong when the movie premier on my local cinema.

To be fair, Pacific Rim was also seemingly aiming for the younger audiences since most of its trailers were action shots. It wasn't until the film came out that we had nicely done introspective/drama/conversations scenes that proves that the movies is more than that.

My biggest concern is that hopefully, the other Jaegers get more than one chance to shine instead of getting ganked early on.

Also, Stacker Pentecost is a goddamn legend. Kinda hard to tops - or even come close - to that.

Just watched it. It was alright, having adjusted my expectations based on the trailers.

Spoiler for heavy spoilers for the movie:

Gipsy Avenger's two fights against Obsidian Fury carried the weight of the action well enough in the first half of the movie but the second half doesn't really deliver. Basically there was only one Kaijuu fight, since the attack of the drone/kaijuu hybrids was not stopped by any Jaeger. The trio of Kaijuu were pretty generic, which doesn't matter much since they tangled with the Jaegers for awhile with nothing significant happening before they merged into 'Mega Kaijuu', per the actual name shown on screen. The Jaeger team doesn't fare much better with only two or three flashy scenes for each Jaeger before the climax starts.

I don't feel as if enough was done to make the new cast appealing. The cadets only have meager minutes combined on them before they have to fight in the final showdown so no one really stands out enough to make me care for them. Amara's story and role was alright imo, being the resident Jaeger fanboy and techie who gets a chance to live her dream as a pilot.

I could go on but I reckon this is enough for spoilers. There is one key development which I felt heavily disappointed but it's quite important so I'll stop here. Worth watching if you enjoyed the first movie but it's nothing spectacular.

For me, the movie is... well, while not great like the first one was (to me, again), it does hold up on its own quite well.

Spoiler for The good:

The twist of WHO was behind the Jaeger Kaiju hybrid was hinted and showed rather well, I think. I mean, it isn't until I see the Kaijuu brain in Newt's appartment that the realisation that one of our beloved scientist from the first film is actually beiing brainwashed/mind controlled.

Out of all the Jaegers, while I like Saber Athena and Guardian Bravo, I have to say that I just LOVE Scrapper. A mini Jaeger capable of transforming? Hell yes do I want one. The Jaeger - Kaijuu hybrids were quite terrifying to be honest, and their plans even more so

All the Jaegers and cadet got some good showings and actually forced the 3 Kaijuus back, while actually portraying what they are supposed to be.

Also, Shao actually does kinda grow on me. I get the impression from her that this isn't just a money grubbing op, but rather she actually wants to help protect Earth and thus when push comes to shove, doesn't hesitate to gather as many of Shao Corp ressources as possible and get them to the last Shatterdome... or jury rigging a remote controlled system onto Scrapper. (The fact that she looks way more attractive in T-Shirt and pants probably helped )

Spoiler for The bad:

The first thing I have to say is their treatments of the characters from the previous film. Gottlieb being kinder and becoming the commander when shit goes down? Great.

Newt becoming the villain? Possible, giving how Drift works.

Herc and Rayleigh not being mentionned at all, when the latter is the one pulling the pin the first time? Heck no.

Mako dying to chopper explosion just so that our new protag actually have more reasons to stay in PPDC? Fuck. No.

The second is the Jaegers. Don't get me wrong, they're great to look at, but compared to the first they just don't measure up. I mean, in the first film, I could immediately tell what the Jaegers are supposed to be - Gypsy as the all rounder, Cherno as the goddamn tank, Typhoon is the speedster and Striker as the ace. But this time? They're all rather similar in build and it isn't until they step into battle that I actually see what they're supposed to be.

The third is the Precursor plan. While from a stand alone point of view, it sorta makes sense, but it doesn't match up with some of the attacks from the first film. (Like why go to Sydney from the Breach? Or Anchorage?)

I'm actually surprised how much I liked it, despite almost put off by all the negativity I almost didn't watch it.

The one person stanning for this movie was Huber from EZA and I'm glad I took his advise above others like Mother's Basement.

I'm surprised that the four most talked about negatives in this movie I actually didn't have a problem with- I wasn't bummed out by [character] death, I wasn't negatively affected by the teenagers, I didn't mind [character] heel, and I actually like the fight scenes better in this one.
