There's supposedly a reason for why the weapons clash when it comes to exp later in the novels and webnovel, but that's major spoiler territory and you'd need someone keeping up with the releases to confirm it. I'm actually impressed with the anime's rendition of the battles themselves compared to the Manga.

A blatantly open assassination attempt to mask a more subtle one? A grieving big sister who swears to get vengeance for her precious little sister, cruelly slain in the confusion by the evil shield hero.
I could see an overly convoluted scheme being spun like that.

Considering they brought that crystal ball to record what happened, I think Malty was planning on Naofumi being a "good guy" and saving Melty from the assassination so she could spin it as him kidnapping the princess and kill two birds with one stone.
